Kessa’s voice stayed dangerously sweet.
"Mother. If you take one more step toward him, I’m going to drag you into the training yard and remind you which of us still ranks higher in a real fight."
Lira finally stopped advancing, though the heat scent rolling off her remained thick and distracting.
Razan exhaled through his nose like a man who had dealt with this exact problem too many times.
"Both of you. Inside. Now. The guest house is the rear building. Meals at dusk. Human, if my mate shows up at your door after dark, you will send her back. Clear?"
Kane nodded once.
"Clear."
They were shown to a solid single-room guest house at the back of the compound.
Kessa claimed the wider bed immediately, still bristling.
Griselda took the corner nearest the door. Kane set Mjoldr within reach and left the shutters half-open so he could watch the compound and the street beyond.
By mid-morning the settlement was fully awake.
Kane walked the outer packs with Kessa at his side and Griselda a step behind.
The difference from any human or elven city was immediate and constant.
There were no quiet districts.
Strength was displayed openly and often. Males tested each other in the middle of pathways.
Females watched with frank interest and sometimes stepped in to claim the winner before the loser had even stood up.
Blood on the packed earth was common enough that no one bothered to clean it until it dried.
Kessa kept a running explanation as they moved.
"Strength is the only law that never changes," she said, ears tracking every nearby challenge.
"Bloodline and reputation matter, but only as long as you can still back them up. Lose too many fights and your name becomes a joke. Win enough and even a low-born can force higher packs to negotiate."
They stopped at the edge of a wide-open circle where two heavy males were already circling each other.
A lean female with fox markings stood between them, arms crossed, looking bored and irritated in equal measure.
The larger of the two males, boar-tusked and broad, lunged first. The fight was short and ugly.
Claws, teeth, a heavy takedown that left the smaller male stunned on his back.
The winner did not wait for applause or formal words.
He grabbed the fox-marked female by the waist, pushed her face-down against a low crate, and mounted her right there in the open circle while the crowd watched and commented.
The female did not resist.
She braced herself, ears flat, and took it with the same practical acceptance she might have given any other public resolution.
When the male finished, he pulled out, marked her shoulder with a bite that did not break skin, and walked off.
The female straightened her wrap, spat once into the dirt, and left in the opposite direction without looking at either male again.
Kane watched the entire sequence in silence.
"That was..."
Kessa glanced at him.
"That is how most disputes over a willing female end here. Fast. Public. No long arguments. The winner takes what was being fought over, and everyone moves on. If she had refused, it would have been different. Refusal is respected if you can enforce it. She didn’t refuse."
"And if the loser tries again later?"
"Then they fight again. Or the female chooses a stronger protector. Or someone higher-ranked decides the whole thing is annoying and ends both of them. Hierarchy keeps the worst of it from spreading."
They kept walking.
Griselda drew more attention than Kane or even Kessa.
Her dark wings, pale skin, and the clean scent that did not belong to any local pack made her a constant target for stares.
The first attempt came near the river stalls, a tall jackal-marked male who stepped into her path with a slow smile and an open invitation to "see the upper terraces" for the afternoon.
Kane moved before Griselda had to answer.
One hard look and a slight shift of Mjoldr on his shoulder was enough. The jackal male raised both hands and stepped aside, though his eyes lingered.
The second attempt was less polite.
A group of three younger males from a mid-tier pack blocked the narrow path between two workshops.
The leader, scarred across the muzzle, looked Griselda up and down with open hunger and spoke to Kane as if the fallen angel were property already under discussion.
"Human. The winged one doesn’t carry a claim scent strong enough. We’re offering a fair trade. One night. We return her after. No permanent marks."
Kessa’s ears went flat.
Griselda’s expression did not change, but one wing shifted slightly, ready.
Kane stepped forward until he was inside the leader’s space.
"She’s not for trade. Fuck off."
The scarred male held the stare for a long moment, testing.
Whatever he saw in Kane’s eyes made him reconsider.
He clicked his tongue once, jerked his head at the other two, and the group melted back into the flow of the street.
No blood. No formal challenge. Just a clear recognition that pushing further would cost more than it was worth.
Kessa waited until they were past the workshops before she spoke again.
"You’re getting better at the short version. Most outsiders either overreact and start a blood feud or underreact and get tested all day."
"I don’t have the patience for either."
They spent the rest of the afternoon moving through different circles of the outer packs, watching food distribution, open sparring, the way higher-ranked females moved with small groups of protectors while lower ones walked alone and accepted the risks that came with it.
Kane asked few questions.
He mostly watched.
The system of casual violence and casual sex was not chaos. It was a crude, effective way of keeping ambition and heat from boiling over into constant open war.
By the time the light began to fade, they returned to the family compound.
Evening meal was held in the main house around a long, low table.
Razan sat at the head. Lira sat to his right, still carrying a noticeable edge of heat but more controlled than that morning.
Kessa took the place beside Kane.
Griselda remained slightly apart, as she preferred.
Razan wasted no time.
"You walked my streets today. What did you see?"
