Danzo's hand didn't move again.
He didn't need it to.
Kagetsu felt Kushina's grip tighten on his arm before he understood why.
"They're not stopping," she said.
"He's not going to let them," Orochimaru said. "You could see that coming from the way he raised his hand. That wasn't a threat gesture. That was a countdown."
The three Root operatives came off their positions at once — no signal Kagetsu could see, no shift in Danzo's stance, just three shapes going from still to moving in the same half-second, closing the gap toward the group in perfect, practiced silence.
"Don't," Orochimaru said.
"I did warn you," Danzo said, "that patience had terms."
Kushina's chains were already off her wrists, already airborne, faster than thought — not aimed at Danzo, aimed at the space between his three operatives and the figure, a wall of gold-white chakra links snapping taut mid-air.
Two of the Root shinobi peeled around it without breaking stride.
The third didn't try. He simply stopped, weighing the chains for half a second, and adjusted his angle instead — coming at the figure from the side Kushina's wall didn't cover.

Effect: Three hostile signatures now actively closing on the group. Trajectory analysis: all three converging specifically on the split-faced figure's position, not on Kagetsu, Orochimaru, Kushina, or Minato. Confirms Danzo's stated intent was not rhetorical. Recommendation: the figure's structural stability outside Corridor Seven remains untested under combat stress — physical harm risk to it currently unquantifiable.
The figure went very still.
Not frozen. Deliberate. The stillness of something choosing not to run, when running was clearly still an option.
"Move," Minato snapped, already intercepting the nearest operative, three-pronged kunai flashing gold as he closed the distance in half a step. "Whatever you're doing, do it moving—"
"If I run," the figure said, quiet, almost apologetic, "they follow me instead of you. That's worse for everyone standing here who isn't me."
It didn't run.
Kagetsu tried to push off the wall he'd been leaning against and made it half a step before Kushina's free hand caught his chest, holding him back without looking away from the fight.
"You can barely stand," she said. "You're not helping by falling into it."
"I'm not going to just watch—"
"You are, for exactly as long as it takes the rest of us to handle three people." Her voice left no room in it. "You already survived tonight once. Let somebody else carry this part."
The first Root operative reached it a half-second later, hand already closing into a restraint seal shape — and passed straight through, the way a hand passes through smoke, momentum carrying him two full steps past before he could stop himself.
Danzo's visible eye narrowed, the first genuine reaction he'd shown all night.
"Interesting," he said.
"That's new information for you," the figure said, "and I'd rather it stayed that way. Call them back."
"I don't take orders from unregistered subjects." Danzo's voice hadn't changed at all, which was somehow worse than if it had sharpened. "Especially not ones that just demonstrated a defense I have no baseline for."
Orochimaru had moved without anyone noticing — already between Danzo and the fight itself, kunai reversed, blocking line of sight as much as line of attack.
"You're testing something on him," Orochimaru said. "That's what this is. You wanted the reaction, not the capture."
"I wanted both, if I could have them." Danzo didn't deny it. "I got one. I'll take it."
The second Root operative had circled around, coming at the figure from behind while the first recovered — and this time the strike connected.
Not on the figure.
On empty air where the figure had been a half-second before, ash-red and pale color already reforming three feet to the left, expression unreadable, watching its own would-be captor stumble through the space it had just occupied.
"You're not attacking me," the figure said, and there was something almost sad in how calmly it said it. "You're attacking wherever I was a half-second ago. That's not the same fight. You should stop before someone realizes that the hard way."

Effect: New capability observed — the figure is displacing itself by a fixed short interval, appearing to occupy a position slightly delayed relative to real-time attacks against it. Not teleportation in the conventional sense; more consistent with existing at a marginal temporal offset from its surroundings. First confirmed demonstration. Mechanism unknown. No data on limits, duration, or cost.
"A delay," Orochimaru said, reading it over Danzo's shoulder without asking permission. "You're not dodging. You're behind."
"I'd rather you didn't say that out loud either," the figure said, "but it's a little late for that particular secret."
