"Almost."
The word hung in the corridor like it had weight.
Kagetsu felt it settle into the mark along his jaw, warm and patient, the way a held breath settles right before someone finally lets it out.
Three minutes.
"Kushina, don't."
Minato's hand was already on her wrist.
"We're out of better ideas," she said. "You know we are."

[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
World: Naruto
Quality: Epic
Effect: Collective bio-processing intelligence, distributed across the colony
Status: Active — Tracking Corridor Seven wall-seal
Report:
— Wall-seal structural completion: 91%
— Estimated time to completion: 2 minutes, 40 seconds
— Inner grain color shift: ash-red → deep maroon, 100% of visible surface
— New reading: door-shaped center now producing a faint, second chakra signature distinct from the seal's outer structure
"There's something already in it," Kagetsu said, reading it off as it updated. "Not making it. In it."
Orochimaru's eyes narrowed.
"Waiting behind the door, or built into the lock?"
"The colony can't tell. It says the signature's too faint to separate from the seal's own chakra."
---
Kushina pulled her wrist free — gently, not a wrench, just enough that Minato's hand came away.
"Two minutes forty," she said. "If I don't try, it finishes anyway, on its own terms, with nobody's hand on it at all. I'd rather it open because somebody chose that than because a timer ran out."
"That's not a comfort," Minato said. "That's just a reason."
"It's the only one I've got."
He looked at her for a long moment — the kind of look that wasn't asking permission anymore, because he already knew he wasn't going to get a different answer.
"Then I'm not letting go of you while you do it."
"Minato—"
"That's not a negotiation."
---
Orochimaru moved to stand at Kagetsu's shoulder instead of the seal, which was itself a decision — the closest thing to trust he'd shown all night, choosing to watch the person instead of the wall.
"If this goes wrong," he said, low, "I want you ready to pull whatever's left of Divergent Expression into a full lockdown read. If we're going to lose data, I want it captured, not guessed at."
"You think it's going to go wrong."
"I think we don't know what right looks like yet. That's worse."
Kagetsu didn't argue.
His jaw ached in a slow ash-red line, and some part of him — quiet, small, easy to miss under the noise of the last ten minutes — recognized that whatever was about to happen to Kushina was going to happen to him too, one way or another. He was the smaller half. The colony had said so itself.
He just didn't know yet what "smaller" would end up costing him.
---
Kushina stepped forward.
The corridor felt colder the closer she got, not from any draft — there wasn't one — but from something in the wall-seal itself reacting to her presence the way a held-in breath reacts to being finally allowed out.
The maroon grain brightened as she approached. Not flaring. Focusing.
Like a held gaze narrowing on the one person it had been waiting for.
"It knows I'm here," she said quietly. "It knew before I moved."
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
Report:
— Wall-seal structural completion: 96%
— Estimated time to completion: 41 seconds
— Second internal signature strengthening in direct proportion to Kushina's proximity — confirmed correlation, not coincidence
"Forty seconds," Kagetsu said. "Kushina—"
"I know."
---
She raised her hand.
Minato's grip on her other wrist tightened, but he didn't pull. He'd promised not to negotiate. He hadn't promised not to hold on.
Her palm hovered an inch from the door-shaped center, close enough to feel the heat radiating off it — not the burn of a weapon, but the specific, deliberate warmth of something built for exactly this.
"If this is a door," she said, mostly to herself, "then I'm not knocking. I'm answering."
She pressed her palm flat against the seal.
---
The corridor went white.
Not blackout — the opposite. Every surface, every shadow, burned out in a single flash of maroon-gold light so total that Kagetsu lost Orochimaru beside him, lost the walls, lost his own hands in front of his face.
The mark on his jaw ignited.
Not pain. Recognition — a completion, something in his own body clicking into a shape it had been half-built into since Ch. 327, finally finding the other half of itself and locking.
Somewhere in the white, Kushina made a sound that wasn't quite a scream and wasn't quite a laugh, high and startled, like something enormous had just looked directly at her and she hadn't expected it to feel like relief.

[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
Alert — Total Sensor Overload
Report:
— Wall-seal structural completion: 100%
— Status: COMPLETE
— Kagetsu's arm mark: fully resolved, eye pattern open across entire limb
— All colony trays report simultaneous activation, unprompted, first time in program history
— Collective statement, verbatim, all forty-four trays in unison: "SHE'S HOME."
The light dropped away all at once.
Kagetsu's knees hit the floor before his eyes finished adjusting.
The wall where the seal had been wasn't a wall anymore.
It was a doorway — genuinely open, edges still smoking faint maroon, leading into a space that had no business existing behind a dead-end corridor in a Konoha storage wing.
And standing in the opening, one hand still raised where it had met Kushina's on the other side, was the split-faced figure — clear, solid, undeniably present for the first time, close enough to touch.
It wasn't looking at Kagetsu.
It wasn't looking at Orochimaru.
It was looking at Kushina, ash-red half of its face tilting the way someone tilts their head at a person they've missed for a very long time, and it finally, finally said something longer than one word.
"You're late."
