Kane leaned one shoulder against the stone wall, arms loosely crossed.

The midday heat still clung to the yard, carrying the scent of dust, sweat, and the residual strain of the morning drills.

Seraphine stood a pace away, silver hair bound high, the short training leather marked with the same dust that covered every other woman who had finished the first day of ranking.

She studied him for a long moment before she spoke.

"Do you know how influential she is?"

Kane’s gaze drifted briefly toward the ranking board where Jenna’s name sat at the top, then returned to Seraphine.

"Tell me."

"Jenna now holds the most respectable position in the cavalry," Seraphine said. Her voice stayed even, measured.

"To you she might be simply a warrior. For Milfheim she’s a rising star. Every woman in the lower ranks wants to be like her. She is young enough to still have ambition and skilled enough that the captains already listen when she speaks. That combination is rare here. And dangerous."

Kane gave a low sound of acknowledgment.

"Mm."

Seraphine’s silver eyes narrowed slightly.

"You don’t plan on fucking her?"

Kane’s mouth curved at the directness.

"I don’t mind. But Milfheim warriors tend to be tight. Like you."

Seraphine laughed, short, genuine, the sound cutting through the quieter noise of the emptying yard.

She shook her head once, the bound silver hair shifting against her neck.

"We met while we were fighting. I’m a first blade. Duty comes first."

"I know," Kane said. "That’s why taking you slowly made it worth it."

The laughter faded, but the faint curve of her mouth remained.

She stepped half a pace closer, close enough that the heat of her body reached him.

"Careful now, warlord. Too many women will become your downfall."

Kane held her gaze without looking away.

"I don’t plan on keeping everyone I fuck by my side. Until they are as useful as you."

Seraphine’s expression softened into a real smile this time, small, controlled, but real.

She glanced once toward the high gallery where the Empress had stood earlier, then back to him.

"What about the beastmen?"

"We go next week."

"He won’t be easy."

"I don’t expect him to be." Kane shifted his weight against the wall.

"Anything you know of him?"

Seraphine was quiet for a moment, organizing what she was willing to give.

In the game, the Beastworld had been a hidden region.

Kane had only ever met the few who wandered out of it or were dragged into the larger war.

The deeper maps, the true power structure, the grounds- those had stayed locked behind walls of fog and restricted quests.

He had never walked those forests in person. He had only read the aftermath reports.

Seraphine spoke carefully.

"Grathak has breeding grounds where he kidnaps elves and humans. He keeps them in the deep forest, under the watch of a mythical creature that acts as guardian. The creature alone is enough to turn most armies back. Grathak himself is a warlord who can fight anyone on the continent without needing the guardian’s help. He does not negotiate. He takes what he wants and breeds what he keeps."

Kane listened without interruption.

When she finished, he asked the only question that mattered.

"You’ve seen me fighting. Would I lose?"

Seraphine did not answer immediately. She looked at him, really looked, measuring the red-haired man who had walked into an empire of women, ranked their warriors in a single morning, and turned down the rising star of their cavalry without raising his voice.

She knew how he killed Morvak inside his empire.

Her silver eyes moved over the line of his shoulders, the easy way he carried the hammer, the absolute lack of doubt in his posture.

Finally she spoke.

"50/50."

Kane smiled.

The expression was slow and sharp, the same one he wore when a fight turned interesting.

"Good enough."

Seraphine exhaled through her nose, something between amusement and resignation.

"You hear a fifty percent chance of dying and call it good enough. That’s why Thora stays close, and Misha watches you the way she does."

"They know what they signed up for."

"They do. Jenna does not. Not yet."

Seraphine’s voice dropped a fraction.

"If you take her, do it after the ranking ends and do it on your terms. Not hers. She will try to turn the night into leverage. She already tried today."

Kane pushed off the wall.

"I know. That is why the ranking still has two days."

Seraphine fell into step beside him as he started toward the keep. The yard had mostly emptied. A few remaining pairs still drilled under Kessa’s eye, but the pressure of the morning had eased into the slower rhythm of afternoon maintenance.

High above, the gallery stood empty now. Slovia had already withdrawn.

"Thora and Misha will want the full report," Seraphine said.

"They will get it."

"Including the kiss?"

"Especially the kiss."

Seraphine’s mouth twitched.

"Thora will not like it."

"Thora already knows the difference between a woman who tries to climb and a woman who already belongs. She will not like it. She will also not be surprised."

They walked in silence for a stretch of corridor. The stone underfoot was cooler than the yard, the light softer.

Seraphine spoke again only when they reached the junction that led toward the western wing.

"Grathak will test more than your strength," she said.

"He will test whether you can hold what you have already claimed while you try to take more. The breeding grounds are not just for elves and humans. He has taken beastwomen who refused him. He has taken warriors who thought they were strong enough to walk into his forest and walk out again. None of them did."

Kane stopped at the junction and turned to face her fully.

"Then we go prepared. And we do not go alone."

Seraphine met his eyes.

"I will be there."

"I know."

The system window flickered at the edge of his vision, quiet and persistent.

[New Regional Intel Unlocked: Grathak of the Beastworld]

[Threat Assessment: Extreme]

Kane closed the window with a thought. Seraphine watched the brief, distant focus in his eyes and said nothing.

"Go to them," she said.

"Tell Thora and Misha what happened in the gap between the racks. Tell them about Jenna’s hand on your cock and the way she offered loyalty like it was a bargaining chip. Then decide how hard you want the next two days of ranking to be."

Kane nodded once.

"And you?"

"I will keep ranking honest. And I will make sure Jenna understands that first place on a board is not the same as first place in your bed."

She turned and walked back toward the yard without waiting for a reply.

Kane watched her go, the steady stride of a first blade who had already chosen her place, then continued toward the western wing alone.
