Shin heard the question and instinctively answered.

"Then... I’ll become stronger." Shin clenched his small fists.

"If I can’t protect them with the strength I have, then I’ll find another way. And if I still can’t, I’ll keep trying." Shin reasoned with himself.

Karn nodded with a slight smile. The flower had only just begun to bloom, after all. Karn then looked at Rei looking for an answer from her.

Rei looked towards Shin before answering.

"Then I’ll still become stronger." She responded to Karn echoing the same answer as Shin.

"And if someone helps you anyway?" Karn asked in return.

At this, Rei fell silent. Truly she did not know how to answer this question of Karn.

"Koko... not bad." Karn relented on the questioning. This question they would have to consider as they grow.

"Shin, you cultivate because you refuse to give up. And Rei, you cultivate because you refuse to remain helpless." Karn said as he rubbed his beard.

"Both are good reasons. But remember this..." His smile faded.

"Strength isn’t about carrying every burden yourself. It’s about becoming strong enough to decide which burdens are for yours to carry." Karn had finished his lesson with this sentence.

""Yes Master!"" Both of the disciples shouted in unison.

"Now then let’s start the training plan I have created for you two." Karn smiled mischievously.

Rei and Shin broke into a cold sweat at those words, their master had never given such an expression but they knew it wasn’t good.

Karn had split the duo up.

Shin was tasked to dodge pebbles shot by Karn at him.

Rei, on the other hand, was tasked with stealing a single pebble from Karn. She had been given a wooden sword, though Karn made it clear that she was free to use whatever method she wanted.

"Let’s begin..." Karn said as he flicked his thumb and a pebble shot out from his hand.

The pebble flew fast and landed on Shin’s shoulder.

"Ouch!" Shin said as he moved his body to the left, but the pebble hit his stomach all the same. No matter how he moved or dodged he always seemed to be hit.

At the same time Rei also was going mad in frustration. Her wooden sword was flying around in the training grounds. She operated the Heavenly Thief Technique at its full capacity but no matter how she feinted her hand could not land on a pebble.

The master and the student duo took a few breaks in between due to Shin and Rei’s exhaustion but the result was all the same. Shin had walked out of the training grounds by the time the sun had set with small pebble sized bruises all over his body.

Rei could be seen attacking the training dummy relentlessly to release her frustration. She was not able to steal a single pebble from Karn the entire day even though Karn had not used any martial techniques.

Both of them steeled their resolve. They would do better tomorrow. No, they had to do better.

The next day began with the same training. Shin was pelted with pebbles once again until...

"Shin..." Karn spoke and the rain of pebbles stopped.

Shin’s entire body trembled in pain but the kid still stood tall.

"Yes Master?" Shin replied wondering why his master had stopped.

"When I throw a pebble your way... why do you move?" Karn questioned while dodging Rei’s attacks at the same time.

Shin was perplexed at this question. Why did he move? Because he wanted to not get hit! Was it not obvious?

"...Because I do not want to be hit master." Shin answered.

"Your eyes are gone. Stop trying to fight like someone who has them!" Karn sighed inwardly. Rei was beginning to understand the principles behind his training, but Shin was still trying to solve the problem the same way he had from the beginning.

"Don’t dodge." Karn spoke subsequently.

"What?" Shin froze upon hearing Karn.

"The next pebble I throw, don’t dodge." Karn explained once again.

"I understand master....!!" Shin spoke and stood still. He still was not clear at what Karn had meant but tried his best at comprehending Karn’s wisdom.

A pebble shot out and hit Shin in the leg. Even though the impact left another bruise, Shin barely made a noise. He had gotten used to the pain by this point.

"What did you feel?" Karn was interested in Shin’s reply.

"The pebble...?" Shin asked.

"No. Before the pebble hits you." Karn shook his head.

’Before the pebble hit me...?’ Shin thought to himself as he reflected on the countless number of pebbles that had hit him.

At this question, Shin had an epiphany. Suddenly, all of Karn’s actions since the day they had met began to make sense.

Shin’s senses heightened and focus intensified. The slight displacement of air, the sound of Karn’s clothes and footsteps, and even the direction of the wind seemed to converge into a single point.

For a brief moment, Shin felt as though the darkness surrounding him had disappeared. Karn’s silhouette had appeared before him for a moment before it disappeared into the void.

Shin stood in shock.

"What was that?!" Shin questioned himself.

’Is this what Master sees?’ Shin wondered to himself.

Shin tried once again focusing all of his attention chasing the fleeting feeling. But no matter how he tried, the vision did not return.

"Do not chase it. The more you try to see the transparent world the less it will come to you." Karn spoke seeing that Shin had finally glimpsed the same view he had seen.

’Transparent world?’ This was the first time Shin had heard his master describe the vision he saw. But it fit his perspective completely.

"Again...phew" Karn spoke as he shot another pebble.

The pebbles hit Shin all the same but every once in a while, Shin’s focus and senses accumulated into one and the vision returned for a moment.

During the evening, a pebble flew and for the first time during his second day of training, Shin saw the transparent world. The world seemed to resonate in waves, his senses became hyper aware. The pebble which should have hit his shoulder missed Shin’s body narrowly.
