Kane walked into the private study and closed the door behind him.
Misha sat cross-legged on the wide bed, eyes half-closed, lips moving in the low, rhythmic cadence of a healing chant she had learned from Griselda.
The glow of magic still clung to her fingertips. Thora sat on the low bench near the window, a whetstone whispering steadily along the edge of a short blade.
Neither of them looked up at first.
Kane opened his mouth.
Both women raised a hand at the same time.
Thora spoke first, voice dry.
"We know."
Misha’s eyes opened. The chant faded.
"And at this point, we don’t even care. You already have a bigger group of women. I know you won’t take them all, but you’ll give them the satisfaction of tasting you."
Kane stopped where he stood. Then he laughed, genuine, the sound rolling through the quiet room.
He crossed the floor, dropped onto the bed beside Misha, and pulled Thora over by the wrist until she sat on his other side.
The whetstone and blade were set aside without comment.
"Once the war ends," he said, "I will only belong to you. Solely."
Thora turned her head and looked at him for a long moment. The corner of her mouth lifted.
"You say that now."
"I mean it now."
Misha shifted closer, resting her cheek against his shoulder.
"The ranking will finish in two days. Jenna will still be first or second. She already put her hands on you once. She will try again."
"I turned her down."
"You turned her down today," Thora corrected.
"Tomorrow is another day. And the day after that she will have the ranking as proof that she earned the right to ask."
Kane’s arm settled around both of them.
"She can ask. Asking is not the same as receiving."
Misha’s fingers traced a slow line along the inside of his forearm.
"And if she ranks high enough that refusing her becomes a political problem with the cavalry?"
"Then I will handle the politics. The same way I handled the council. The same way I will handle Grathak next week."
Thora’s eyes narrowed slightly at the name.
"The beastman."
"Yes."
"Seraphine told you about him."
"She did."
Misha lifted her head.
"What did she say?"
Kane gave them the short version: breeding grounds, kidnapped elves and humans, the mythical guardian in the deep forest, and Grathak himself, a warlord who did not negotiate.
He left out the fifty-fifty assessment. Some things did not need to be spoken aloud before sleep.
Thora was quiet for a while after he finished. Then she reached up, caught the back of his neck, and pulled him down into a slow, thorough kiss.
When she released him, Misha took her place without hesitation, her mouth softer but no less certain.
Kane tasted both of them, steel and stone from Thora, clean water and residual magic from Misha, and felt the familiar, grounding weight of the claims he already held.
"Sleep," Thora said against his lips.
"The ranking starts again at dawn. You will need to be sharp if you intend to keep turning women down in public."
Misha settled against his right side, hair spilling across his chest.
Thora took the left, one arm thrown over his waist with the same possessive weight she always used.
Kane stared at the ceiling beams for a few breaths longer, then closed his eyes.
The keep around them settled into night.
Far to the east, beyond the last mapped borders of the five empires, the forest of Berakuman rose like a second sky.
The trees were older than any human kingdom, their trunks wider than siege towers, their canopies so dense that daylight became a green twilight even at noon. In the heart of that forest stood an empire larger than Milfheim, built of living wood, black stone, and the bones of things that had once tried to conquer it.
Beasts moved through the lower paths in disciplined packs, wolves the size of horses, striped cats that walked on two legs when they chose, and heavier shapes that never fully left the shadows.
At the center of the great hall, Grathak sat on a throne carved from the heartwood of a tree that had been dead for three centuries.
He was ten feet tall. His body looked like it had been built for war and then used without rest, thick muscle layered over a frame that could break gates, dark fur across shoulders and arms, a bear’s heavy face marked by old scars.
One massive hand rested on the arm of the throne. The other gripped the hip of the elven woman currently riding him.
She was long-haired, pale, and trembling. Her hands braced against his chest for balance while she rose and fell on the thick length of him.
Every downward stroke forced a broken sound from her throat.
Grathak watched her with flat, predatory patience. When she began to falter, he leaned forward, opened his mouth, and bit down hard on the junction of her neck and shoulder.
The elf cried out. Her back arched. Grathak’s hips drove upward in a brutal rhythm that lifted her off the throne with every thrust.
The wet sound of it filled the hall. He did not slow. He fucked her through the pain of the bite until her eyes rolled back and her body locked tight around him.
Only then did he finish, deep, heavy pulses that flooded her while she shook and gasped.
When he was done, he lifted her off his cock and set her on her feet.
She swayed. Seed ran down the inside of one thigh. She did not speak. She stood there, breathing hard, waiting to be dismissed.
Grathak leaned back against the throne.
"The devils..." he whispered.
A second set of footsteps approached from the side hall.
A beastwoman stepped into the light, taller than most humans, marked with the same dark fur along her arms and the sides of her face, eyes the color of old amber.
She carried no weapon.
She did not need one.
The air around her carried the quiet weight of someone who saw further than the present moment.
Grathak’s sister.
She stopped a respectful distance from the throne and glanced once at the trembling elf.
"You are finished with her?"
"For now."
The fortune-teller dismissed the elf with a small motion of her hand. The woman left on unsteady legs, one hand pressed to the bleeding bite on her shoulder.
When the hall was quiet again, the sister spoke.
"We might get visitors soon."
