Kazuki thought, 'If I save a little more, I could buy a house and move out of that shithole of an apartment. But wait.'
Kazuki suddenly realized, 'The Uchiha massacre is only a couple of years away. If I buy a house outside the compound now, I might be able to survive the massacre more easily since I won't be in the immediate target zone. But if I do that, it would be extremely hard for me to keep an eye on the massacre and Uchiha's movements.'
He clenched his fists slightly. 'I have become strong. But I'm still not strong enough to defeat Itachi or Obito.'
He let out a long sigh. 'I guess I'll decide to stay in my shithole of an apartment for a little while longer. I guess I should focus on fuinjutsu now that I don't have to worry about money.'
Inside the Hokage's office, Kazuki, Yuki, and Ryuma bowed respectfully, taking their prize money before heading toward the door.
Akari, however, didn't follow them out. She stood firmly in front of the Hokage's desk.
"You three go ahead," Akari said. "I need to deliver the detailed mission report to Lord Hokage."
As the genin nodded and stepped out of the room, Akari's expression turned dead serious. She handed a sealed scroll to Hiruzen. "Lord Hokage, there was a major problem during the second round of the exams. I strongly hope you look into it and deal with the root of the issue."
Hiruzen's eyes narrowed slightly as he took the scroll, a little confused.
Meanwhile, Kazuki closed the door to the office and turned to walk down the hallway with Yuki and Ryuma.
Suddenly, a figure appeared from around the corner, walking toward the Hokage's office.
Kazuki's eyes widened, and he instantly felt chills all over his body.
It was an older man with bandages wrapping his right eye and right arm, wearing a dark kimono. Shimura Danzo.
As they crossed paths in the hallway, Danzo paused for a fraction of a second. His single visible eye slowly shifted to lock onto Kazuki. It was a cold, empty, and terrifying stare that felt like it was piercing right through Kazuki's soul.
Kazuki froze completely, his breath caught in his throat. He couldn't move a single muscle until Danzo finally broke eye contact and entered the Hokage's office, closing the door behind him.
"Kazuki?" Yuki asked, waving a hand in front of his face. "What happened? You suddenly stopped walking."
"Yeah, you look like you just saw a ghost," Ryuma added.
Kazuki snapped out of his daze and forced a small, unconvincing smile. "It's nothing. I'm just a little tired from the journey."
Yuki gave him a slightly suspicious look but nodded. "Alright. Make sure you get some rest."
They parted ways, and Kazuki headed straight back to the Uchiha compound.
When Kazuki finally entered his apartment, he coughed and waved his hand in front of his face. The whole place was incredibly dusty because it had not been cleaned in quite a while. He had been so busy with the month-long training and the trip to Iwagakure that the apartment had been completely neglected.
"Man, what a mess," Kazuki muttered.
He quickly made two shadow clones. While the clones grabbed a broom and a wet cloth to start scrubbing the floors and dusting the shelves, Kazuki went into the bathroom.
He filled the tub with warm water and sank into it, letting out a long groan of relief. He took his time taking a bath, letting the hot water soothe his aching muscles and the fatigue from the Chunin Exams. By the time he got out and dried off, his clones had dispelled, leaving the apartment looking relatively clean.
Suddenly, Kazuki heard a sharp knock on his door.
He frowned. 'Who could that be? Nobody ever visits me here.'
He opened the door and was surprised to see the same Uchiha shinobi who used to come around every month to give him his meager allowance. The man had the exact same displeased, scowling look on his face like before.
The shinobi looked Kazuki up and down and said coldly, "You've been summoned by the clan head. Come with me."
Kazuki was a bit surprised. 'The clan head? He wants to see me?'
He quickly analyzed the situation. 'He must have heard the news that I was the runner-up in the Chunin Exams. I guess I'm finally worth his time now.'
Kazuki nodded calmly. "I can go immediately."
They both left the apartment and walked through the Uchiha compound in silence. The atmosphere in the compound always felt tense and isolated from the rest of the village, a feeling Kazuki was far too familiar with.
After a little while, they reached the clan head's office.
The shinobi knocked firmly on the wooden door.
"Enter," Fugaku's stern voice came from inside.
The shinobi slid the door open, stepped inside just enough to bow deeply, and then left, sliding the door shut behind him. This left Fugaku and Kazuki completely alone in the office.
Fugaku was seated formally on a cushion behind a low wooden desk, his arms crossed over his chest. His piercing, dark eyes studied Kazuki intensely.
Kazuki stepped forward and bowed respectfully. "Did you call me, Lord Fugaku?"
Fugaku nodded slowly. "I did. Word has reached me of your performance in Iwagakure. Surviving the second round, defeating the Tsuchikage's granddaughter, and securing the runner-up position in a foreign village. It is an impressive achievement for someone of your age."
Kazuki kept his expression neutral. "Thank you, Lord Fugaku. I only did my duty as a shinobi of the Leaf."
Fugaku's eyes narrowed slightly. He leaned forward. "However, there is another matter I wish to discuss. What are your relations with the Senju clan?"
Kazuki felt his heart skip a beat, but his face didn't show it.
Fugaku continued, his voice cold. "Many people have seen you going in and out of the Senju clan head's house over the past few years. You have been observed spending a suspicious amount of time in their compound."
Kazuki thought, 'I knew I couldn't hide it forever. The Uchiha police force has eyes everywhere. I just need to play it cool.'
Kazuki looked directly at Fugaku and replied steadily, "It is because the clan head's daughter, Yuki Senju, is on my genin team. We have also been close friends since our time together in the academy. I visit her to hang out or discuss team training."
Fugaku stared at him for a long, silent moment, trying to read any deception in the young boy's eyes.
"Is that all?" Fugaku asked sharply. "Do you have any other relations with the clan or its leadership?"
"No, Lord Fugaku," Kazuki refused firmly. "It is strictly a friendship with my teammate."
Fugaku leaned back, seeming to accept the answer or at least deciding not to press the issue further for now.
"Very well," Fugaku said, his tone shifting from an interrogator to that of a clan leader. "You have proven that despite your mixed heritage, the blood of the Uchiha runs strong within you. You have awakened the Sharingan and brought honor to the clan's name on an international stage."
Fugaku uncrossed his arms and placed his hands on the desk.
"From this day forward, you will be granted the full perks of the Uchiha Clan," Fugaku offered. "You will be given access to our specialized training areas, which have equipment far superior to the academy's. You may use special ninja tools from the clan armory."
Fugaku paused, his gaze hardening into something much heavier. "And you will be granted access to the Uchiha clan meetings from now on."
Kazuki's eyes widened slightly.
He thought, 'The clan meetings? This sounds interesting.'
