Chapter 228

George advanced again, golden light pulsing from his armor as he layered another buff. His movements became even sharper; his strength heightened further.

He used his shield to control the space, bashing through underbrush and forcing Jack to keep moving. When Jack tried to close in for another combo, George met him with a shield bash that drove him back, followed by a quick sword thrust that forced Jack to twist away.

The forest bore the marks of their battle. Trees scarred with sword cuts and dagger marks. The ground was torn where shield and blade had struck.

Patches of moonlight shifted as the wind moved through the branches, constantly changing which areas offered deep shadow and were exposed.

Jack tried to use the environment more aggressively, since his experience and the environment were the only edge he had against an enemy so strong.

He slipped between two thick trunks, using the shadow to mask his movements, then appeared from behind a tree with another rapid dual-wield fury.

The daggers struck true as always, as he never missed from the beginning. Critical hits landed as Jack targeted the joints in George’s armor.

While George still had a magic shield activated aside from his physical shield, Jack’s damage was concentrated and accumulated.

But where one would expect their opponent to back off, George turned with the assault, his sword sweeping in a wide arc that forced Jack to retreat.

“Tch…” An almost inaudible, desperate sound came from Jack. He was getting frustrated, even if his face was hidden behind the dark helmet of the armor.

He had expected George to step back as most people instinctively do, but who could have expected that George would push through the pain and counterattack?

As Jack went in for another attack, George met with the same intensity, accumulating enough pain to make one scream in agony, yet still not even flinching. Even if his wounds were being constantly healed, one wouldn’t be so used to pain unless they had been subjected to a pain so immense that their pain receptors were affected.

Among the numerous exchanges that followed, George displayed his unbelievable tenacity and massive reserves of divinity that no one in the world could have expected.

While he wasn’t a lot stronger than Jack, he was well-balanced just like him. A strong defense and a strong offense. Not to mention the willpower to endure the hellish pain of his joints being stabbed again and again, yet not even flinching, let alone faltering.

George only pushed through, looking for just one attack that would end this battle, and that came soon after when Jack’s movements dulled a little more, his shadow jumps grew less frequent, and his desperation began to seep out through his attacks.

A wide arc. An attack that forced Jack to retreat once again, but he wasn’t as quick as many times before. The blade caught Jack across the side in a glancing blow, the holy-infused edge cutting through the armor’s protection enough to draw blood.

Jack staggered, breathing harder now. The constant movement and fighting were draining him. George didn’t give him room to recover. He pressed forward, shield raised, using his buffs to maintain pressure.

He pressed forward, numerous spells activated at the same time as he forced Jack back through the trees. “You can’t keep this up. Even an idiot can tell your tricks are running out.”

Jack used shadow jump when he saw the opportunity to appear at George’s side and landed another quick series of strikes.

But it was no different from earlier attacks. No, it was worse. Jack was slower this time. Not by much, but enough to make a difference.

George didn’t miss the opportunity and pulled Jack in using his divinity, which Jack resisted successfully, but it ended up halting him for a second. A second was all George needed.

A strong impact came from George’s bash that sent Jack tumbling across the woods into a clearing, making the stealth effect of his armor and the use of his shadows useless.

George’s sword came down in a powerful strike from where he stood, sending a flash of light.

Jack dodged by spinning around, but the blow caught him across the back of his leg as he spun, cutting deep.

He went down on one knee with a grunt, the wound burning for some reason.

George didn’t hesitate. He followed with a stance that allowed him to jump forward with his shield at the front, bashing Jack fully into the ground.

The golden armor loomed over Jack as George raised his sword for a finishing blow.

He wanted to end it quickly. For some reason, he had this nagging feeling at the back of his head.

‘Why is he fighting like this…?’

For some reason, Jack was fighting as if buying time. Time for what? For reinforcements? No. It didn’t make sense. No one was coming to save him. Then it was a last struggle. But what was it? No matter how much George put his mind to it, he couldn’t come up with an answer.

In his haste, George overlooked the point that Jack had used several movement techniques, and not all required shadow.

Jack used a movement spell to move, appearing several paces away near the base of a thick tree. He was breathing hard, blood running down his leg.

The daggers were still in his hands, but his movements were slower now, the agility boost strained by the fatigue and injury.

George advanced again, worried that Jack would use the shadows to his advantage again, bringing golden light in droves from his armor.

George raised his sword again, eyes locked on Jack, “It’s over.”

Jack pushed himself up, using the tree for support. He threw one dagger in a desperate arc, but George raised his shield and blocked it easily.

The blade returned to Jack’s hand, but the effort cost him. George closed the distance in two powerful strides, shield leading.

He slammed it into Jack’s chest, driving him back against the tree trunk. The impact knocked the wind from Jack again.

Jack tried to bring the daggers up for another combo, but George was faster now. His sword came around in a heavy strike that caught Jack across the side, the blade cutting through the armor’s protection and drawing fresh blood.

Jack staggered, barely staying upright. George followed with another shield bash that sent him crashing to the ground.

Jack rolled onto his back, breathing hard, blood soaking into the forest floor.

The daggers were still gripped in his hands, but his arms felt heavy.

George stood over him, golden armor gleaming in the moonlight, sword raised for the final strike. The holy light around him was steady and bright, pushing back the surrounding shadows.

George looked down at him, breathing heavily but still standing tall, “You’ve fought well for a shadow. But eventually, the light always prevails.”

Jack stared up at him, chest heaving, the twin daggers still clutched tightly as his strength faded.

The surrounding forest was quiet now, the only sounds their breathing and the faint rustle of leaves in the wind. George’s armor caught the moonlight, making him look larger as he prepared to bring down the sword.

Jack’s grip tightened on the daggers one last time, but his body refused to move. Time slowed down, and the night forest watched in silence as George stood over him, the blade poised to end the fight.

But…

“Haha.” A chuckle came from Jack.

Was it an end struggle? George didn’t care. He was going to end it immediately. Because Jack was dangerous. Everything in him was screaming that.

“Three drops were enough to kill a person, yet I gave you four. What the hell are you even made of?”

George didn’t understand. He didn’t even want to. He just wanted to end it right now. But no matter how hard he tried, his sword just wouldn’t come down.

“You… what did… you do…?”

George felt something running down his nose. His body was not moving.

“Just a little something in your wine,” Jack said, strength returning to his voice.

His wounds began to heal, although not at the same pace as George’s healing. But it was still enough for him to stand.

“But, it seems like even that wasn’t enough.”

Jack muttered as he witnessed the shield spell still strong around George, him being healed at a very fast pace, even when a potent poison enough to kill two people of the same strength was coursing through his veins.

Anyone in Jack’s position would have slit George’s throat, but he knew it was useless. George wasn’t an opponent Jack could kill in his current state.

What he needed to do was…

“I need to get in the range.”

Using every ounce of power left in him, Jack used every movement spell he had in his arsenal to launch himself in a certain direction.

Not attacking George was a wise decision because…

“GET BACK HERE!!!”
