Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 457 353 : Outside The Corridor!!

"We're not staying here to test whether it does it twice," Orochimaru said. "Kagetsu can't take another hit like Ch. 350 tonight. We move."

Nobody argued.

Kushina got an arm under Kagetsu's shoulder before he could protest he was fine. He wasn't fine, and they both knew it.

Minato took point without being asked, already scanning the corridor mouth for anything the colony's earlier warnings hadn't caught.

The figure didn't move.

"You're coming," Kushina said. Not a question.

"I don't know if I can." The figure's voice had gone strange — smaller than its usual careful calm, closer to something admitting a fear it hadn't let itself name yet. "I've never left this corridor. Not once. Not since the first day I had a shape at all."

"You left it just now," Orochimaru said. "You ran the whole way in from the entrance."

"The entrance is still the corridor." The figure looked past them, down the length of Corridor Seven, toward the junction where the light changed and the wing's main passage began. "That's not the corridor anymore."

Effect: Attempting to model the figure's physical dependency on Corridor Seven specifically, as opposed to the wing generally. No prior data — this is the first time the question has been tested. Recommendation: proceed cautiously; structural integrity outside the corridor cannot be predicted from existing readings.

"Then we find out together," Kushina said, and held out her hand.

The figure looked at it for a long moment.

Then it reached back, and its fingers, when they closed around hers, felt thinner than they had all night — not less solid, exactly, but less certain, the way a held breath feels right before it runs out.

They crossed the threshold together.

The figure's ash-red half flickered the instant its foot cleared the corridor line — not vanishing, but thinning, the color running paler at the edges like ink meeting water. It made a sound that wasn't quite pain, teeth set, one hand gripping Kushina's hard enough that she didn't complain about it.

"Still here," it managed. "Still — here."

Kagetsu, half-carried between Kushina and Orochimaru, watched the figure hold itself together through sheer refusal to do anything else, and thought, distantly, that he understood that feeling better than he wanted to right now.

They made it twenty meters down the main wing passage before the figure's steps steadied. The paleness receded. Whatever it had spent to make the crossing, it didn't offer to explain, and nobody asked.

"First time for that too, then," Minato said quietly, mostly to fill the silence.

"First time for a lot of things tonight," the figure said. Some of its usual dry edge had come back, which Kagetsu chose to take as a good sign.

They didn't get much further before Minato's hand went up, a flat, silent stop.

Three shapes stood in the passage ahead, unmoving, positioned with the kind of stillness that wasn't waiting so much as it was already finished waiting.

Danzo stood at the center of them.

"Orochimaru." Danzo's visible eye moved past him, unhurried, and settled on the figure at Kushina's side. It didn't widen. It didn't need to. "You've been busy."

"This isn't the time," Orochimaru said.

"It's exactly the time. It's the only time I've been offered in five chapters." Danzo's gaze hadn't left the figure. "I confess I expected something considerably less coherent, given the reports."

Kushina's chains shifted at her sides, a low warning hum of chakra. "What reports."

"Root maintains its own eyes in this wing." Danzo said it the way other people mentioned the weather. "Has done, consistently, since your specimen breach in Ch. 322. I did tell you, Orochimaru, that my interest wouldn't simply go away because you refused me once."

Effect: Three stationary chakra signatures detected flanking the corridor exit, consistent with prior Root-pattern detections from Ch. 323. Confirmed present and active for an undetermined duration prior to the group's arrival. No new signatures beyond the three; count and positioning otherwise unchanged from historical baseline.

"Three signatures," Orochimaru said, half to himself, reading the same notification. "Same count as Ch. 323. You've had people posted here the entire time."

"I've had people posted near here the entire time," Danzo corrected. "There's a difference, and it matters more than you'd like it to. Tonight, for the first time, one of them saw something worth the risk of stepping closer."

His eye finally moved off the figure, settling instead on Kagetsu — pale, unsteady, held up by two people who clearly weren't going to let him fall even if the conversation demanded it.

"You look unwell," Danzo said. "I'm told that's becoming a pattern."

"Told by who," Kagetsu managed.

"By the people whose job it is to tell me things." Danzo's tone didn't change at all. "Madara named you once, publicly, in front of witnesses I don't fully control. That alone would justify Root's ongoing attention. What I've watched happen to this wing since then justifies considerably more than attention."

"You don't have jurisdiction here," Orochimaru said. "You never have."

"I have concern. Concern doesn't require jurisdiction, only patience, and I have more of that than anyone else standing in this corridor." Danzo's gaze swept once more across the group — Kagetsu, the figure, Kushina's still-humming chains — cataloguing, unhurried. "Hiruzen still doesn't know the shape of what's happening down here. I've confirmed that myself, more than once."

"That's not your business to confirm," Minato said.

"It became my business the moment it became a threat to the village he leads." For the first time, something sharpened in Danzo's voice — not anger, something colder and more deliberate. "I'm prepared to continue extending you the same patience I've shown since Ch. 319. But patience has terms. I want equal disclosure. Whatever briefing you eventually intend to give the Hokage, Root receives in full, at the same time, no partial version withheld for my benefit."

"And if we refuse," Kushina said.

"Then I stop extending patience, and Root stops watching from a comfortable distance." Danzo's visible eye moved back to the figure one final time, lingering there with an interest that read less like fear and more like appraisal. "I'd prefer not to reach that point. I doubt any of you would enjoy what it looks like from the other side."

Nobody answered right away.

The figure, still faintly unsteady from the crossing, spoke first — quiet, careful, addressed not to Danzo but to the rest of them.

"He's not wrong about the timeline," it said. "You have been running out of time to brief your Hokage since before I ever spoke a word in this corridor."

"That's not the same as agreeing with him," Orochimaru said.

"I didn't say it was." The figure's mismatched eyes flicked, briefly, toward Danzo, something guarded and old passing behind them. "I said he's not wrong. There's a difference, and it matters more than you'd like it to."

Danzo's mouth curved, just slightly — the closest thing to approval Kagetsu had seen from him all night.

"I like it already," he said. "It listens."

He raised one hand, unhurried, and the three flanking signatures shifted in unison — not advancing, not yet, but no longer merely standing still either.

"By morning," Danzo said. "Full disclosure, equal to Hiruzen's. Or I stop asking politely, and I start deciding for myself what belongs to Root and what doesn't."

His eye held on the figure as he said it.

"Starting," he added, "with whichever of you doesn't currently have a name on record."
