Old Blind Man in a Cultivation World
Chapter 52: To Understand The Unknown!"Boy, today is your lucky day. Your talent for cultivation is as high as the mountains." The old man spoke heartily.
"Cultivator? Is that a candy?" Hong Tao had never heard of such a thing.
"Keke, not quite. It will help you become stronger than everyone else." The old man spoke.
"St-Stronger?" Hong Tao muttered in disbelief. His tears started building up from under his eyes.
"Keke, Indeed. You will be able to trample your peers like a god among men." The old man spoke excitedly as he flung his arms around in demonstration.
"WAHHHH!!!! I don’t want to be strong!! WAHHH!! I just want a friend!" The twelve year old Hong Tao cried running back to his mom in the house. As he ran in the house the top of the door bent inwards due to his size.
The old man stared in disbelief. His mouth slightly agape. How did the idea of becoming strong cause a grown child like Hong Tao to cry? The old man wondered.
For the following few days the old man disguised himself and observed the overgrown child called Hong Tao. How he stayed inside, the cries that seemed to shake the earth itself during nighttime. The toys that broke the second his hand laid on them followed by the cries that shook the heavens itself.
Villagers would come out, yelling at the house and the calamity inside to quieten down. Until eventually, a drunk middle aged man had enough in the middle of the night one day. One hand carried a bottle of rice wine and the other carried a torch.
"That brat keeps crying... I haven’t been able to sleep properly for the past three days. I can’t do it anymore. I hope that the whole house just burns." The middle aged man spoke as he walked past the household that contained the calamity.
As if fate itself had decided to mock the man, his foot suddenly struck a large rock. The rock shifted slightly but the remaining force caused the man to throw his torch to catch his fall.
As the torch fell it landed right on top of the house of the calamity right in front of the man’s eyes.
"Ah shit... I really did it this time." He spoke as he got up quickly and ran to his house in fear of being blamed.
The torch burned atop the thatched roof until the flames finally caught. Within moments, smoke began pouring through the cracks of the old house.
"Tao’er!" Hong Tao’s mother was the first to notice. She rushed toward her son and pulled him close.
"Tao’er, wake up! The house is on fire!"
"FIRE!?" Hong Tao’s eyes widened. He looked toward the flames spreading across the roof.
"Run! We need to get out!" His mother’s face turned pale.
She grabbed his hand and pulled but Hong Tao froze. His father was still inside.
"Father!" Hong Tao turned around and rushed toward the house.
"Tao’er, wait!" His mother desperately grabbed his oversized arm.
"I’ll get your father! You need to leave!"
"No!" Hong Tao’s enormous hand wrapped around his mother’s wrist.
"Father is still inside!" The twelve-year-old boy looked at the burning house. For once, there was no fear in his eyes, just determination as he charged inside.
"TAO’ER!" His mother screamed.
The wooden beams above Hong Tao’s head groaned under the heat. He could barely see through the smoke.
"FATHER!"
"Cough... Tao’er?" A weak voice came from deeper inside.
Hong Tao immediately followed it and he found his father trapped beneath a fallen wooden beam.
"Father!" Hong Tao rushed over. The beam that would have taken several grown men to lift was nothing to him. He grabbed it with both hands.
"Get up!" His muscles bulged. With a roar, Hong Tao threw the beam aside.
"Come!" His father struggled to stand but before he could take a step a sound resounded from above him.
BOOM!
Another beam collapsed from the ceiling. Hong Tao instinctively stepped forward. The enormous burning wooden beam crashed directly onto his back.
"TAO’ER!" His father screamed.
Hong Tao staggered and his knees bent. But he did not fall.
"Run...Father... run..."" Hong Tao gritted his teeth.
His father stared at the boy beneath the burning beam.
"No..." His father shook his head.
"I won’t leave you son." His father gave a weary smile.
"Go!" Hong Tao’s eyes widened.
"No! If you stay, I’ll stay!" His father grabbed onto him.
The flames grew hotter until the roof began collapsing around them. Outside, his mother stood helplessly in the smoke.
"Tao’er!" She could hear her son’s cries of pain but she couldn’t reach him.
She tried rushing inside but several of the villagers grabbed her.
"Let me go! My son and husband are there! Let me go!" She struggled desperately.
BOOM!
The entire roof collapsed and the villagers fell silent. The mother stopped struggling, her eyes stared blankly at the burning house.
"...Tao’er?" A small whisper escaped her lips.
"No..." Then her legs gave out and she covered her mouth.
"No, no, no..." Tears poured down her face.
"Please...Please god don’t take my son..." Inside the burning ruins, Hong Tao felt the weight pressing against his back. His body trembled. He was afraid, he had always been afraid.
Afraid of hurting people, afraid of being called a monster. Afraid of being alone but he couldn’t let his parents die.
Not them who accepted him for who he was. Hong Tao clenched his fists.
"I won’t let you die!" He pushed against the burning rubble.
"AHHHHHHHHH!" His muscles screamed and the earth beneath his feet cracked. The rubble slowly began to rise as his father stared at him in disbelief.
"I’ll protect you father..." Hong Tao’s tears mixed with the soot covering his face.
The old man watching from the shadows finally moved.
BOOM!
A wave of Qi swept across the burning house and the flames were extinguished instantly. The collapsed beams froze in midair before gently falling to the ground.
The old man appeared beside Hong Tao. With a single hand, he lifted the remaining rubble as though it weighed nothing.
