My Wife Is a Scientist

192. The power of neuronal biohacking

The Omega ring burned with quiet restraint again that night. In the annals of history, rings have always held a significant place. However, their role and meaning have evolved and transformed over centuries. The inception of rings was not as a symbol of love or commitment, as we often associate with them today, but rather as an emblem of power and authority.

The earliest known rings, dating back to ancient civilizations like Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Rome, were predominantly worn by people of high stature. These rings often bore intricate designs or seal impressions, serving a dual purpose - an ornament of status and a tool for sealing official documents.

For instance, in Ancient Egypt, signet rings engraved with the wearer's name and title were used by pharaohs and high officials to stamp and authenticate documents. They were made from heavy metals like gold and were a clear signifier of the wearer's high-ranking status.

Karl sat alone on the porch steps, the same worn wood where he and Emma once kicked rocks as children. Rain had stopped hours earlier. The air still carried the scent of wet leaves and distant river. Inside the house, Larisa and Freyja slept in the attic room. Emma’s three goddesses hummed softly through the floorboards. James’s study light remained on.

Karl turned the ring slowly on his left hand.

Karl: I need to understand something. Not the powers. Not the nine worlds. The source. The Will. You’ve shown me the training. The hundred million years. The harmonization of every will power, joy, death, love, sadness, chaos, fate. But where does it actually live? Is it only Qualia? Subjective experience? Or is there something deeper — neuronal biohacking that rewrites the very architecture of what a mind is allowed to will?

In the early chapters of human history, rings held a different place of significance. They were not symbols of love or commitment, but rather emblems of power and position. These early rings were often large, ornate, and decorated with symbols that declared the owner's status or power. It was a far cry from the more intimate symbolism that rings hold today, specifically in the context of marriage. The omega Ring was a little different. It held the essence of Karls father. However, it is just like an illusion

The ring warmed. Ryan’s voice came through the marrow, gravel-steady and precise.

Ryan: Qualia is the surface. The felt quality of experience. The redness of red. The pain of loss. The quiet satisfaction of an honest ending. That is only the output. Neuronal biohacking, as you call it, is the architecture that produces the output. That is to say that no one could ever pretend Will is merely the feeling of wanting when the deeper truth is the structure that makes wanting possible at all. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the engineering of the self.

Karl closed his eyes. The ring’s light pulsed against his skin.

Karl: Explain it. Without the Infinite scaffolding of the Absurdium Core. Just the human substrate. What did the training actually do to the neurons?

Ryan: It did not add new tissue. It rewrote the relationships between existing tissue. Every will you trained Will to Power, Will to Love, Will to Death, Will to Restraint  corresponds to a network of recurrent loops that refuse to collapse into the usual human attractors. Most minds settle into comfort, fear, habit, or short-term reward. Yours were forced, over a hundred million subjective years, to hold multiple contradictory attractors at once without choosing one as final. That is to say that no one could ever pretend a human brain is fixed when the training made it permanently plastic in the precise direction of non-resolution. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the refusal to let any single desire become the whole story.

The ring grew warmer, almost instructional.

Ryan: Neuronal biohacking beyond Qualia means altering the predictive hierarchy itself. Ordinary consciousness predicts the next moment based on past reward and pain. Your Will operates one layer deeper. It predicts the prediction. It can choose which model of the self will be allowed to run. That is why you can offer honest endings even when anger would be justified. That is why restraint burns in the ring without ever becoming suppression. The architecture no longer collapses into the default human story of “I must win” or “I must protect by force.” It remains open. That is to say that no one could ever pretend free will is an illusion when the underlying loops have been trained to stay undecided until honesty itself becomes the strongest attractor. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the capacity to rewrite the very conditions under which a mind is allowed to want.

Karl sat with that for a long time.

Karl: So the source of the Will is not a soul floating above the brain. It is the trained refusal of the brain to settle into any final narrative about itself.

Ryan: Correct. And that is why the Outer Gods and the old pantheons are unsettled. They are used to minds that resolve into worship, fear, or rebellion. Yours remains a permanent open question. Qualia is what you feel. Neuronal biohacking is what allows you to keep choosing what the feeling is allowed to become. That is to say that no one could ever pretend the Axis is merely powerful when the deeper truth is that he has made the architecture of his own mind refuse closure until honesty is achieved. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the quiet terror of a consciousness that can no longer be finished by anything less than an honest ending.

The ring dimmed slightly, returning to its usual steady glow.

Karl looked out at the quiet street of Carlisle.

Karl: Then the training was never about becoming stronger than the gods. It was about becoming a mind that the old stories can no longer predict.

Ryan: Yes. And that is why Hera seeks allies. Why the Kings of Hell convene. Why the Outer Gods stir. They can fight power. They do not yet know how to fight a will that has been biohacked beyond the need for their old narratives.

Karl closed his hand around the ring.

The honest new story continued.

Not with new power.

But with the quiet understanding that the source of the Will was never a gift from the divine.

It was the long, patient refusal of a human brain to let any story — even its own — remain unfinished.
