Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 456 - 352 : What’s Already Listening!!

Nobody moved for a while.

Kagetsu sat with his back against the corridor wall, knees drawn up, the taste of somebody else’s voice still sitting wrong in his throat. Orochimaru hadn’t stepped more than an arm’s length away since letting him down onto the floor. The figure knelt where it had collapsed, hands flat on the ground, not trying to stand yet.

Minato was the one who finally spoke.

"We’re not leaving that thing in his arm because nobody wants to be the one who suggests looking at it first."

"I wasn’t going to suggest waiting," Orochimaru said. "I was going to suggest doing it properly."

Kagetsu looked down at his own forearm. The mark was closed, quiet, ordinary in every way except for the pinprick at its center — still there, still faintly warm under his fingers, still keeping time with a pulse that wasn’t his.

"Do it," he said. "While he’s not — while it’s just us."

Orochimaru crouched in front of him but didn’t touch the mark. Not yet.

"Colony," he said. "Full remote read. No contact. I want to know what we’re dealing with before anyone puts a hand on it."

[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]

World: Naruto (continuation)

Quality: Epic

Effect: Beginning full remote signature discrimination on the implanted foreign signature ("the splinter"). No physical contact required — reading conducted via existing colony resonance with Kagetsu’s chakra network. Estimated completion: several minutes. Caution: this is the first attempt at reading a signature this small; resolution may be limited.

The corridor went quiet in a different way while they waited. Not the tense quiet from before. Something closer to held breath.

Kushina crouched beside Kagetsu, close enough that her shoulder nearly touched his. "How does it feel? Not the pulse. You. Right now."

"Tired." He managed something close to a smile. "Which feels like a strange thing to be worried about, all things considered."

"Tired’s fine. Tired I can work with." She didn’t smile back, not quite. "It’s the other stuff I want a number on."

The figure spoke without lifting its head. "Ask it something for me, when it’s ready."

"Ask it what," Orochimaru said.

"Whether it’s alone in there." A pause, heavier than the words should have carried. "That would tell me more than almost anything else you could learn from it."

Nobody asked what the figure meant by alone. Nobody wanted to be the one who found out it meant something worse than the obvious reading.

[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]

World: Naruto (continuation)

Quality: Epic

Effect: Remote read complete. Results:

— Signature size: negligible; smallest chakra-origin point on file.

— Composition: NOT a fragment of the exterior signature ("he") that implanted it. Distinct point of origin.

— Partial match, source candidate family: 19%.

— Partial match, Madara-consistent baseline: 11%.

— Partial match, split-faced figure: 6%.

— Partial match, "he" (Ch. 351 vocal read): 4%.

— Remaining ~60% of signature: unclassified, no match on file to any tracked entity.

— Status: dormant. No active output. No indication of growth.

Recommendation: the splinter is neither purely "his" nor a copy of any known entity. Composite or independent origin cannot be ruled out. Confidence in this reading: moderate — smallest sample ever processed.

Orochimaru read it twice before he spoke.

"It’s not him," he said slowly. "Not mostly, anyway. Four percent."

"Then what is it," Minato asked.

"Something he’s carrying." The figure finally lifted its head, and whatever had been holding its face together through exhaustion cracked, just slightly, into something that looked almost like recognition. "Or something he wanted you to think he was carrying. I can’t tell which from here, and I hate that I can’t tell you which."

"You know something," Kushina said. Not a question.

"I know a shape when I see one, even a small one." The figure’s mismatched eyes hadn’t left Kagetsu’s arm since the reading finished. "I’ve felt something like that before. A long time before tonight. I don’t have a name for it that would mean anything to you, and I’m not going to guess out loud and be wrong about something this small sitting inside him."

"Try anyway," Orochimaru said.

"No." Flat. Final, in a way the figure hadn’t been all night. "If I’m wrong, you’ll build a plan around being wrong, and it’s already inside him. I won’t do that twice in one night."

Kagetsu flexed his hand, watching the pinprick mark shift with the motion — still dormant, still quiet, sixty percent of it unaccounted for by anything anyone in the corridor had ever met.

"Sixty percent unclassified," he said. "That’s not comforting."

"No," Orochimaru agreed. "It isn’t."

Kushina had gone still beside him, staring at the readout the colony had left hovering — those same six lines, over and over, like reading them again might change one of the numbers.

"Sixty percent unclassified," she repeated, quieter. "Orochimaru. What did the colony say about the source candidate? First time it showed up?"

"Seventy-one percent match to the vessel. Sixty-eight to the doorway-thing." He caught up to her thought half a beat behind. "Zero to the figure. Zero to your baseline."

"And this thing’s only nineteen percent to that whole family." Kushina’s jaw tightened. "That’s not a relative. That’s barely an acquaintance."

"Which means whatever the other sixty percent is," Minato said, "isn’t anything we’ve catalogued at all. Not the figure’s family. Not the source candidate’s. Not Madara’s, mostly."

"Something new," Kagetsu said. "Great."

The figure made a sound that might have been a laugh, if it had any humor left in it to spend. "Welcome to the part where I stop being able to tell you it’s fine."

Kushina reached toward Kagetsu’s arm — not touching, just close, the way you’d hover a hand near something fragile without daring to pick it up.

"He said the word taken like he already knew the answer," she said, half to herself now. "Like he’d been there for it. If this thing’s not him — if it’s something he’s been carrying — then maybe it’s not new at all. Maybe it’s old. Maybe it’s from wherever he was carrying it from." She looked up, and something in her expression had gone sharp, focused, the way it had the moment she’d first identified the wall-seal’s inner ring back in Ch. 333. "Uzushiogakure."

The pinprick warmed.

Not the slow correlating heat from Ch. 349. Not the testing pull from Ch. 350. Something smaller, quicker, unmistakably reactive — a flicker of warmth exactly in time with the word leaving her mouth.

Everyone in the corridor felt the shift in the air at once.

"He said it wouldn’t bother me yet," Kagetsu said, very carefully, not moving his arm at all. "He didn’t say it couldn’t hear."

The figure was on its feet before anyone else had finished processing the sentence, exhaustion forgotten, every line of it gone sharp with something closer to fear than Kagetsu had seen from it all night.

"Don’t say that word again," it said. "Not here. Not yet. Whatever’s listening through that thing just heard you say it, and I don’t know yet whether it can tell anyone."
