Fourteen became twenty before anyone finished reacting to fourteen.
Kagetsu felt the number climb through the mark on his arm before the colony’s readout even caught up to it — a cold ripple, entirely unlike the warm, settled ache the eye pattern had carried since Ch. 336.
"Twenty," he said. "Twenty-six. It’s not slowing down."
"I heard," Orochimaru said.
The figure hadn’t moved from where it stood between them and the doorway.
But its stance had — feet wider, weight dropped low, the posture of someone who’d just decided a conversation was finished.
Behind it, the doorway’s maroon light had started to flicker, uneven now, like something on the other side was drawing on it faster than it could replenish.
---
Kagetsu risked a glance down the corridor toward the sealed outer door — the one Orochimaru had torn through in Ch. 324, the one that led back to the rest of the storage wing, to the trays, to anything resembling an exit.
It felt very far away.
The colony’s own trays had gone quiet again after their single unanimous statement in Ch. 336. No commentary. No warnings beyond the readout itself. Just forty-four specimens holding their breath along with the rest of them, waiting to see what the doorway would finish producing.
That silence, Kagetsu thought, was somehow worse than the noise had been.

[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
World: Naruto
Quality: Epic
Effect: Collective bio-processing intelligence, distributed across the colony
Status: Active — Alert Escalated
Report:
— Unidentified doorway signatures: 31, rising
— Signature pattern: fragmented, repeating — each new signature reads as a partial, distorted echo of the one before it
— Closest structural comparison in system history: none
— Prior recommendation (immediate withdrawal) upgraded to: full retreat, immediate
"They’re not individuals," Kagetsu said, watching the numbers resolve. "They’re copies. Bad ones. Like something’s trying to make more of itself and getting worse at it every time it tries."
The figure’s head turned, slow, toward him.
"You’re closer than a readout should get you," it said. "That’s not a compliment. That’s a warning."
---
Minato’s hand hadn’t left Kushina’s wrist since Ch. 336.
"We’re leaving," he said. It wasn’t a suggestion.
"Not yet." Kushina hadn’t looked away from the doorway. "It told us not to let them see my face. That’s not advice for running. That’s advice for hiding."
"Same corridor either way."
"It isn’t, and you know it isn’t."
Minato’s jaw worked, the argument he wanted to make visibly losing to the one he couldn’t quite finish building fast enough. He’d spent this entire night one half-step behind events that kept outrunning him — the seal, the doorway, now this — and Kagetsu could see exactly how much that was costing him to keep swallowing.
"If I’m wrong," Kushina said, quieter, "you can be right about it after."
"That’s not how any of this works and you know it."
"It’s how it’s going to work tonight."
---
The figure exhaled — the first breath Kagetsu had seen it take all night, which meant it either hadn’t needed one before, or hadn’t bothered.
"She’s right," it said. "Running gives them a line to follow. Standing still and staying unseen is harder, but it’s the only version of tonight where nobody finds out why I called her that the hard way."
"Then hide her," Orochimaru said. "Now. However that works."
"It doesn’t work through me touching her again." The figure’s blank half tilted, almost apologetic. "That’s the part none of you are going to like."
---
Kagetsu’s arm seized.
Not pain. Pressure — sudden, specific, like something reaching through the resolved mark from the inside and testing whether the door was still open.
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
Alert — Direct Interface Attempt Detected
Report:
— Source: the figure, not the doorway signatures
— Target: Kagetsu’s resolved arm mark
— Nature of contact: request, not intrusion — colony flags this as qualitatively distinct from every involuntary event recorded since Ch. 328
— Kagetsu retains full response authority
"It’s asking," Kagetsu said, startled. "Not taking. Asking."
The figure met his eyes without a trace of the almost-smile from Ch. 337.
"You’re the second door," it said. "Smaller than hers. Built the same way, same hand. If you let me use it, I can put enough of what’s actually me between her and them that the copies won’t be able to tell which of you is real."
"And if I say no?"
"Then I do this the way I’d have to if you were a stranger to me. Slower. Worse for you specifically."
---
Orochimaru’s hand landed on Kagetsu’s shoulder — not pulling him back, just present, the same gesture from Ch. 334. Leverage, not retreat.
"Your call," he said. "Not mine. Not hers."
Kagetsu looked down at his own arm — the eye pattern, fully open, waiting the way it had been waiting since the day it first appeared with no witnessed cause.
He thought about Ch. 327. About carrying half of something for eleven Chapters without anyone once asking whether he wanted it.
This time, at least, someone was asking.
"Do it," he said. "Fast."
---
The figure closed the distance in a single step and pressed two fingers to the back of Kagetsu’s marked hand — light, precise, nothing like the kunai-wound transfer from Ch. 331.
The eye pattern flared gold instead of maroon.
For one full second Kagetsu felt himself standing in two places at once — his own body, knees locked, breath caught in his throat — and something else behind it, vast and folded down small, pressed up against the inside of his own skin like a hand inside a glove one size too big.
Then it settled.
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
Alert — Signature Overlay Confirmed
Report:
— Kagetsu’s chakra signature: now presenting a partial secondary layer, 60% match to the figure’s own signature
— Kushina’s signature: no longer independently detectable from outside the corridor’s immediate radius
— Effect duration: unknown
— Assessment: functioning as intended, per the figure’s stated goal
"It worked," Kagetsu said, and his own voice came out strange in his ears — doubled, like two throats agreeing to say the same word at once.
Kushina hadn’t moved, but something in her expression had gone tight.
"What did that cost him," she said. Not to the figure. To Orochimaru, like he might actually have an answer.
He didn’t.
---
The first copy reached the doorway threshold and didn’t so much step through as unfold into the corridor — ash-red and pale, split-faced, wrong in a dozen small compounding ways.
The proportions sat off. The blank half of its face didn’t quite level with the ash-red half. Its eyes, when they found the group, tracked half a second behind where the group actually stood, like it was seeing an afterimage instead of the thing itself.
It looked at Kagetsu first.
Then at the figure standing beside him, their two signatures blurred together now at sixty percent.
It made a sound that wasn’t a word — wet, searching, the noise of something trying to remember how a mouth was supposed to work.
Behind it, six more unfolded out of the dark at once.
---
The figure moved before any of them could.
It closed on the first copy in a single stride, faster than anything Kagetsu had seen it do all night, and drove a flat palm into the center of its chest — not a strike meant to kill, more like a shove aimed at something that shouldn’t have been standing there in the first place.
The copy folded backward, wrong-jointed, and didn’t get back up so much as reassemble itself half a step further away, facial proportions swimming into a slightly different configuration of wrong.
"They don’t break the way things are supposed to break," the figure said, not looking back at them. "Every hit just gives them a new shape to be bad at."
Orochimaru’s hand had already found a kunai.
"Then we don’t hit them. We hold the line and let them run out of doorway."
"There isn’t a bottom to that doorway," the figure said. "Not tonight."
---
"They can’t tell," the figure added, watching the first six spread out and fan toward the walls, feeling for something none of them seemed able to locate directly. "Good. That buys us time."
"Time for what," Kushina said.
The figure didn’t answer her.
It was already moving to meet the next copy head-on, low and fast, weight dropped the way it had been the moment the conversation had ended, and the last thing it said before the corridor broke fully into motion wasn’t to any of them at all.
It was to itself — low enough that only the mark on Kagetsu’s arm caught it clean, the words arriving less like sound and more like something felt directly through the gold-flared eye pattern.
"Don’t let it get close enough to count you twice."
