The crack reached the center and the seal didn’t shatter.
It exhaled.
Blue light poured out of the failure line like water finding a gap in a dam — not an explosion, not a burst, just pressure finding the fastest way out. The twelve copies inside went from contained to loose in the space between one heartbeat and the next.
Eleven of them dropped instantly back into their normal half-second drift, disoriented, ash-red-and-pale again, no different from any other copy in the corridor.
The twelfth didn’t.
The corridor lights flickered once, the way they had before the Ch. 331 blackout, and steadied. Nobody breathed easy for it. The other twenty-nine free copies had stopped their slow half-second drift entirely, every one of them turned toward the same point in space, watching the twelfth the way a crowd watches the first domino go.

[Talent Card: Divergent Expression — Live Analysis]
World: Bleach
Quality: Epic
Status: Critical
Finding: Containment failure complete. Eleven copies reverted to baseline. Twelfth copy signature has stopped matching copy-baseline entirely — currently reading as 71% match to the fourth signature and rising.
Recommendation: Treat the twelfth copy as a live extension of the fourth signature, not a copy. Immediate reassessment of threat priority required.

Kagetsu read it twice before he trusted it.
"It’s not becoming a copy anymore," he said. "It’s becoming it."
The twelfth copy’s blue hadn’t faded with the others. If anything it had gotten denser, pulling inward, the broken half-face reshaping itself one degree at a time into something that still wasn’t quite a face but had stopped looking accidental.
Orochimaru moved first — not toward Kushina this time, toward the thing itself, kunai already reversing grip for a throw.
"Don’t." Kushina’s hand shot out, not to stop the kunai, to stop him. "Not yet."
"It just used you as a speaker for three minutes and cracked the one seal we had holding anything back. I think ’not yet’ already ran out."
"It didn’t attack anyone. Twelve copies were about to reach me and it stopped them doing that. That’s not nothing."
"It didn’t stop them, Kushina, it replaced them. There’s a difference."
"I know there’s a difference. I’m asking you to give me thirty seconds to find out which one this actually is before you decide for both of us."
The figure’s voice cut through the mark, sharper than anything it had said all night.
She’s right. And it doesn’t matter. Get back.
Kagetsu felt the urgency in it land before the words finished forming — not the careful, deliberate cadence the figure had used since Ch. 337, something closer to genuine fear.
"Why."
Because I know what happens next and none of you are going to like watching it.
---
The twelfth copy finished reshaping.
Where a broken half-face had been, there was now something whole — not human, not quite the figure’s own split design either, blue light running through it in the same grain pattern that had once carried ash-red. It didn’t look at Kushina. It didn’t look at the figure.
It looked at Kagetsu’s arm.
Specifically the mark.
"There it is," it said, in its own voice now, no longer borrowing the twelve-copy chorus. Softer than before. Almost gentle. "I wondered if he’d actually go through with it."
Kagetsu’s arm went numb from the wrist up, the cold spreading faster than it ever had before, and for a moment the mark’s gold overlay flickered — not fading, just uncertain, like it couldn’t decide which signature it was supposed to be answering to anymore.
The figure stepped physically between Kagetsu and the reshaped copy for the first time since this fight had started — not through the mark, not from a distance, closing the gap itself.
"Leave him out of this."
"He’s not out of it. He hasn’t been out of it since the day you decided he made a convenient door." A pause, and something in the reshaped copy’s posture shifted, unmistakably amused in a way that had nothing to do with the fight around it. "You didn’t tell them that part either, did you."
Minato’s kunai was already gone, planted three feet from Kagetsu’s position, the fallback marker waiting. He didn’t throw himself toward it yet. He was watching the figure’s back, the way it had gone rigid in a way it hadn’t for anything else tonight.
"Tell us what," Minato said. "Now would be a good time."
The figure didn’t answer him. It was still looking at the reshaped copy, and for the first time all arc, it looked like it didn’t have a plan.
"Kushina asked you a version of this same question back in Ch. 333," Minato pressed. "You gave her a real answer that day. Give us one now."
"This isn’t the same question." The figure’s voice had lost the careful cadence entirely, raw in a way that matched what Kagetsu had felt through the mark a minute earlier. "That question I could afford to answer."
"And this one?"
"This one costs something I already spent once. I don’t get to spend it twice."
Kushina’s eyes narrowed. "That’s not an answer."
"No," the figure said. "It isn’t."

[Talent Card: Divergent Expression — Alert]
World: Bleach
Quality: Epic
Status: Escalated
Finding: The three doorway signatures showing pre-unison stillness (flagged Ch. 341) have stopped drifting entirely. Signature match to the reshaped twelfth copy: 94% and climbing. Doorway threshold count: 51.
Recommendation: The pattern from Ch. 340 is repeating at the doorway. Estimated time to unison event: under sixty seconds.
---
"Kagetsu." Orochimaru’s voice, flat, already counting. "Talk to me."
"Three more are about to do what that one just did. Maybe more once they see it work." Kagetsu’s mark had gone cold again, colder than before, like it was bracing for something. "Whatever this thing actually is, it’s not just talking through copies anymore. It’s making one of them into itself. If it does that four more times, we’re not fighting forty-some fragments anymore. We’re fighting one thing wearing forty-some bodies."
"Can you stop it happening at the doorway?"
"Not from here. Not without a signature to counter it with, and the only original signatures in this corridor belong to us."
Orochimaru’s jaw tightened. "Then we take the one we can still reach."
"Then we don’t let it get to four," he said, and threw.
The kunai crossed the distance in a blink, aimed dead center at the reshaped copy’s chest.
It didn’t dodge.
It didn’t need to.
The kunai passed through blue light and struck the wall behind it, embedding itself two inches deep, and the reshaped copy hadn’t so much as flinched.
Orochimaru’s expression didn’t change, but Kagetsu had spent enough months reading him to catch the half-second recalculation behind it — the same look he’d worn back in Ch. 331 when his first kunai had struck something solid and Kagetsu had taken the wound for it. This time there hadn’t even been that. No resistance at all. Nothing to push back against.
"It’s not solid anymore," Orochimaru said, more to himself than anyone. "It’s not solid and it’s not nothing. What is it standing on."
"That won’t work anymore," it said, almost apologetic. "I’m not borrowing a body this time. I’m in one." It turned, finally, toward Kushina, and its voice dropped into something that made Minato’s Hiraishin marker suddenly feel very far away. "You still don’t remember me. That’s alright. You will."
Kagetsu’s mark flared gold without warning, hard enough that he staggered a half-step, and the figure’s head turned toward him for just a fraction of a second — long enough for Kagetsu to see something that looked almost like an apology cross whatever passed for its expression.
Whatever you feel in the next ten seconds isn’t yours. I’m sorry. There wasn’t a version of tonight where I didn’t need it.
Kagetsu didn’t have time to ask what "it" meant.
It took a single step toward her.
Behind it, at the doorway, all three still signatures turned the exact same shade of blue at once.
