The male lunged first, fast, aggressive, clearly used to overwhelming opponents with size and momentum.

Kane stepped inside the reach, caught the incoming wrist, and redirected the force.

A brutal sequence followed: an elbow to the ribs that drove the air out of the male's lungs, a knee to the thigh that buckled the leg, and a clean throw that put the challenger on his back hard enough to raise dust from the packed earth.

Kane followed him down just long enough to pin one arm and lock a forearm across the male's throat, not crushing, but firm enough to make the point unmistakable.

He held the position for three full heartbeats while the street watched in silence, then released him and stood.

The wolf-marked male stayed on the ground, coughing, eyes wide with genuine surprise. He had expected a struggle.

He had not expected to be put down so cleanly and so quickly.

Kane took Mjoldr back from Griselda and settled it across his shoulder again.

"We're done here."

He turned and kept walking.

Kessa fell into step beside him, visibly pleased. Several of the local females who had been watching gave her longer, more considering looks than before.

A human who could back up that much noise with actual strength was not common.

Kessa's status among them had just risen, and everyone on the street knew it.

Griselda spoke quietly as they left the main avenue behind.

"You didn't use the Rage."

"Didn't need it."

Kessa bumped her shoulder against his, still moving a little carefully.

"You could have drawn it out and made a bigger show."

"I don't need a bigger show. I needed him on the ground and the rest of them to see that I'm not easy prey."

Kane glanced down at her.

"Your parents are still expecting us?"

"They are. And after last night and this morning, my father is going to be even more unpleasant than usual."

She smiled sharply.

"Try not to put him through the ground, too. I still have to live with the consequences."

The eastern residential district was quieter than the main avenue, but not by much.

Timber compounds sat behind low fences of woven bone and wood. The scent of cooking meat, fur, and territorial markers hung thick in the air.

Kessa led them to a sturdy two-story house with a wide porch and fresh claw marks carved into the gateposts, family territory signs, recently renewed.

She stopped at the gate and exhaled once.

"Try not to start anything," she muttered.

"My father already doesn't like humans. My mother is… more complicated."

The gate opened before Kane could answer.

Kessa's mother stepped out first.

She was an older tiger-striped female, still powerfully built, with the kind of full, heavy breasts that strained against a simple wrapped top and hips that had clearly carried and birthed strong children. Her dark hair was streaked with silver and tied loosely back.

The moment her eyes landed on Kane, her nostrils flared hard. A visible shudder ran through her. Her ears angled forward, and the scent of sudden, sharp heat rolled off her in a wave that even Griselda noticed.

Kessa's face went flat.

"Oh no."

The mother ignored her daughter completely. Her gaze locked on Kane with open, hungry interest.

"So this is the human," she said, voice lower and rougher than it should have been.

"You didn't tell me he smelled like that, Kessa."

Kessa's father appeared behind her, taller, leaner, with the same cold red-eyed intensity as Shenron, though older and more weathered. He took one look at his wife's posture and the way she was staring at Kane, then pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Lira. Not now."

Are they serious?

"I'm just greeting our guest," Lira replied, still not looking away from Kane. She stepped closer, her busty frame moving with deliberate softness, the wrapped top doing very little to contain the sway of her breasts.

"He's bigger than I expected. And the scent on him… Kessa, you let him mark you this thoroughly?"

Kessa moved between them with a territorial growl.

"Mother. You're in heat. Go inside before you embarrass yourself."

Lira finally glanced at her daughter, then back at Kane with a slow, appreciative smile.

"I can smell how thoroughly he used you last night, little one. You're still leaking him. That means he's strong enough to handle a real female, not just a daughter who ran off to play in tournaments."

Kessa's ears pinned flat. Her tail lashed hard.

"I will fight you in the yard. Do not test me right now."

Kane watched the exchange with raised eyebrows. Griselda stood slightly behind him, yellow eyes moving between mother and daughter with quiet fascination.

Kessa's father, Razanst, stepped fully onto the porch and fixed Kane with a hard stare.

"You brought my daughter home smelling like a breeding claim and already have my mate starting a cycle early. Explain yourself before I decide this visit ends at the gate."

Kane met the older male's eyes without flinching.

"Kessa chose to travel with me. She chose to stay. I don't force claims on anyone who doesn't want them."

Razan's lip curled.

"Pretty words. Humans always have pretty words. What do you actually intend? Use her until the novelty wears off and leave her carrying a half-blood pup she can't bring back here? Or are you one of those outsiders who thinks collecting our females makes you a king?"

"I'm trying to keep the continent from being wiped out by things worse than your packs," Kane answered evenly. "Kessa decided she wanted to be part of that. The rest is between her and me."

Lira made a low, interested sound and took another step forward, breasts shifting heavily under the wrap. The heat scent coming off her had grown stronger in the short time they had been standing there.

"He doesn't smell like a liar," she murmured, eyes half-lidded.

"He smells like a male who knows how to empty a female properly. Kessa, you should have brought him home sooner."

Kessa's voice went dangerously sweet.

"Mother. If you take one more step toward him, I am going to drag you into the training yard and remind you which of us still ranks higher in a real fight."
