The next morning...

A knock echoed through the base.

"They’re here."

Valen stood up and walked toward the entrance while Qasim quickly followed behind him.

Waiting outside were two unfamiliar figures.

The first was a tall man with short black hair streaked with gray despite his young appearance. He wore a simple black coat, his sharp eyes calmly observing everything around him.

Beside him stood a woman with long silver hair tied behind her back. Her expression remained emotionless, and unlike the man, she just looks forward.

"So you’re Qasim."

The man smiled politely.

"I’m one of the Black Seed officials."

"And she’ll be conducting today’s trial."

Qasim nodded.

"...What exactly do I have to do?"

The man clasped his hands behind his back.

"It’s simple."

"My partner possesses the ability capable of amplifying emotions."

"We’ll push your emotions to their limits."

"Your reactions under that pressure will determine whether you’re worthy of attempting Awakening."

Qasim quietly nodded.

"...Understood."

Before the trial could begin...

Valen suddenly spoke.

"...Is that really all?"

"The last time I checked you were still using the classic trial."

The official looked at him.

"You might want to update your sources."

"Because for the next months we will be using this method instead."

Valen didn’t smile.

"And this alone is enough?"

"Isn’t your job to make sure the participant is truly qualifi—"

"There have been..."

The man interrupted.

"...unexpected changes."

Silence.

Valen stared directly into the official’s eyes.

For several seconds...

Neither of them spoke.

Finally...

Valen simply nodded.

"...I understand."

Qasim didn’t understand what had just happened, but he clearly caught the trace of anger hidden behind Valen’s usual smile.

...

"Let’s begin."

The woman slowly raised one hand and in the next second...

Thousands of voices exploded inside his head.

His pupils shrank.

It felt as though an entire city had begun screaming all at once.

Fear.

Sadness.

Despair.

Rage.

Countless voices with it’s emotions crashed into his mind without warning.

His head throbbed.

His chest tightened.

Even breathing suddenly became difficult.

"Ngh..."

He instinctively grabbed his head.

Every fiber of his body wanted to collapse onto the floor.

He wanted to scream.

To cry.

His face twisted in pain as sweat streamed down his forehead.

He felt himself being swallowed by something far greater than himself.

Something terrifying.

But he didn’t surrender to the pain or the fear and stayed quiet.

Valen’s expression immediately changed.

"What the hell..."

He looked toward the two officials, only to freeze because they both looked shocked as well.

Especially the woman.

"...This shouldn’t..." She whispered.

The official immediately raised a hand.

"Stop."

The pressure vanished instantly.

Qasim nearly stumbled forward before catching himself.

He took several deep breaths, desperately trying to calm his racing heart.

The man silently watched him.

For a brief moment...

Sadness flashed across his face.

He lowered his head and quietly muttered something to himself, then he looked back up.

"...Congratulations."

"You’ve been deemed worthy of attempting Awakening."

Before Qasim could react—

Valen stepped forward.

"Worthy?"

His voice was noticeably colder.

"You people don’t care whether he lives or dies."

"You just want to take the risk to strengthen Black Seed’s forces as quickly as possible because you’re afrai—"

"Watch your tongue."

The official’s voice rose sharply.

The room instantly fell silent.

After a few seconds he sighed and his tone became gentle once again.

"...Please remember, you’re the leader of this team."

Valen clenched his fists.

He wanted to argue, but before another word could be spoken.

"I’ll do it."

Qasim’s breathing was still uneven.

Even so... His eyes never wavered.

Valen looked at him.

After several long seconds...

Valen slowly stepped aside.

"...Then go."

The official reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black box.

He carefully held it between both hands.

"Inside this box is a fragment of the Cube."

"The moment I open it... You’ll be exposed to its pressure."

He looked directly at Qasim.

"Are you ready?"

Qasim nodded.

"...Yes."

Click.

The box slowly opened.

...

A tiny prick spread across the back of Qasim’s hand.

Then...

Nothing.

"...Huh?"

The room became completely silent.

Qasim blinked.

Confused.

Even the adults felt confusion.

Qasim cautiously looked inside the box.

Resting there was an irregular fragment no larger than a ring.

Its shape resembled an ordinary broken stone.

Yet...

Its surface looked like the night sky itself.

Countless stars.

Nebulas.

Colors he couldn’t even name.

It was as though someone had carved out a tiny piece of the universe and placed it inside the box.

"...Beautiful..."

Without realizing it, Qasim slowly reached toward it.

Click.

The lid suddenly closed.

Qasim blinked before awkwardly scratching his head.

"S-Sorry..."

"It was just so beautiful that I forgot myself."

No one replied.

The two officials weren’t even looking at his face anymore.

Their eyes were fixed on the back of his right hand.

Thin black lines had appeared on his skin.

They spread in every direction like cracks across shattered stone, branching naturally until they covered the back of his hand.

The man slowly spoke.

"...Time?"

The woman swallowed.

"I..."

"I was too shocked."

"There may have been a few seconds of delay but even then..."

She looked back at Qasim.

"...This is the fastest result we’ve ever recorded."

The man remained silent.

"...Let’s confirm it."

He looked toward Qasim.

"Without turning around..."

"Can you sense anything behind you?"

Qasim frowned.

He closed his eyes for a moment.

"...There’s something."

"It feels... Small."

"About a meter behind me."

"Good now turn around."

Qasim saw that behind him was a bee flying almost one meter away. (or about 3.28 feet)

The official finally smiled.

"...That confirms it."

He looked toward his partner.

"He has awakened."

The woman’s expression remained frozen.

"...He’s the fastest case in our records."

Qasim followed the bee flying towards the man before despair in his black coat.

He then lowered his gaze toward the back of his hand.

The strange black pattern remained there.

A wave of excitement hits him as he thought about being special again.

While everyone else reacted with excitement, Valen was the only one who remained silent, standing there with a hand covering his face.

After a moment thinking, he quietly whispered to himself,

"I might’ve just hit the jackpot this time..."

Only then did he lower his hand, put a smile on his face and join the boy in his joy.
