Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 454 350 : Not Listening Anymore!!

The figure hit the mouth of Corridor Seven at a dead run.

No drift. No careful, unhurried step.

Just speed, ash-red and pale, closing the distance like something was chasing it.

Orochimaru moved first, kunai already reversed in his grip, putting himself between the figure and Kushina on reflex alone.

Minato's hand found his three-pronged kunai a half-second behind him.

Neither strike landed. The figure skidded to a stop six feet out, both hands raised, palms open, chest working like it needed air it didn't actually breathe.

"Don't," it said. "Not me. Not right now."

Kagetsu felt it before anyone spoke again — his arm mark, flaring hot in a way that had nothing to do with restricted topics.

This wasn't the slow correlating warmth from the interrogation.

This was closer to the gold flare from Ch. 345. Immediate. Physical. Demanding attention.

"Kagetsu." Orochimaru, not looking away from the figure. "Status."

"It's not warm like before." Kagetsu pressed his other hand flat over the mark, like that would help. "It's — pulling. Like something's trying to get a grip on it."

[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]

World: Naruto (continuation)

Quality: Epic

Effect: New reading detected on the arm mark — pull-pattern, distinct from the Ch. 349 correlating warmth (passive) and the Ch. 345 gold flare (transfer-event). Classification: active engagement attempt, origin exterior to the corridor. Confidence: high. Recommendation: Kagetsu should not suppress or resist the sensation until source is identified — insufficient data on consequences of interruption.

"That's new," Orochimaru said flatly. To the figure: "Explain. Now."

The figure's split face didn't have much range for expression, but the ash-red side had gone tighter, like a held breath given shape.

"The thing you had chained." It didn't look at where the doorway-thing had been. Didn't need to. "It didn't just answer questions. It spent itself. All of it. Every last piece of what it was allowed to give — it gave to her." A tilt of its head toward Kushina. "That's not a small thing. That's not something it does casually."

"It told her what to look for," Minato said. "That's all we saw."

"That's not all it was." The figure's voice had an edge Kagetsu hadn't heard in it before — not fear exactly. Something closer to grief with no time to be grief yet. "That thing existed to be a promise. Once a promise is fully paid, it doesn't get to exist anymore. It's gone because it finished. Do you understand what that means?"

Nobody answered.

"It means the promise is closed," the figure said. "Which means the one who was owed it knows. Right now. Not eventually. Now."

Kushina's chains, still coiled loose at her sides from Ch. 349, tightened without her willing it.

"He's listening through Kagetsu's mark," she said slowly, working it out in real time. "That's not new. You said that yourself, last chapter's worth of questions ago."

"Listening isn't the same as reaching," the figure said. "He's spent four months listening. Patient. Passive. Content to watch through a door somebody else built for him." Its eyes — mismatched, one dull ash-red, one pale and near-blank — fixed on Kagetsu's marked arm. "He just heard the one thing that would make him stop being patient."

"What thing," Orochimaru said. Not a question. A demand.

"Her clan's name and the word taken in the same breath." The figure didn't look away from the mark. "I don't know what he wants from Uzushiogakure. I've never known. That's the truth, and it's the first true thing I've told you that I actually wish wasn't true. But I know what he does when something he's waited on finally moves."

The pull in Kagetsu's arm sharpened.

Not painful. Worse than painful — deliberate. Testing weight, the way a hand tests a door to see if it's locked before deciding whether to knock or force it.

"Kagetsu." Orochimaru's voice snapped him back. "Talk to me."

"It's still just testing." Kagetsu made himself breathe evenly, the way Orochimaru had drilled into him for exactly this kind of moment. "Like it's — checking if I notice. If I react."

"Don't react," the figure said immediately. "Whatever you do, don't answer it."

"I'm not doing anything."

"You don't have to do anything. It wants to know if the door opens from your side without you meaning to open it." The figure's hands were still up, still empty, still six feet back like getting closer might make things worse instead of better. "It's never tried this before. Four months of listening and it has never once tried to reach. That's what changed. That's why I ran."

Minato's kunai hadn't lowered. "You said you couldn't stop the wall-seal. You said you didn't have a version of tonight where you could protect both of them at once. What can you actually do right now?"

The figure was quiet for a beat too long.

"I can be loud," it finally said. "That's the only thing I've ever actually been able to do near him. I can make enough noise on my end that maybe — maybe — he decides testing a locked door isn't worth the effort tonight."

"Loud how," Kushina said.

"I don't have a good answer for that. It's never worked cleanly before." The figure's gaze flicked to Kagetsu's arm one more time, and something in it looked almost apologetic. "It's going to hurt him. I'm sorry. There isn't a version where it doesn't."

[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]

World: Naruto (continuation)

Quality: Epic

Effect: The figure's stated intent — an unspecified counter-action targeting the same channel currently under exterior engagement — cannot be modeled with existing data. No historical precedent on file. Recommendation withheld. First occurrence of Divergent Expression declining to issue even a partial risk estimate.

"No recommendation," Kagetsu said out loud, half to himself. "That's — it did that with the doorway signatures. Right before they turned blue."

"I'm aware," Orochimaru said. His kunai hadn't moved, but his eyes had gone from the figure to Kagetsu's arm and back, weighing something. "Figure. If this goes wrong — if you're 'loud' and it doesn't work — what happens to him?"

"I don't know." No hedge in it. No performance. "I've never let it get this far before. This is new for both of us."

Kushina stepped forward, chains loosening as she moved, deliberate. "Then we don't let you gamble with him. There has to be —"

"There isn't time for a better plan," the figure cut in, and for the first time all arc it sounded genuinely rushed, genuinely out of options rather than withholding them. "It's not testing anymore. Kagetsu — tell me the second it stops feeling like a hand and starts feeling like a grip."

The pull in Kagetsu's arm changed.

Not gradually. All at once, the way a held breath finally lets go.

Testing became grip.

Grip became something else entirely — a presence, sudden and enormous and utterly unhurried, settling into the space behind his own eyes like it had been invited in and was only now bothering to accept.

Kagetsu's knees buckled. Orochimaru caught him before he hit the ground, one arm locked under his shoulders, shouting something that came through half a second late and badly distorted, like sound underwater.

The figure was already moving — not toward Kagetsu, but past him, both hands driving forward into empty air like it was shoving something back through a door only it could see.

And then, from somewhere that wasn't Kagetsu's own throat, using breath that wasn't his to use, a voice spoke.

Calm. Unbothered. Almost fond.

"There he is," it said. "Hello, little door. Let's finally talk properly."
