Tom surfaced slowly, dragged up out of the dark he had been swimming in for God knows how many hours, by voices somewhere above him.

He didn’t open his eyes yet, listening to what the voices were saying...

"So is he going to die or not?" Sienna’s voice came out very bored. It was as if she was asking a question about a delayed flight.

"I don’t know yet, honestly. The scans are inconclusive - there could be a bleed, there could be nothing. He really needs to be in a hospital, Sienna, properly examined, not lying in a bed with an ice pack."

"I don’t have time to waste on a nobody, Davina. You know what I have at hand."

A pause. Then the response came.

"I understand. But if he dies in this house and it gets out - the public is going to want to see you grieve. Cameras outside the funeral with a thousand reporters asking how the tragic young widow is holding up. That’s not the story you want four weeks before the biggest launch of your career."

Silence. Tom felt it stretch out even through the fog in his skull.

"Fine." Sienna’s voice went flat, the decision getting made. "But I say you check him again, observe him for like thirty minutes, and if you still believe he needs to be hospitalized, then we do exactly that."

"Okay, fine. For you." The response came.

Then a phone buzzed, Sienna’s phone ringtone that Tom knew by heart, came through.

"I need to answer this immediately. Give me a moment." Sienna said and immediately her heels clicked away. She answered it mid-stride, already talking about fabric samples before she had even left the room.

Tom’s eyes cracked open then with curiosity to see where he was.

He could see he was in his room, in his bed, his head throbbing in slow, thick waves that pulsed behind his eyes every time his heart beat. The ceiling swam a little before it settled.

A woman stood over him with a penlight in one hand, checking his pupils with the kind of detachment usually reserved for livestock.

He recognized her instantly. Davina Williams. She was Sienna’s personal doctor, and one of her friends - he had seen her at the house before, always dressed sharp, married to some finance executive Tom had never bothered learning the name of. She had looked at him exactly once, the last time she had come by, with the same expression she wore now: like he was something tracked in on someone’s shoe.

"He doesn’t belong in our world, Sienna. Where did you get him?" Tom had overheard her saying to his wife the day of their wedding.

She clicked the penlight off and glanced at him, briefly, the way you’d glance at a delivery that had finally arrived.

"You’re awake." Not a question. If anything, the frown on her face went deeper.

"How did you even fall in the first place? Did you not see where you were walking?" She asked not looking directly at him. She had turned around, checking something on her phone.

Tom stared at her. His skull throbbed harder just trying to process the tone - not concern, not even irritation. Pure disdain, dressed up in professional calm, like his cracked skull was an inconvenience she was billing for.

"My head," he managed, voice dry and cracked. "It hurts. Bad."

Davina made a small noise in her throat, unimpressed, and reached for her bag to find something that was definitely not about Tom’s situation.

That was when the blue light bloomed behind Tom’s eyes.

[WELCOME BACK, HOST.]

[THE HEART SYSTEM HAS BOUND SUCCESSFULLY. LET’S GET YOU STARTED, SHALL WE?]

Tom went rigid on the bed. Davina, three feet away, didn’t react at all - didn’t see it, didn’t hear it. Whatever this was, it was happening entirely inside his skull.

[TUTORIAL MISSION: FIRST STEPS]

[PURPOSE: Train The Host To Stop Being A Doormat. A Man Who Cannot Say One Filthy Sentence To A Woman Will Never Survive What’s Coming.]

[OBJECTIVE: Whisper Into Davina Williams’s Ear. Tell Her Her Breasts Are Begging To Be Squeezed.]

[REWARD: $5,000. +1 CHARM. +5 RECOVERY.]

Tom’s eyes went wide enough to hurt.

"What?" He yelled inwardly.

He must have made some sound, because Davina glanced over with a raised brow, unimpressed by that too.

"What’s wrong with you now?" She demanded, tilting her head slightly.

"This is a joke," Tom thought at the blue light, frantic.

"This is - I can’t say that to her. She’s married. She hates me. She’ll have me thrown out of this bed and into the street."

[Would The Host Like To Keep Being A Pushover? A Man Everyone Walks Over, Even The Doctor Who Thinks You’re Beneath Her Shoes?]

[Or Would The Host Like To Find Out What It Feels Like To Make A Woman Look At Him Like Something Other Than Garbage? Show Her She Married The Wrong Husband.]

Tom’s jaw tightened. Every instinct in him said no, said this was insane, said Davina would slap him and tell Sienna and it would be one more humiliation stacked on top of a mountain of them.

"I can’t, I won’t." he thought back, weak even inside his own head.

[VERY WELL, HOST.]

The system’s tone shifted, gleeful in a way that made the hair on his arms rise.

[Penalty For Refusal Or Failure: The Host’s Cock Will Harden Instantly And Remain Visibly, Painfully Erect For 24 Hours. No Relief. No Privacy. Everyone Will See.]

[DEADLINE: 2:00]

A countdown appeared, stark and red against the blue, ticking down from two minutes with a sound like a heartbeat speeding up.

**1:59... 1:58... 1:57...**

Tom stared at Davina who was standing sharp-eyed, disdainful, utterly unaware that a countdown to his own ruin was burning down three feet from her face - and felt something close to panic claw up his throat.

"Are you having some kind of episode?" Davina asked flatly, capping her pen. "Blink twice if you can hear me."

1:41... 1:40... 1:39

Tom opened his mouth but nothing came out.