Orochimaru's kunai hadn't lowered, but something in his stance had shifted — less a man defending a target, more a man doing arithmetic he didn't like the answer to. He'd spent five chapters treating the figure as a known quantity, guarded but predictable, contained by whatever rules governed Corridor Seven. Watching it dodge attacks that hadn't landed yet was a different problem entirely, and he looked like he knew it.
Danzo's eye had gone from narrowed to something closer to fascinated.
"A temporal offset," he said, testing the words like he was already filing them somewhere permanent. "That's not something Root has catalogued. That's not something I've seen catalogued anywhere."
"Then maybe let it stay uncatalogued," Kagetsu said. His voice came out rougher than he wanted, still hoarse from the mark, but steady enough to be heard. "You've got what you wanted. You know it's real. You know it's dangerous. Isn't that enough for tonight?"
"No." Danzo said it plainly, without cruelty, which somehow made it land harder. "It's enough to confirm the question is worth asking again. It is not enough to stop asking it."
He raised one hand, and the third operative — the one who'd gone wide around Kushina's chains — finally reached striking range, no longer aiming for a capture hold.
Aiming, instead, for something narrower and faster: a single point on the figure's chest, the kind of strike meant to disrupt a chakra network rather than restrain a body.
Kushina's second chain-throw came a half-beat too late to intercept, close enough that Kagetsu heard the sound it made snapping shut on nothing.
The figure's offset bought it distance. Not enough.
The strike clipped its shoulder instead of its center, and where it landed, the ash-red half of the figure's face didn't flicker like it had at the corridor threshold.
It cracked.
Hairline, spreading slow from the point of impact, the way a stressed pane of glass finds its first fault line before the rest follows.
The figure staggered, one hand flying up to its own face on reflex, and for the first time all night it looked less like something guarded and unreadable and more like something that had just discovered, in front of an audience, exactly how much it could actually survive.
"That," it said, voice thin, "was not supposed to be possible outside the corridor."
Kushina reached it first, one hand hovering near the crack without touching it, like touching it might make things worse. "Can you fix that? Can we fix that?"
"I don't know." The figure's usual careful calm had thinned to almost nothing. "I've never had to find out."
Orochimaru's kunai finally lowered, not from any easing of the situation, but because he'd clearly decided a blade wasn't the tool this particular problem needed. "Danzo. Whatever you were trying to prove, you've proven it. Call the rest of this off."
Danzo's eye tracked the crack with open, unhidden interest, the fascination of a man watching a very expensive question answer itself for free.
"Then it seems," he said, "we've both learned something new tonight."
He didn't call the third operative back.
The man adjusted his stance instead, weight shifting forward, already reading the same fault line Danzo was — and this time aiming for it directly.
"Orochimaru." The figure's voice had dropped to almost nothing, all the earlier dry composure gone out of it. "If that lands again in the same place, I don't know what happens. I've genuinely never had to know."
Orochimaru moved before he'd finished deciding to, putting himself bodily between the third operative and the figure's cracked shoulder, kunai up, expression flat in the specific way Kagetsu had learned meant he'd already stopped weighing options.
"Then it doesn't land," Orochimaru said.
Danzo watched the interception happen without any visible urgency at all, the way a man watches a piece move exactly where he expected it to.
"You'll defend an unregistered entity of unknown origin," he said, "with your own body, five minutes after learning it can shatter. That tells me something too, Orochimaru. I hope you understand that."
"It tells you I don't like being tested," Orochimaru said. "Nothing more complicated than that."
"I rarely find things that simple." Danzo's gaze moved past him again, back to the crack, to the way the figure held its shoulder like it wasn't entirely certain the rest of it would stay put if it let go.
He raised one hand.
Not to call the operative off.
The third Root shinobi's stance shifted lower, weight settling, the particular readiness of someone about to close the last few feet at full speed rather than testing distance again.
"Danzo." Orochimaru's voice had gone very quiet, very level — the tone Kagetsu had only heard him use twice before, both times right before something in the room broke. "Think very carefully about your next order."
"I have," Danzo said. "I've had five chapters to think about it."
His hand came down.
