Only I Can Use Every Power System

Chapter 41: Cha.41 After that night

"WHY DIDN’T ANYONE COME?!"

One teacher finally exploded.

"We were dying in there!"

The commander lowered his head.

"...Because the Royal Guards aren’t in the kingdom."

"What?"

"It’s classified."

"I... can’t say more."

Several teachers immediately started shouting.

Before anyone could continue...

Valen walked forward and whispered something into the commander’s ear.

The man’s eyes widened.

"...Sir I’m terribly sorry I didn’t recognize you."

"It’s fine."

Valen folded his arms.

"Now tell us what Happened."

"Well of course sir, just come with me and we will talk in private.

"No, I said us and I mean you tell everyone."

The commander hesitated.

"But sir it’s secrets information..."

Valen puts his hand on the commander shoulder.

"C’mon now, we have been through a lot, just tell us already."

The commander still uncomfortable with this idea but he speaks anyway.

"The Royal Guards were sent outside the kingdom by His Majesty’s direct order..."

"I don’t know where."

"I only heard it involved... supernatural phenomena."

"And the army?"

Valen asked.

The commander looked even more uncomfortable.

"They refused to come."

"...Refused?"

"They said..."

He swallowed.

"...their duty was to defend the kingdom’s borders."

"They used... less polite words than that."

Qasim quietly leaned toward Kevin.

"What’s wrong with the army here?"

Kevin adjusted his glasses.

"They’re the lowest branch of the kingdom’s defense."

"Most are Mahiks who never reached the Second Step."

"Others are criminals... unwanted nobles... or simply people no one wanted."

"They don’t serve because they love the kingdom."

"They serve because the King’s contract forces them to."

"If the King orders them to die..."

"They die."

"Simple and efficient..."

"But that means if the king doesn’t order them, they won’t move a muscle."

Qasim slowly understood.

...

Valen asked the question everyone was thinking.

"Why didn’t the King do anything?"

The commander looked away.

"I truly don’t know."

"The only order we received..."

"...was to deploy the barrier."

"And hold this position until someone stronger arrived."

"For how long?"

"I wasn’t told."

For just a second...

Valen’s expression darkened.

Then it disappeared.

He turned toward the survivors.

"From forty one students, nineteen survived."

"From eight teachers, two survived."

"The guards and the nurse are dead too."

He closed his eyes briefly.

"Please."

"Get everyone home safely."

Then he looked back at the commander.

"You."

"And me."

"We’re going to talk."

...

While officers guided the survivors away...

Different people reacted differently.

"Don’t touch me..."

"I can walk..."

Another student stared blankly ahead.

"My legs..."

"I can’t feel my legs..."

One girl kept whispering to herself.

"I was in hell..."

"I was in hell..."

"I was in hell..."

Qasim quietly looked away.

He saw Verm and Isac sitting together.

Neither of them spoke.

They simply existed beside each other.

Timon had already disappeared without saying a word.

Qasim looked at Kevin.

"So..."

"Where’s your home?"

Kevin smiled awkwardly.

"...The academy."

"I’m not from this kingdom."

"So I don’t have one anymore."

"You could go back."

Kevin’s smile weakened.

"I could."

"...I’d rather not... Family problems."

Qasim blinked.

"So you’re planning to sleep outside?"

"I suppose."

Qasim stared at him.

"...Are you serious?"

Kevin adjust his glasses.

"Yes."

Then at the same time they spoke.

—"I’ve been wondering how to stop homeless people from peeing on me."

—"You’re coming with me."

Qasim looked at him.

"What the hell did you just say?"

"... Nothing." Kevin answers quietly before his eyes lit up.

"Wait did you say I can come with you?"

"Really?"

"Of course."

"Actually... It’s Valen’s place."

"So I have to ask him first if it’s possible to let another kid sleep in his place..."

"Wait... That sounded weird..."

Both of them laughed a weak and tired laugh.

It only lasted a few seconds.

Then silence returned.

Kevin smiled faintly.

"...He’d get mad if we stayed sad forever."

Qasim looked toward the academy again.

"...Yeah."

"He probably would."

...

After receiving Valen’s permission—with the clear condition that Kevin would learn nothing about Black Seed—they quietly left together.

Valen watched them disappear into the distance.

Only after they were gone...

Did he close the commander’s office door.

"Now..."

He looked straight into the man’s eyes.

"Tell me everything."

The commander frowned.

"Sir... I’ve already told you everythi—"

His words stopped.

Valen’s eyes slowly turned white.

Thin silver threads appeared around his fingers.

Invisible to ordinary eyes.

They shot forward.

The commander froze.

"...W-What..."

The silver threads quietly buried themselves beneath his skin.

Valen then start weaving mid air, controlling the silver threads.

"Let’s try again."

...

After 20 minutes Valen left the office, closing the door behind the unconscious body of the commander that was resting on the table with white bubbles floating in his mouth.

...

The next morning...

The kingdom held a funeral.

No speeches.

No music.

Only silence.

Qasim recognized many faces.

The were students with their families come to say the final goodbye to their friends.

Or the teachers who comes to honor their coworkers.

Qasim searched for a single dwarf.

None came.

...

After the funeral ended...

Qasim and Kevin quietly walked back toward the base.

Only after reaching their district...

A familiar voice called out.

"Qasim?"

He turned around.

Melissa stood there in a beautiful dress.

A warm smile spread across her face as she approached.

But the closer she came...

The more that smile faded.

She looked at Qasim.

Then at Kevin.

Then back at Qasim.

"...What happened?"
