**1:12... 1:11... 1:10...**

Tom’s mind raced faster than the clock. If this was real - if any of this was real, the system, the reward, all of it - then two minutes of humiliation bought him five thousand dollars he desperately needed.

Five thousand dollars was a dent in his mother’s debt, food that wasn’t scraped off someone else’s abandoned plate.

And if it wasn’t real, if his skull had just cracked something loose and he was hallucinating blue text out of a head injury, then all he’d lose was a little dignity he barely had left anyway. What was one more humiliation stacked on a mountain of them. He’d survived worse from people who hadn’t offered him a cent for it.

But if it was real and he failed because he didn’t do it, getting hard and humiliated for free, with nothing to show for it, was worse than either. That thought alone decided for him.

He wasn’t doing this for pride. He didn’t have any left to protect.

He swallowed hard then tried to push himself up on his elbows. Pain lanced through his skull immediately, sharp enough to make spots bloom behind his eyes, and he sucked in a breath through his teeth.

"What are you doing? Lie back down." Davina’s voice sharpened, more reflex than concern, and she leaned in closer to check whatever readout she was fussing with, her face suddenly inches from his. Close enough now that he could see the fine gold chain at her throat, the faint crease of irritation between her brows, the wedding band catching the light as she reached for his wrist to check his pulse.

**0:41... 0:40...**

This was it. This was the closest she’d get. If he didn’t move now, she’d straighten back up, step away, and the window would close along with the clock.

Tom’s heart slammed against his ribs, loud enough he was almost sure she could hear it too. His mouth had gone bone dry. Every rational part of him screamed that this was insane, that a man in his position didn’t get to say things like this to women like her, that the last month had taught him exactly how little room he had to move in this house.

He turned his head toward her ear before he could talk himself out of it, close enough to catch the clean, expensive scent of her perfume, something floral and cold, and forced the words out low and rough before the fear could close his throat.

"Your breasts are begging to be squeezed." He murmured.

The countdown vanished from behind his eyes. Silence rang out where the ticking had been.

Davina went completely still.

Then she jerked back like he’d burned her, her eyes wide, one hand flying up near her collarbone like she needed something to hold onto. Color rushed up her neck into her cheeks, fast, unmistakable, and for one strange second she didn’t look disdainful at all - just stunned, caught completely off guard by a man she’d walked in ready to dismiss without a second glance.

"Did you - " Her voice cracked, disbelieving. "Did you just say what I think you said?"

Tom’s stomach dropped straight through the mattress. Every muscle in him went taut, braced. He looked away fast, jaw tight, waiting for the slap, the scream, the end of whatever fragile thing was left of his life in this house. He counted his own heartbeat in the silence and hated how loud it was in his ears.

But instead of the slap he was expecting, the system dinged:

[MISSION COMPLETE.]

[REWARD DEPOSITED. CHECK YOUR PHONE, HOST.]

[CHARM +1]

[RECOVERY +5 IN EFFECT.]

Warmth spread through his skull almost instantly, the pounding behind his eyes dulling from a hammer to a dull throb, then to almost nothing at all. Tom’s breath caught. That part, at least, he could feel with his own body. That part wasn’t in his head.

"I dare you to repeat that," Davina snapped, voice climbing, color high in her cheeks. "Say that again, Tom Harlow, I dare you -"

[SEE? THAT WASN’T SO HARD.]

Tom rolled his eyes at the ceiling, at nothing, at the smug blue voice rattling around his skull like it had any right to be pleased with itself.

Then the door swung open.

"What is going on in here?" Sienna, still in her robe from the call she’d taken, glanced between them, brow furrowed in irritation more than curiosity.

"Davina, why are you shouting?"

Davina opened her mouth. Closed it. Opened it again, and nothing came out, just a stuttered breath, her eyes flicking to Tom and away again like she couldn’t decide if what had just happened to her was even real.

"Is his condition worse?" Sienna pressed, impatient, already half-turned back toward the door.

[YOU HEARD HER. GO ON, HOST. TELL YOUR WIFE HOW WELL YOU’RE RECOVERING.]

Tom said nothing. He kept his eyes fixed somewhere on the ceiling, giving nothing away, and after a beat Sienna’s phone buzzed in her hand. She checked it, sighed at whatever she saw, and walked back out without waiting for an answer, already talking to whoever was on the other end about fabric samples.

Tom didn’t look at Davina. Davina didn’t look at him either, not really - just stood there a second too long, muttering something to herself, low, like she was trying to talk herself out of what her own ears had just told her.

"He isn’t bold enough for that. He couldn’t have been." She gathered her equipment with hands that weren’t quite steady and walked out without another word.

The second the door clicked shut, Tom let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding the whole time, long and shaking.

Then he reached for his phone on the nightstand.

His hand wasn’t quite steady either. He unlocked the screen, opened the banking app, and there it was - a credit alert, timestamped seconds ago.

**+$5,000.00**

Tom stared at it. He blinked. Then he reread it, certain his eyes were playing tricks on him same as his head had been all morning but the number didn’t change. Five thousand dollars, sitting in an account that had held exactly one dollar an hour ago.

A laugh tore out of him before he could stop it, loud and disbelieving, half pain and half something close to joy, the first sound of real feeling he’d made in this house in a month.

He pressed the phone against his chest like he could hold onto the number that way, keep it from vanishing, and let his head fall back against the pillow.

"Oh my God! This is so unbelievable." He muttered and his thoughts spiraled.

Five thousand dollars. For one filthy sentence he’d been too scared to say. If that was real - if any of it was real - then everything he thought he knew about his place in this house, about what he was allowed to want, was about to be wrong.

He was still smiling at the ceiling, still catching his breath, when the door slammed open.

"Tom Harlow, you bloody nobody, how dare you?" Sienna’s voice rang out.
