Chapter 105: Chapter 104: The Cost of Recklessness

"You’re going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view."

— Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

--

"If you had a plan to begin with, it would have been nice to hear it."

"But I don’t think Hikari’s son would plan anything at all," Mikoto said gently, "and that is exactly what worries me."

Otis said, "I’m sorry that I didn’t inform you in advance... but it worked anyway."

Sayuri whispered from the doorway, "That was the wrong thing to say."

Shisui nodded very seriously. "Extremely wrong."

Mikoto took another step forward. She smiled.

It was a very calm smile.

Too calm.

"Well," she said, "let’s try something."

Otis’s eyes narrowed slightly.

"Let’s see what kind of thinking went into that plan."

"How about," Mikoto continued, the smile still not leaving her face, "a spar?"

Behind him, Sayuri straightened instantly.

"Ohhh."

Shisui’s grin widened.

Sasuke leaned forward, interested.

Hinata’s eyes widened.

Mikoto’s smile didn’t change.

But her eyes did.

Red light flared to life.

The Sharingan appeared.

One tomoe.

Then two.

Then three.

Otis felt the shift immediately.

The air grew heavier.

Then the pattern changed again

The tomoe twisted inward, reforming into the intricate design of the Mangekyō Sharingan.

Otis’s entire body reacted on instinct.

The hairs on his arms rose.

A warning screamed through every nerve in his body.

That smile on Mikoto’s face... It no longer looked like a smile.

Mikoto bent her knees slightly, lowering her center of gravity.

"Show me what you’ve got, Otis," she said calmly.

One moment she was standing still in front of Otis. The next moment, she was already in front of him.

And in that instant, Otis knew.

She was completely serious

Bam

Otis barely raised his hand in time, but it wasn’t enough. Her punch crashed into his guard.

The force behind it sent him flying across the yard.

THUD

Otis skidded across the dirt, carving a shallow trench before stopping.

At the doorway

"..." Sayuri

"..." Hinata

"Well, we all saw that coming," Shisui said, folding his arms as he watched closely.

Hinata’s hands tightened in her lap. "He... didn’t even see that."

Sasuke’s eyes were locked on the field.

Otis pushed himself up, rolling his shoulder. His arm was already numb.

"...That hurt," he muttered.

His muscles tensed.

Chakra surged through his body, reinforcing his muscles. The air around him shifted.

He stepped forward, lowering his stance.

Ready now.

Mikoto smiled faintly.

"That’s better."

Otis didn’t respond.

The ground beneath his feet cracked as he launched himself toward her.

Mikoto’s eyes locked onto him, her Mangekyō spinning.

"But," she said

Otis reached her with explosive speed, twisting his body and driving a kick toward her ribs.

It passed straight through.

Her body was replaced by a wooden log.

She had used the Substitution Jutsu, and the log shattered as it was launched sideways by the force of his strike.

From behind, her hand came down toward his shoulder in a sharp chop.

CRACK

Pain shot through his arm as he was driven downward, one knee slamming into the ground.

"You’re still too weak," Mikoto said calmly from behind him.

Otis clenched his teeth and rolled away just as her next strike hit where his head had been.

Chakra flowed from his body into the earth.

The ground beneath Mikoto’s feet shifted just enough to throw off her balance.

Otis came up swinging, his fist cutting through the air in a clean, heavy hook.

Mikoto’s balance was disturbed, but she still tilted her head.

The punch missed by a hair.

Otis’s eyes narrowed. That was a very precise dodge, even with her footing disturbed.

She knew where it would be before my punch even landed...

"Your form is good," she continued, stepping around him like she had all the time in the world. "Maybe because of your training under Guy."

Another strike.

This time to his ribs.

Otis gritted his teeth as he blocked the heavy punch.

"But you are still far behind me," Mikoto said calmly. "Well... I learned some fighting from Tsunade."

She didn’t rush.

And that was the worst part.

Every hit landed cleanly, each one striking the exact point that broke his guard.

Otis swung a counter as the earth shifted beneath her feet, trying to catch her off guard.

Mikoto stepped into his space suddenly.

The counter missed by inches.

"How—"

"My right eye," she said, stepping inside his guard and striking his chest, "enhances my movement speed."

Otis staggered back.

"And my left..." she added, her gaze narrowing slightly, "slows the perception of the world around me."

Otis froze for a fraction of a second.

"...That’s some broken ability."

Sayuri smirked from the doorway.

"Told you."

Hinata watched, tense.

"...She can see everything..."

Shisui nodded.

"And move before it even happens."

Otis wiped blood from his lip.

"...Got it."

Earth chakra surged.

It spread from Otis’s feet like a pulse. Everything went silent for a fraction of a second...

Then the ground erupted.

Spikes tore upward in all directions, jagged and fast, turning the training yard into a field of stone fangs.

Hinata’s eyes widened. "That’s... everywhere..."

Mikoto moved through them like she was walking through falling leaves.

She stepped, turned, shifted. Each spike missed her by inches, as if the ground itself had told her where not to stand.

She looked almost... playful.

Sayuri leaned forward slightly. "She’s not even trying yet..."

Otis narrowed his eyes.

While dodging, Mikoto casually weaved hand signs.

"Fire Release: Fire Dragon Flame Bullet."

(Pic)

Flames burst forward, spiraling into a roaring dragon that tore across the yard toward Otis.

He moved instantly, twisting his body aside as the fire roared past him, heat scraping across his skin.

The moment the flames cleared

The ground beneath Mikoto hollowed.

A massive opening split beneath her feet.

A giant worm, formed from compressed stone and chakra, surged upward, its jaws opening wide to swallow her whole.

"That’s new," Shisui murmured.

Hinata gasped. "From below...!"

But Mikoto didn’t retreat.

She jumped forward.

Straight toward Otis.

Closing the distance instantly.

She reached him

And her hand passed through his body.

Puff

White smoke burst out.

"A clone," Shisui muttered.

Sayuri blinked. "When did he make it?"
