Old Blind Man in a Cultivation World

Chapter 16: Failed! Sect Head Position!

Xiao Chen closed the box and gave it to his personal servant beside him. The servant held the box with the severed head inside with shaking hands.

’Why do I have to hold this??’ She thought.

Xiao Chen wanted nothing more than to cut his brother down right now but he had neither the strength nor the status to be able to do so. His machinations behind the scenes would see to that though.

"Father has already decreed that once he dies the succession war between us brothers and sisters will begin. Xiao Feng, the number of elders on your side have considerable strength. I must admit I wonder if there are any left that haven’t gone to our dear sister." Xiao Chen spoke with a silver tongue dipped with venom.

"The Grand Elder." Xiao Feng remarked.

"Indeed, if the grand elder joined any one of us, they would become Sect Head without question. Even that puny Xiao Cheng would be able to head our sect." Xiao Chen nodded.

"That punk could only hope for that in his dreams. He might have stood a chance before his dantian got destroyed by the grand elder of the Frost Moon Palace but now he is but a lamb waiting to be slaughtered. Even father has no way to help him." Xiao Feng spoke with contempt.

"Alas, the grand elder has sworn off any mortal attachments. He only appears to protect the Sect in times of peril or if the Sect Head has been killed. The succession war will be upon us soon Xiao Feng, I hope it gets to be me who ends your life. I truly have hated you since I laid my eyes on you." Xiao Chen spoke while smiling like a saint. How had the words that conveyed such malice been spoken by such a benevolent face Xiao Feng wondered.

"It won’t be long before it starts. Father is nearing the end of his lifespan. Next time the head in the box won’t be your servant, it will be you and it shall be a gift to all of your victims." Xiao Feng spoke in response as he made his final move that reflected a check on the enemy king and left the courtyard with his servant.

Xiao Feng left the courtyard leisurely. Xiao Chen looked upon the chess board and the benevolent smile slowly faded.

Back in Crane Village, the test that was given to Shin had concluded.

"Failed." That was all Karn had to say.

The test had finished in absolute failure to the dismay of Shin.

The dagger had failed to pierce Shin’s eye.

Karn had stopped the dagger before it could pierce the skin tissue. Shin had meant every word and would have stabbed himself in the eye if Karn had not stopped him in time. If not for God’s Eye Karn would not have been able to discern the extent of Shin’s determination. Words may lie but the body doesn’t.

"You have failed the test..." Karn said to Shin.

"Elder.." Shin, who had just been saved from losing one of his eyes, spoke in disbelief. Shin collected his thoughts and Rei who had screamed sighed in relief running over towards Shin and checking his face like a mother.

"This old monster is crazy, to make a child as old as 12 do something like this." Rei muttered her thoughts without realizing it.

"This humble disciple inquires why I failed the Master’s test. I have done what is asked of me!" Shin bowed in a respectful manner towards Karn. The version of Shin who was crying and shaking in fear moments ago was gone and what was left was a determined man with a burning desire for change.

"So this is the extent of your understanding little Shin." Karn spoke with a hint of disappointment in his tone.

Shin froze.

"Master..." The old man sighed in disbelief.

"To see as I do is to remove your dependence on your sight. To blind yourself is to feel the world, not see it. You believed destroying your eyes would grant you understanding. Tell me, if a swordsman loses his arm does he instantly understand the sword?" The intent that came from Karn at this moment seemed unparalleled like a wise sage that had understood all things.

"No Master!" Shin felt his mouth dry. He felt like his brain was reshaping itself under Karn’s teachings.

"If a Cultivator destroys his dantian.. does he understand Qi?" Karn questioned.

"No Master," Shin answered.

"Then why would blinding yourself allow you to see?" With those words, silence had returned.

Shin’s face burned with shame.

"This disciple has failed to understand the master’s teachings!" Shin kowtowed once again in shame.

"You failed because you sought the easiest interpretation. Not because you lacked courage."

"Yes Master, this disciple understands." Shin understood his faults.

"Good, it is also because of your display of courage that right here right now I will accept you as my disciple under the heavens." Karn smiled in response. The lad had quite the straight forward personality just like one of his grandson’s.

"This disciple greets Master!" Shin exclaimed in earnest.

The seeds of change inside Shin had just begun.

"As for your punishment for failure Shin lad take this." Karn threw a strip of black cloth to Shin.

"Tie this on your eyes until I say you can take them off." The benefits of this would be realized much later in Shin’s life.

"Yes Master!" Shin agreed happily. He would have taken his own eyes out for Karn’s tutelage, this little inconvenience did not matter to him.

"Good" Karn said as he looked towards the quest window that had appeared.
