"Honorable Elder, a disciple from the Martial Hall is here to meet you." A guard spoke respectfully as he approached the training grounds.
Karn had just finished reading the results of the training when a guard came running in about a disciple who had come to see him.
"Koko.. What has he come to inquire about?" Karn asked the guard as he closed the Master’s Appraisal skill system window.
"The Elder Mo of Martial Hall has invited the elder to watch over the scheduled Martial Exchanges tomorrow. According to the customs an elder of each Young Masters faction can be allowed in to watch over the fights fairly." The guard spoke of the political state of the Martial Hall.
"Martial Hall? Martial Exchanges?" Karn questioned.
The guard gave a wry smile. As one of the mortal servants who regularly read the daily jade slips, he was surprisingly well informed about the happenings within the sect.
"Honorable Elder, the Martial Hall is an arena overseen by the elders. It exists to resolve disputes between disciples. If disputes are not settled on their own they can schedule a fight at the Martial Hall to resolve it. In the Martial Hall the winner of the fight can decide the truth of the matter." The guard spoke.
’Koko... so it’s ’history is written by the victor’ personified in reality.’ Karn thought to himself.
"I see, thank you. Go on, let the disciple inside." Karn told the guard, understanding the situation a little more.
A moment later an outer sect disciple walked into the training grounds and repeated the same invitation that the guard had told Karn.
"I see.. but is there no one else who can go?" Karn asked the guard. One of his conditions for working with Xiao Cheng was that he would not be bothered by responsibilities. This is why he was made an honorable elder of the Dragon Meteor Sect.
"The fourth young master has no other elders at his side at the moment that is why you have been given the invitation. The Honorable Elder can of course refuse. The fourth young master has not asked you to participate personally." The disciple who was also part of Xiao Cheng’s faction spoke.
Karn understood the implication. He was not being told to do something. He had the complete right to refuse which was why Xiao Cheng had sent over an outer sect disciple to send this message. But the fact he was asked meant that this was also a test if he could be relied upon.
"That brat... trying to make me work after retirement." Karn spoke sarcastically.
"Tell the young master that I will be there tomorrow to represent him." Karn said as he shooed the outer disciple away with his hand.
The outer disciple’s eyes widened and so did his smile at Karn’s answer.
"Thank you Elder! I will let the young master know immediately." The disciple said as he hurried out of Karn’s courtyard.
"Master really hates responsibilities right?" Shin whispered to Rei.
"Shh! You are being too loud." Rei spoke as she smacked Shin over the head.
Karn’s face turned towards his disciples slowly with a devilish smile. The training continued deep into the night before the two of them were allowed to go to sleep.
-------------
The full moon arose deep into the night. The wind carried with it a slight breeze that foreshadowed the incoming rain.
In a certain courtyard sat Elder Cho alongside Xiao Chen, the Second Young Master.
The snake slithered its way around Xiao Chen’s neck as the two sipped more of their tea.
"Elder Cho, it is one thing for Zhao Long to fail in his assassination mission but how did news of Zhao Long’s defeat spread through the sect so quickly?" Xiao Chen asked Elder Cho. A middle aged man known for his dark dealings in the underbelly of Dragon’s Rest City.
Elder Cho was a chubby middle-aged man who possessed one of the greatest fortunes within the sect, rivaling even the wealthy merchants of Dragon’s Rest City. Yet his wealth was not what made people fear him.
It was his ability to make people disappear without leaving a trace.
"I have investigated the same thing, young master. My sources have concluded that the origin of the rumors seem to come from the Third Young master." Elder Cho spoke as he sipped from the tea cup.
"That odd sister of mine... her intelligence network has surpassed mine already. To think Zhao Long would fail the assassination plot as well... Xiao Cheng that cripple hid his hand so well. " Xiao Chen said as he patted his pet snake’s head.
"Indeed, I spent quite the sum to get the White Dragon Lord to send Zhao Long as well. All for it to end in failure..." Elder Cho sighed.
"We can’t be sure that Xiao Cheng doesn’t have other trump cards hiding just because he revealed his hand a little." Xiao Chen spoke as his slit-like eyes closed even further.
"Elder Cho for tomorrow’s Martial Hall exchange, I need you to do something for me...." Xiao Chen smiled.
-----------------
The morning sun arose, the area around the martial hall felt humid due to the rain that had fallen last night.
Four Elders made their way inside the grand hall that held a massive arena made for fighting. Each of them radiated the strength of Tier One Martial Warriors.
Each of the elders brought their disciples with them as well. Most of them contained second to third tier martial warrior prowess.
Shin, who still had his blindfold on, bumped into one of the disciples of one of the elders.
"Ah.. Sorry..." Shin spoke worrying about offending the disciple.
"It’s fine, just don’t let it happen again." The young man called Disciple Cai spoke as he looked at Karn briefly before making his way towards his master with a slight smile.
"Koko... why does the air in this hall seem more hostile than the arena in the middle." Karn said in passing as the three elders glanced at him.
The four elders were Elder Cho, Elder Wang, Elder Mu and the newly appointed Elder Karn.
A fifth elder then entered the Martial Hall, Elder Mo the martial hall overseer.
