Grathak’s bear face turned toward her. The heavy brow ridges shifted.
"Friendly?"
"No."
A smile spread across his mouth, showing thick canines.
"Then let them."
His sister stepped closer, folding her arms.
"They will not come as raiders. Not at first. One of them already carries the scent of multiple claims. He is binding women the way you bind breeding stock, but with different rules. He’s also the reason the southern borders have started to whisper about movement in the deep places."
Grathak’s claws flexed once against the wood of the throne.
"Devils."
"The early signs are there. The same signs that appeared the last time the sky cracked. This new warlord is trying to unite the fractured pieces before it happens. He will reach the Beastworld eventually. He will have to."
"And when he does?"
"He will try to speak first. He prefers alliances when he can force them. When he cannot, he takes what he needs and leaves the rest broken."
Grathak rumbled low in his chest, a sound that was almost a laugh.
"He can try. The guardian still sleeps in the deep grove. The breeding grounds are full. My packs are hungry. If he walks into my forest believing he can negotiate, he will learn the same lesson every elf and human before him learned."
His sister’s amber eyes remained steady.
"This one’s different. He already took over Menual. He has walked into an empire ruled only by women and left with their cooperation and a portion of their warriors. He ranks them like livestock and offers nights in his bed as prizes. The ones who accept become more dangerous afterward. The ones who refuse still improve because they are forced to."
Grathak considered that in silence. Then he rose from the throne. Ten feet of scarred muscle and dark fur unfolded.
The elf’s scent still clung to him, sweat, blood, and the heavy musk of recent sex.
"Then we prepare the outer paths," he said.
"Let the packs know visitors may come. If they are friendly, they can speak. If they are not..."
He smiled again, slow and sharp.
"Then the breeding grounds will have new stock, and the guardian will have fresh bones."
His sister inclined her head.
"I will read the bones again at moonrise. The pattern is still shifting. Whatever is coming, it is not only the warlord."
Grathak walked past her toward the open arch that led into the deeper forest. The night air moved through the hall, carrying the scent of loam, blood, and the distant calls of the packs.
"Let them come," he repeated, quieter this time.
"I have not had a proper fight in too long. And if the devils are truly waking, I will need new strength before the sky breaks."
Grathak closed the distance in two long strides.
Marisa didn’t step back.
She was tall for a woman of any race, but still a full head shorter than her brother.
Where his body was filled with bear’s bulk and dark fur, hers was leaner, cleaner, smooth skin the color of warm sand, long black hair that fell past her waist in a thick, unbroken fall, and amber eyes that always seemed to be looking at something further away than the room she stood in.
The only mark of the Beastworld on her was a faint pattern of darker stripes along her collarbones and the outer curves of her hips, visible where the light wrap of her robe left them bare.
Grathak lowered his head and sniffed along the side of her neck, slow and deliberate. The heavy musk of him, sex, blood, and the forest wrapped around her.
"Mate with me, sister," he said in a rumble that vibrated in his chest.
"You are the only one I ever need in this world."
He licked a slow stripe up the side of her throat, tasting salt and the quiet scent that was only hers.
Marisa’s eyes moved down, briefly, to the length of him still half-hard and glistening from the elf he had just finished with.
Then she looked back up into his scarred bear face.
"...Give me time, brother."
Grathak held her gaze for a long moment. Then he nodded once, the motion heavy.
Marisa turned without another word and walked from the hall, long black hair swaying against the small of her back.
She didn’t look at the empty throne or the lingering scent of the elf.
Her private chambers sat higher in the living-wood structure, open on one side to the deep canopy.
She closed the woven screen behind her, let the robe fall, and sat cross-legged on the low platform that served as both bed and scrying space.
Amber eyes closed.
The visions came the way they always did, sudden, sharp, without permission.
A man.
Not as tall as Grathak, but firm, built for war rather than pure mass.
Red hair the color of fresh blood in sunlight. He moved through a training yard that smelled of dust and women, an axe in his hands that carried a faint, impossible glow, as if the metal itself remembered the hands of gods.
Around him ranked warriors of an empire that had never trusted men, and yet they listened when he spoke.
He fought with the kind of certainty that came from having already seen the end of the board.
Marisa’s breath slowed.
He wasn’t going to be easy.
The vision shifted, red hair again, this time between two women in a private room, one dark-haired and possessive, one golden-eyed and quieter.
Then the forest. Her forest. The outer paths. The guardian stirring in its sleep.
Marisa opened her eyes.
"Not easy at all," she murmured to the empty room.
She rose, wrapped the robe around herself again, and went to the open side of the chamber to watch the night packs move through the lower paths.
Morning in Milfheim arrived clear and cold.
Kane stood on the platform at the edge of the training yard and watched the ranks form.
The second day of ranking had begun before the sun fully cleared the eastern walls.
Kessa’s voice carried across the packed dirt without effort, calling pairs, correcting stances, driving the pace higher than the day before.
Tiger stripes stood out sharply against her skin in the early light.
Jenna took her place at the front of the first rotation without a word. She did not look at Kane. She did not try to catch his eye or step into his path. She fought clean, aggressive, and relentless.
Every exchange ended with her opponent on the ground or yielding. Vessa and Rina matched her as best they could, but the gap from the first day remained.
