Doran let out a long sigh as he got out of bed.
"...That brat is going to give me a headache."
Yesterday, Qasim had spent almost the entire day following him around, asking over and over to teach him Nahr’Keth.
"I thought kids hated studying..."
He rubbed his forehead before getting dressed.
Today was his day off from Team Four of the Black Seed.
Which meant...
Time for his other job.
---
A carriage dropped him off in one of the wealthiest streets in Cerys.
The road itself looked different from the rest of the city. Clean stone pavement, decorated trees, elegant buildings, and expensive carriages constantly coming and going.
Doran stopped in front of a large building.
Above the entrance hung a polished wooden sign.
**Ancient Relics & Artifacts**
He stepped inside.
Shelves filled with relics, strange tools, old books, rings, necklaces, crystals, and mysterious artifacts stretched across the store.
After changing into his work uniform, Doran immediately got to work.
He checked the inventory.
Looked over the request list to see what customers wanted.
Then reviewed today’s waiting list.
*Ding.*
The entrance bell rang.
Without looking up, Doran spoke professionally.
"Welcome to Ancient Relics & Artifacts. How may I—"
He finally raised his head.
"..."
Standing there was a white-haired boy with bright blue eyes...
...and an extremely annoying smile.
Doran almost broke character.
Almost.
"Welcome to the shop, sir. We specialize in ancient relics and artifacts. May I ask if you have a registration?"
Qasim wasn’t listening.
He was too busy staring.
"So... this is how Uncle Doran acts at work..."
It reminded him of the stories his father used to laugh about whenever someone from his old workplace met him at his new one.
"...Sir?" Doran repeated.
Qasim snapped back to reality.
"R-Registration?"
"I see. Then you’ll need to register first."
Doran calmly pulled out a form.
"Please fill this application, then pay the registration fee of five gold coins. After that, your name will be added to the waiting list, and you’ll be able to place orders."
Qasim looked at the paper.
**Registration Fee: 5 Gold Coins**
"..."
"...Five?"
He almost dropped the form.
The Black Seed’s monthly salary was only around five gold coins, depending on completed missions.
"So... I have to work for an entire month..."
"...just to earn the right to wait in line?"
Rich people were terrifying.
"If you’re unable to pay," Doran continued politely, "I’ll have to ask you to leave."
Just as he was about to escort Qasim outside—
"Stop!"
A familiar girl’s voice echoed through the shop.
"Why are you being so mean to my savior?!"
Both of them turned.
Melissa stood at the entrance with her arms crossed and one cheek puffed out.
She wore a beautiful white-and-red dress, looking every bit like a noble’s daughter.
Doran bowed slightly.
"Lady Melissa. What a pleasant surprise. What brings you here today?"
"This is my mother’s shop, Uncle."
She pouted.
"And I told you to stop calling me ’Lady.’"
"I don’t understand what you mean, my lady."
"...Forget it."
She walked straight toward Qasim.
"So, what are you doing here?"
Qasim froze.
There was no way he could admit he had come to bother Doran until he agreed to teach him Nahr’Keth.
"..."
Thankfully...
"It doesn’t matter!"
Melissa smiled brightly.
"You’re always welcome here!"
She turned toward Doran.
"Give him a VIP application."
"..."
Doran silently opened another drawer and pulled out a different form.
Qasim accidentally glanced at it.
**VIP Registration: 100 Gold Coins**
He nearly choked.
Melissa grabbed the paper before Doran could say anything.
"Name?"
"Q-Qasim."
She quickly filled everything out before handing him a small silver badge engraved with the shop’s emblem.
"There."
"With this, you can place orders anytime."
She looked toward Doran.
"I could’ve made one for you too."
"No need my lady."
"Your loss."
She turned back toward Qasim.
"So?"
"What did you actually come here for?"
Qasim opened his mouth...
...then closed it again.
He had absolutely no idea what this shop even sold.
Melissa noticed immediately.
She giggled.
"Come on."
She grabbed his wrist.
"Let’s have some tea first."
---
A few minutes later...
The two kids sat inside a nearby café.
Qasim took one sip.
His eyes widened.
"This tea is amazing!"
"How much is it?"
"One silver coin."
"..."
He nearly choked for the second time today.
Everything around this district was ridiculously expensive.
Melissa smiled.
"You aren’t from around here, are you?"
Qasim thought for a moment before nodding.
"I can’t really explain where I’m from..."
"It’s... a secret."
She accepted that answer without pressing further.
"Then let me explain our currency."
Qasim listened carefully.
"There are four main coins."
"Copper coins are the most common. You use them for everyday purchases."
"Ten copper coins equal one silver coin. Most middle-class workers earn and spend silver."
"Ten silver coins equal one gold coin. Merchants and wealthy families usually deal in gold."
"And finally..."
"Ten gold coins equal one platinum coin."
She smiled proudly.
"If gold can buy almost anything..."
"...then platinum can buy practically everything."
"Only nobles and royalty regularly use platinum coins."
"I see..."
The system was almost exactly like the fantasy novels Qasim used to read.
Melissa suddenly leaned forward.
"I won’t ask about your secret job..."
"But I imagine it’s dangerous."
"So..."
"How about giving you some protection?"
---
Back at the shop, Melissa carefully opened a display case.
Inside rested a simple silver ring with a smooth black gemstone.
She placed it in Qasim’s hand.
"This relic creates a protective barrier."
"It was discovered inside ancient caves built by the Tree Race before their extinction."
"It can block around ten attacks from a trained soldier..."
"...or one attack strong enough to kill you."
"When its energy runs out, simply leave it under sunlight for a day to recharge."
Qasim stared at the ring.
"T-This is way too expensive..."
"I can’t accept this."
Melissa rolled her eyes.
"Oh please."
"I can literally see your heart jumping with happiness."
"Just take it."
"It’s a gift."
"The first and last one, so don’t get used to it."
"I am still the owner’s daughter."
Qasim immediately bowed.
"Thank you very much!"
"Good."
She smiled with satisfaction.
"Now..."
She crossed her arms.
"Tell me the real reason you came here."
Qasim glanced toward Doran, who was busy organizing artifacts.
"...I wanted Uncle Doran to teach me, since I have an important event soon."
"But he keeps refusing."
Melissa tapped her chin.
"Hmm..."
A mischievous smile slowly spread across her face.
"I have a plan."
