"You’re late."
The words sat in the corridor like they’d been waiting there longer than the doorway had existed.
Kushina didn’t move. Neither did Minato, whose hand was still locked around her wrist, knuckles white, like letting go now would be the thing that finally made this real.
"Late for what," she said. "I don’t know you."
The figure tilted its head — ash-red half first, then the pale, blank half following a half-second behind, like the two sides of its face didn’t quite move on the same clock.
"You wouldn’t," it said. "Not yet. Not from where you’re standing."

[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
World: Naruto
Quality: Epic
Effect: Collective bio-processing intelligence, distributed across the colony
Status: Active — direct sensory contact with entity established
Report:
— Entity chakra signature: fully resolved, matches "the presence" contact from Ch. 329 at 88% structural overlap
— NOT a match for the Ch. 326 reconstructed residue signature — divergence confirmed
— Working theory: the split-faced figure and "the presence" from Ch. 329 may be the same entity, observed at different levels of manifestation
"It’s not two things," Kagetsu said, still on one knee, reading the numbers as they climbed. "It’s the same thing we’ve been calling two things since Ch. 329."
The figure’s blank half turned toward him — slow, deliberate, the first time it had acknowledged him directly since Ch. 330.
"He’s not stupid," it said to Kushina, like that settled something. "Good. That’ll matter."
---
Orochimaru hadn’t moved either, but his stance had — weight shifted subtly forward, the specific readiness of a man deciding, in real time, whether the next ten seconds required a kunai or a question.
He chose the question.
"Late for what," he said. "Say it plainly or don’t say it at all."
The figure looked at him for the first time.
Something in its blank half almost smiled — not quite, more the shape a smile leaves behind after it’s gone.
"You’re the one who’s been hurting me all night," it said. "Kunai. Suppression seal. A fingertip, testing an edge like it was a door you didn’t trust. All fair. I’d have done the same." A pause. "I’m not angry. I want that understood before anything else."
"That wasn’t the question."
"No," the figure agreed. "It wasn’t."
---
It turned back to Kushina, and this time it stepped forward — one step, out of the doorway proper and into the corridor itself, maroon light trailing off its shoulders like water sheeting off something that had just surfaced.
Minato’s grip tightened again.
"Four months ago," the figure said, "you used a piece of your family’s craft to hold a line during a drill you didn’t think anyone outside your clan was watching."
Kushina went very still.
"Nobody was watching," she said slowly. "I checked."
"I wasn’t watching from anywhere you’d have checked."

[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
Alert — New Correlation Found
Report:
— Cross-referencing Ch. 332 data: Orochimaru’s suppression seal was reverse-engineered from observing Kushina "four months prior" (per Ch. 332 Chapter log)
— The entity has now independently referenced the same four-month timeframe, unprompted
— Statistical likelihood of coincidence: colony flags as negligible
"Orochimaru." Kagetsu’s voice had gone tight. "It just corroborated your own timeline. The one you never said out loud in front of it."
Orochimaru’s jaw set.
"I didn’t."
"I know," Kagetsu said. "That’s the problem."
---
The figure didn’t seem to notice the exchange, or didn’t care.
Its attention stayed on Kushina, ash-red half catching the corridor’s remaining light at an angle that made it look, for one unsettling second, almost gentle.
"You’re going to ask what I am," it said. "Everyone always asks that first. Wrong question. Ask what I’m not."
"Fine," Kushina said, jaw tight. "What aren’t you."
"I’m not what he is." A tilt of the head, vague, toward nothing Kagetsu could see — but the colony’s readout answered before anyone had to ask.
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
Report:
— Entity gesture direction: cross-referenced against known signature locations
— Closest match: the larger, Madara-consistent signature identified via Ch. 325 Signature Discrimination
— Confidence: moderate — gesture-based inference only, not a direct reading
"Madara," Orochimaru said flatly. "You’re telling us you’re not with him."
"I’m telling you I’m not him," the figure said. "There’s a difference, and it’s the only one that’s going to matter to you before this is over."
---
Kagetsu forced himself upright, the newly-resolved eye pattern along his arm aching in a way that felt less like pain now and more like a muscle he hadn’t known he had, flexed for the first time.
"Then what are you," he said. "Not what you’re not. What."
The figure looked at him again — longer this time, weighing something.
"Something that got left somewhere it shouldn’t have been," it said. "A long time before any of you were born. I’ve been finding my way back out ever since, and she—" the blank half tilted toward Kushina "—is the only door anyone ever built that I could actually use."
"Back out of where," Kushina said.
The figure’s mouth — both halves, ash-red and pale, moving together for the first time — opened to answer.
---
And then the colony’s readout changed shape entirely, mid-line, the calm procedural format buckling into something closer to alarm.
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
Alert — Signature Multiplication Detected
Report:
— New signatures entering doorway threshold: 3, then 7, then 14 — rising
— None match the entity currently present
— None match any catalogued signature in system history
— Recommendation: immediate withdrawal from corridor
The figure’s head snapped toward the doorway behind it — genuine surprise, the first unguarded expression it had shown since arriving.
"That’s not supposed to be possible yet," it said, quieter than anything it had said so far, almost to itself.
Then, louder, to all four of them at once:
"Whatever happens in the next ten seconds — don’t let them see her face."
Behind it, in the dark beyond the doorway, something that wasn’t one thing anymore started moving toward the light.
