"We need to get back and meet up with Team One."
Valen nodded.
"You’re right."
After a while, Team Four, along with Zyra, met up with Team One again. Valen noticed that Team One was missing an elf, and Aluna confirmed that she had stored her inside her summoned spirit along with Broxi while also letting the elf heal from the effects of the sick purple roots.
"That’s also useful... Doran, you should also try getting healed by the summon," Valen told Doran.
"Later... I like to maximize my help in case something happens."
"Alright then, if you feel unwell at any point, just tell me," Aluna assured Doran before asking Valen the important question.
"We still need a mana crystal, and with those monsters around, it won’t be an easy task..."
"I know... But we need to try anyway. Let’s stay together and search for it."
"Um, guys..." Levia suddenly pointed ahead.
Ahead of them, there were some weird noises, slowly getting louder and louder as the tension rose.
"I don’t like this..."
The next moment, the noises became unbearably loud.
One monster appeared in front of them. Its shoulders were covered in mushrooms, shaking aggressively as if they were screaming.
Another monster appeared.
Then another.
Then another.
"Fuck! Run!"
Without wasting any time, they started running, and the monsters ran after them.
Through the tight tunnels and chambers, they ran and ran. They saw more monsters appearing from the ground, from the ceiling. They were everywhere.
Where did they all come from?
If previously the group had the chance to fight, well, now it was either run or die.
There was no screaming. No sound came from those monsters, just silent footsteps and the heavy breathing of the group.
The silence was the special, unspoken horror following them.
Run for your life.
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE.
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!
That was the primordial idea ruling the group’s thoughts.
But everything changed when they found a dead end awaiting them.
A cold chill ran across their bodies.
The monsters slowly closed the distance.
"Fuck it, I’ll distract them. Maybe you can escape."
"What the fuck are you even saying, Doran? They will eat you up in a fraction of a second... It’s over."
Before they could even react, the monsters arrived and launched themselves forward.
The group took their fighting formation in their last desperate attempt to resist, but instead of attacking them, the monsters began aggressively breaking through the wall.
The monsters completely ignored the group and focused on the wall, as if something behind it was driving them crazy.
The group watched in horror as almost fifty monsters collectively broke through the dead end in total silence. If it weren’t for the shattering sound of rocks, the group could have heard their own heartbeats as the monsters finally made a hole in the wall.
One after another, they entered, leaving the group in complete silence.
As the last monster went through the hole, the group remained safe and unhurt, but in total disbelief at what they had just witnessed.
"Let’s get out of here," Zyra whispered, which woke the others from their shock.
"Look... isn’t this..." Levia pointed at something and went to get it.
It was indeed the mana crystal they had been searching for.
The whole situation was weird and difficult to understand, but they didn’t have the luxury to sit around and think about it.
As the crystal shone, the group went to the next chamber, where Doran immediately fell.
Now he looked much older than before. His hair had turned completely white, and his skin was covered with wrinkles.
The others also showed a big jump in their age.
"This one’s effect hits harder... That means we are closer to the center," Valen commented while looking at his hands, analyzing how much further he could push himself.
Aluna stored Doran while the others agreed on staying behind until the next chamber.
"That’s weird..." Selena tilted her head as she looked at a specific person.
"How come you’re not aging?"
The question was directed toward Qasim, who looked exactly the same as before.
Aluna joined Selena’s observation, commenting that he hadn’t changed in the previous chamber either.
Qasim would have loved to tell them why, but he was confused too.
"I... I don’t know."
"Valen, can you analyze his condition and maybe create something that might help?"
"Oh, Aluna, I would love to, but the boy is totally normal when I look at him using my power, so no, I’m afraid I can’t help..."
"I see... Well, either way, it’s good to have someone who doesn’t age as fast as us elves."
"Hmph! He is still human and will age eventually," Selena commented while puffing out her cheeks.
"Alright, everyone, let’s focus on finding the next crystal."
The group stayed together while searching inside the large chamber. Their goal was to find the next mana crystal, but instead, they found something terrifying.
In front of them was a small flesh cocoon, similar to the ones the monsters came from, but much smaller and transparent enough for them to see what was inside.
There was something with a body-like form floating in some nasty liquid, and just by standing in front of it, they felt uncomfortable.
"I think it’s better to leave whatever this is alone..." Valen tried to suggest.
The next moment, they heard the familiar noises echoing across the room.
The group turned back, only to see some monsters blocking their way.
Even without having a face, they could feel the anger coming from them, just like the other monsters that had been breaking the wall.
It was the kind of anger someone feels when another person tries to steal what is theirs.
"Everyone, be careful... Something weird is happening," Zyra spoke while narrowing her eyes.
"These monsters... I might be wrong, but they are the same monsters that attacked me earlier."
