Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 455 - 351 : Little Door!!

"— and here I thought," Kagetsu’s mouth said, in a voice that was not his own, "you’d have better manners than to interrupt."

Orochimaru still had him by the shoulders. Didn’t let go.

Kagetsu’s eyes were open. Kagetsu was not behind them.

The figure hadn’t stopped moving since it started — both hands still driving forward into the air, into nothing, into something none of the rest of them could see. Sweat, or whatever the figure had instead of sweat, tracked down the pale half of its face.

"Get out of him," the figure said. Not a request. Barely even words — more like the shape a threat makes when there’s no strength left to put behind it.

"Rude." Kagetsu’s head tilted, slow, curious, entirely wrong. "I only just got comfortable."

Kushina’s chains snapped taut around her wrists, coiled and ready, going nowhere because there was nothing here a chain could hold. Minato’s kunai was in his hand. Also going nowhere, for the same reason.

"You don’t get to touch him," Kushina said.

The head turned toward her. Kagetsu’s face, doing an expression Kagetsu had never once made — something between fond and hungry.

"Uzumaki." A pause, almost reverent. "You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to hear that name said out loud in front of me. Your mother used to say it like it was a promise. You say it like a threat. I like that better, honestly."

"You know my mother."

"I know a great many things about your mother." The mouth that wasn’t Kagetsu’s smiled, and it was the worst thing Kagetsu’s face had ever done. "You’ll get there. You’re already closer than you think — closer than that little dead thing wanted you to be, if we’re honest about who sent you looking."

Effect: Direct vocal channel established for the first time — partial signature read now possible during active speech. Result: 34% match to the Madara-consistent baseline established Ch. 325. Not conclusive. Not zero. First confirmed non-zero overlap between "he" and the Madara-consistent trace on file.

"Thirty-four percent," Orochimaru said, low, mostly to himself. "That’s not nothing."

"It’s also not an answer," the voice said, and somehow it sounded pleased that Orochimaru had said it out loud. "Snake. You always did want the tidy number instead of the true one. I remember that about you too, if you’re curious. Everyone in this corridor is a little more known to me than you’d like."

"Then you know I’m about to make you regret staying this long."

"I know you can’t reach me. That’s the whole point of a door, isn’t it. You use the one that’s open." The voice paused, and when it went on, it was quieter, almost gentle, aimed somewhere past all of them. "Kagetsu. Are you in there, still listening? I’d hate to be rude to an empty room."

Something in Kagetsu’s chest — his chest, still his, somewhere under all of this — turned cold at hearing his own name used like that.

He couldn’t speak. Couldn’t move his own mouth. But he could hear. He’d always been able to hear, the whole time, trapped somewhere just behind his own eyes, watching his hands move for someone else.

"There you are," the voice said, satisfied, answering a reaction only it could sense. "Good. I want you awake for this part. You’ve been very useful tonight, little door, and I don’t say that to many things anymore."

The figure’s driving hands finally found purchase on something.

The air around Kagetsu began to hum — low, physical, a pressure building behind the eyes of everyone still standing close enough to feel it.

"What are you doing," Minato said.

"Being loud," the figure gritted out, not looking away from Kagetsu, sweat-slick and shaking with effort. "Exactly what I said I would. I hope you’re all braced for it, because I only get to do this once tonight and I am already regretting the honesty."

The hum became a tone. The tone became a pressure that had weight, that pushed against the corridor walls like something trying to get bigger than the space allowed.

Kagetsu’s borrowed voice laughed — actually laughed, delighted rather than alarmed.

"Oh, that’s clever," it said. "That’s very clever. You’ve gotten better at this since the last time you tried it on me."

"There wasn’t supposed to be a last time," the figure snarled. "You were supposed to stay exactly where I left you."

"Nothing stays where it’s left. You, of all things, should understand that by now."

The pressure spiked.

Kagetsu felt it as a physical wrenching, like something was being peeled away from the inside of his own skull — not painless, not close to painless, but distant, muffled, the way pain feels underwater.

Effect: The figure’s countermeasure is generating a localized signature-disruption field, actively degrading the exterior connection’s hold on the mark’s channel. Occupation integrity: falling — 100% (full) at Chapter start, currently 61% and dropping. Rate of decline: accelerating. Estimated full expulsion: under sixty seconds if the current rate holds. Caution: rate is not guaranteed to remain linear.

"He’s losing him," Kushina said, watching Kagetsu’s face flicker — his own eyes for half a second, gone again, back to that wrong, patient stillness. "Kagetsu, if you can hear me, hold on."

"He can hear you," the voice confirmed, almost helpfully, though its edges had started to fray, its cadence stuttering half a beat behind itself now, like a recording losing sync with its own sound. "He can hear all of you. That won’t change when I leave. I want that understood before I go, because I am going, your little door has made sure of that, and I find I respect the effort too much to pretend otherwise."

"Then go," the figure said. "And don’t come back."

"I’m not going to promise that." The voice was thinning now, losing shape at the edges the way smoke loses shape in wind. "I’ve waited four months for a door I could actually use. I’m not walking away from the first real conversation I’ve had in longer than that just because you made some noise." A beat. "Besides. I’m not leaving empty-handed."

Kagetsu felt it before he understood it — something small, something deliberate, settling into the mark like a stone dropped into still water. Not a grip. Not occupation. Something quieter than either. A splinter, driven in and left there on purpose, too small to fight and too deep to simply pull back out.

"There," the voice said, fainter now, already halfway gone. "A little something to remember me by. Don’t worry — it won’t bother you. Not yet."

Effect: New signature detected within the mark, distinct from Kagetsu’s own baseline and from the departing exterior signature — small, static, non-active. Classification: unknown. First occurrence of this pattern on file. Recommendation: monitor continuously; do not attempt removal without further data.

"What did you just do," Orochimaru said, sharp enough to cut.

"Left the porch light on." Barely a whisper now, more felt than heard. "Tell the Uzumaki girl I said her mother would be proud of how loud she’s gotten. Tell the snake his numbers are close enough. And tell the little door—"

The pressure broke.

All at once, the way a held breath finally, finally lets go the other direction.

Kagetsu’s knees gave out entirely. Orochimaru went down with him, easing him to the corridor floor instead of letting him drop, one hand already at his throat checking for a pulse that turned out, after one very long second, to still be there.

Kagetsu’s eyes opened. His own eyes. His own face, slack with exhaustion, blinking up at ceiling light that finally looked like ceiling light again.

"—it’s rude," he finished, in his own voice, hoarse and confused and entirely his, "to leave before dessert."

Nobody laughed.

The figure collapsed to one knee, both hands braced against the corridor floor, breathing — or doing whatever it did instead of breathing — like it had just run the distance twice.

"He’s gone," it said. "For now. That’s the best I’ve got. I bought us for now."

Kagetsu tried to sit up. Made it halfway, propped against Orochimaru’s arm, and stopped there, staring down at his own marked forearm like it belonged to someone else.

The eye-shaped mark was closed, quiet, ordinary-looking for the first time all night.

Except for one thing.

Deep in the center of it, where there had never been anything before, something the size of a pinprick pulsed once. Slow. Patient. Perfectly in time with a heartbeat that wasn’t his.
