Chapter 971: [971] : Pathetic

"You two are pathetic," I began, my gaze settling on the butler. "Especially you. You really think I can't see right through you?"

"And let me tell you something else—don't bother with the sob story. I'm not buying it."

"You two have no connection to me whatsoever. I've got to hand it to you—using me as your tool? You've got some nerve."

"You're both incredibly bold. But I can't entirely blame you," I said, turning to Lucy. "I suppose your father never taught you what men are really like."

"You've barely seen the world. You have no idea what kind of games they play."

Lucy, however, looked utterly bewildered, unable to grasp what I was saying. She spoke slowly, her voice trembling.

"I know you hate my butler, but he's all I have now. He's taken care of me since I was a child. I know you could kill us easily."

"And you could just as easily hand me over to my father. But please, I'm begging you, don't do that. If you do, I might as well be dead."

"I really don't want to go back. I don't want to live that kind of life anymore."

And just like that, I understood the whole story.

Lucy was a spoiled little princess, raised without a mother. Her father, the king, must have doted on her, micromanaging every aspect of her life until she couldn't stand it anymore.

And this knight? He was no saint. He saw a naive, easily manipulated princess and spent his days coddling her, all for the sake of his own grand scheme.

'He probably asked the king for her hand, and the king, of course, refused. So he came up with a new plan—tell her the king was marrying her off to someone else.'

'At that point, Lucy must have panicked.'

Once she panicked, she would have listened to her knight's advice and run away. The knight, whose real ambition was the throne, knew the king would never approve of him.

So he devised a plan to sell the princess to another kingdom. Because Lucy's mother was an elf, she possessed immense magical power.

Anyone who slept with her would gain a massive surge of magic—a well-known fact in this world of Fairy Tail.

The knight craved power above all else and was willing to sell the princess to get it. Of course, he'd sell her to a foreign nation, ensuring no one would ever find out.

And so, he orchestrated this entire drama.

I let out a small laugh and said, "So, you want my help. I get it now."

"If you had been straight with me from the beginning, I definitely wouldn't have helped you. In fact, we never would have crossed paths."

Hearing my words, Lucy's face brightened with relief.

Did that mean I had agreed to help?

But my expression hardened as I continued, "But now that you've both tried to deceive me, I have no intention of helping you. Instead, you'll both be staying here."

"One of you is going to the underworld. And I'm only letting one go."

"Otherwise, one of you will be the one I kill."

"Heh heh heh."

At that moment, I was no longer the hero who had saved them. I was a demon, one whose presence made them tremble.

Jack finally broke, his face contorted with panic. The princess was a valuable prize, but if he lost his own life here, all his years of effort would be for nothing.

"My lord, just keep her!" he blurted out, his voice shaking. "It's not just me—we both decided, didn't we, Lucy?"

Lucy looked at him, a flicker of disappointment in her eyes. But then she thought of the dull life waiting for her back home, the uninteresting people. If letting the man she liked live meant she had to die, she would be happy.

Jack had helped her so much. It was time to repay him.

I almost burst out laughing. All it took was one sentence, and he completely exposed himself. What truly baffled me was that Lucy still hadn't realized.

Her precious Jack was not what he seemed. This poor girl was completely clueless.

"Heh heh heh, leaving her behind is a good idea. But you're a man. How can you let a woman stay? I have my principles—I kill men, not women. So…"

At that, Jack nearly lost it. What the hell was this guy playing at? He was clearly targeting him. If he weren't so terrified of me, he would have kicked him into next week.

He forced a smile and said, "My lord, you can't say that. If you've never killed a woman, you'll have to eventually. Why not get some practice now? It would be for the best."

"I know this is nothing for you, my lord, but women are easier to kill. And besides killing them, you can also… hehe."

A lecherous grin spread across his face. It was then that Lucy finally saw Jack for what he was. She stared at him, bewildered.

"Why are you saying these things? I won't... Even if I die, I won't..."

She glanced at me, at my faint smile, and for a moment, she was lost. Why was this man so handsome?

Jack slapped Lucy across the face. "You useless bitch! When I tell you to do something, you do it! Stop with the damn theatrics!" he snarled, turning to me. "My lord, it was all her! Please, don't kill me!"

"I have so much to offer you."

He frantically pulled out gold coins and other valuables from his clothes.

I simply smiled and began to walk toward him.

Jack panicked and shoved Lucy at me.

"My lord, this woman is top-tier! I haven't even touched her! She's the descendant of an elf. If you sleep with her, you'll gain a huge boost in power!"

"And after you're done with her, killing her will be even more satisfying."

"You bitch! You do whatever I tell you to do! Deceiving you for all these years has been exhausting!"

"What a damn nuisance."
