Karn Bastion had lived an ordinary life. His happiest moments were the birth of his son and, strangely enough, the years he spent fighting in Vietnam. He was awarded the Silver Star due to his achievements in the war and the bravery he displayed in his actions. But the Vietnam war did not just come with benefits; he had lost many friends in the war and most importantly he had lost both of his eyes in a hand to hand combat fight with an enemy soldier.

Today was Karn’s monthly check up day at the hospital, his grandson was driving him to the hospital. His grandson helped around the house with his dad and was Karn’s most favored grandson by far.

Karn had always thanked his lack of sight because he looked at people not by their appearance but by their nature. He called it a gift rather than a disability. Of course not everybody agreed with that but he was way above the age of caring what others thought about his world view.

As he sat on the seat in the car with a slight smile on his face, his heart suddenly started pumping harder and harder.

Karn quickly clutched his chest but none of it helped.

His grandson noticed and asked "Grandpa are you okay? Oh god please be okay" terror clear on his face as he drove even faster. Karn clutched his chest as hard as he could.

"Grandpa, please stay with me." Karn’s grandson spoke.

Karn knew it was coming, it had to happen someday anyways.

A hand landed on Karn’s grandson’s arm.

"Don’t speed." Karn forced as many words he could muster out.

"Please god...." Karn’s grandson ignored his grandpa entirely.

"You’re a good boy." Karn smiled.

Five minutes away from the hospital he heard something in his ear pop and lost consciousness.

Coming back to his senses he found himself on a bed. Karn was left confused considering the lack of sight he had no idea what was going on.

No noises could be heard. His grandson was not beside him. There was nothing.

Then suddenly.... a voice rang out in his ear.

Karn got up instantly on the bed and screamed "who is there?" noticing his ability to get up quickly he also noticed he felt no pain even after the heart attack he just had a few moments ago.

Karn waited for an answer but was met with something even more surprising. Like a sixth sense the area around him was illuminated almost like he still had vision but the world looked like waves built with lines bending and twisting.

Along with the vision came a grin that had not been seen since his time in the war had also come back after such a long time.

He could see, not with eyes. He saw waves moving. It had been almost fifty years.

Karn could care less about what that voice was at this point he moved around the room using his newborn sight touching everything with his eyes still closed. If a normal person saw what he was doing they would think the old man had gone crazy.

Eventually Karn calmed down and understood what was going on, he had gained the ability to see again without his eyes. How that was possible was still a mystery to the old man but he had to rule out the possible scenarios first.

’Hallucination?’ Karn touched the wall. No.

’Dream?’ Karn pinched himself. No.

’Heaven?’ Would they have such a shabby room in heaven? No.

Karn looked at the only door in the room and walked over slightly awkwardly.

Karn decided to open the door leading to the outside and go outside for the first time without someone supporting the old body of his.

Karn had a healthy body but due to his lack of eyesight before he did not have the ability to properly take care of his body, he felt like his freedom had been returned to him after such a long time.

"How long has it been since I have felt like this?" Karn said as he rubbed his white beard with a pleased smile.

Karn noticed a bunch of people grouped up nearby when he left the room.

Karn had taken only ten steps but something felt wrong.

He turned around and amazingly, the room was gone, only the empty grass remained.

Karn, despite his bewilderment, slowly made his way to the group and heard them talking.

"Say sorry right now for bumping into me!" said a burly man with a sword on his waist. His expression exuded anger.

"I-I’m sorry mister, It’s just that you bumped into me first." Said the young woman timidly with her hands behind her back.

Karn heard the two arguing and got closer to the circle of people around the two. Karn noticed the young man in front of him and decided to ask him a few questions.

"Young man, what is going on here?" Looking at the young man around the age of 18 years old.

"huh? are you talking to me?" The young man asked, pointing towards himself, noticing that the old man in front of him had his eyes closed.

"Young men these days have no manners. Who else would I be talking to?" Karn asked the young man with mild annoyance in his voice.

The young man was shocked! How does this old man know where he is? He had even shifted his position to the left of the man when he talked to him and the old man had moved his head accordingly.

The young man was surprised but this was the crazy people he experienced weekly due to the state of the village he lived in. Strange people and martial masters always came through here to stay the night because the biggest city in the province of Sichuan was a days worth of travel away from Crane Village.

"The woman bumped into the big guy over there, and the big guy got super angry I haven’t seen the two of them ever before so they must be both travelers." The young man told Karn.

"So the woman bumped into the guy huh?" Karn caressed his beard once again watching the two argue at each other with closed eyes. The young man looked at Karn once again and was sure that the old man was able to see without his eyes. ’He must be a martial warrior.’ The young man thought.

"You!! Come here" The angry burly man shot his arm at the young woman to grab her. Every person looking thought for sure that the young woman was done for. But surprise was the only thing left on everyone’s face as the hand of the burly man grabbed only thin air.
