11:05 AM

"Leave the barrier to me! You focus on killing those things!"

Yorness shouted at his team as he felt the poison beginning to take effect.

*Fuck. I was careless. How did I not realize I’d been poisoned? Just when did it happen?*

Yorness desperately tried to remember any moment when he could have been poisoned.

Suddenly, he remembered the white-haired boy from Team Four.

*Did that little brat poison me and then warn me? No... He couldn’t have. He didn’t give me anything to eat or drink, and he wasn’t close enough to poison me through the air.*

He shook his head and considered another possibility.

*Maybe it happened before the mission... by that person.*

He closed his eyes and slowly exhaled as he pictured the suspect.

Then he opened them again.

*Whatever. I need to focus on the mission. If I don’t strengthen the barrier, we’ll fall. I need to remove the mana from my defensive layer and transfer it into the barrier engine.*

As Yorness began transferring his mana from the defensive layer that every Third Step mage possessed, he suddenly felt a bad feeling.

Qasim’s words came back to him.

The same weak boy who had dared to tell him to be careful.

If Yorness had listened to him, perhaps he wouldn’t have been poisoned before the mission had even truly begun.

But who said Yorness’s carelessness would stop there?

As the possibility crossed his mind, Yorness immediately transferred his mana back into his defensive layer.

To his surprise, he sensed something passing through it.

He tried to dodge.

Blood sprayed through the air.

Yorness watched as his left ear was sent flying.

He didn’t care about the pain or the strange dizziness caused by suddenly losing part of his ear.

Instead, his eyes widened.

*That attack...*

He immediately strengthened his defensive layer and began running.

Another attack followed.

This time, it carved a hole through his hand.

But that was enough for Yorness to determine exactly where the attack was coming from.

He looked through the dust hanging in the air and locked eyes with a beastkin with an eagle’s face.

The beastkin was sitting casually on top of one of the guard towers.

"Oh, he’s looking at me~."

The Eagle beastkin, Hamz, whistled when he realized his enemy had finally noticed him.

"Everyone! Go straight to the gate! We’re being sniped!"

Yorness shouted at his team as he finally understood what they were dealing with.

"Death Eye Hamz..."

Yorness gritted his teeth.

"The famous Third Step who managed to kill a beast equivalent to a Fourth Step, saving his kingdom and earning the name ’Death Eye’... The strongest mercenary."

He spat on the ground.

One of his students, however, began trembling in fear after overhearing his captain.

"M-My master... doesn’t that mean he’s as strong as a F-Fourth Step? We have zero chance!"

"Close your damn mouth, coward!"

Yorness snapped.

"No Third Step can truly injure a Fourth Step, let alone kill one. As a matter of fact, it takes nearly fifty Third Steps to kill a single Fourth Step!"

He glared at his student.

"You ignorant brat. You don’t realize how enormous the gap is between the Fourth Step and the Third Step! Hell, even the difference between the First Step and the Third Step is smaller!"

Yorness turned his gaze back toward Hamz and spat again.

"That rumor only says he killed a beast equivalent to a Fourth Step. That means it was far weaker than an actual Fourth Step person."

He narrowed his eyes.

"And to accomplish something like that, he must have used a high-risk binding vow."

Back on top of the tower, Hamz whistled casually as he locked eyes with Yorness.

"Ahh, they’re so lucky they’re a bunch of weak humans."

He sighed.

"I can’t hurt anyone weaker than me... Damn it. That’s why I told them not to send me on this mission."

Hamz jumped from the tower.

While falling, he fired another shot.

One of Yorness’s students was killed instantly.

Hamz landed on the next barrier and smiled.

"Alright. Even though I can’t use my powers, they’ll still die if something sharp pierces their skull fast enough, right?"

"Haha."

But the moment he landed, an electric arrow struck him.

Hamz barely dodged it and almost lost his balance.

"What the hell...?"

He narrowed his eyes.

Below him, Yorness was still maintaining the barrier while simultaneously creating a bow out of electric mana.

"You wanna play, little bird?"

Yorness grinned.

"Fine. Let’s play a game called..."

He created an electric arrow and pulled the bowstring back, aiming directly at Hamz.

"Oh! An archer mage?"

Hamz’s eyes lit up.

"Well, that’s fucking exciting!"

He raised his strange sniper-like weapon and enlarged it with his life energy.

"Fine! Let’s play a game called..."

Both of them stared directly at each other.

Then, at the exact same moment, they finished their sentences in cold voices.

"WHO SHOOTS BETTER WINS!"

"WHO SHOOTS BETTER WINS!"

11:25 AM

Back in the secret passage, Yasmin was tying up Lion, who had just regained consciousness.

Both of them wore cold expressions.

"See, Qasim? You never know what treasures you might find in an activity room inside a prison during a dangerous mission to hunt terrorists."

"Even so, you still need a Maker with you to improve the quality of the rope, right?"

"That’s my boy! You’re finally starting to realize how great Maker is!"

Valen tried to laugh, but he suddenly started coughing up blood.

Qasim immediately became concerned.

"My plan was for all of us to fight the Fox together, but with our current condition..."

Qasim’s expression darkened.

He felt as though his plan had become much harder to accomplish.

He was almost certain the Savior wouldn’t be weaker than Lion.

And they had only defeated Lion because of their preparation, teamwork, and numerical advantage.

*What should I do now...?*

As Qasim sank deeper into his thoughts and worries, he suddenly heard footsteps.

"What’s that?"

Valen immediately became alert when he heard them too.

Yasmin pulled out her daggers while Qasim prepared a fire spell.

They waited.

The footsteps grew closer.

Closer.

And closer.

Until finally—

"Y-You’re all safe! Thank God..."

"Put those damn daggers away, Yasmin. And you, boy, lower your hand too."

Levia and Doran emerged from the shadows.

An old lady followed behind them.

"Levia! Doran! That’s great! You’re fine and—"

The moment Valen looked at the old woman, his eyes widened.

Then he burst into laughter.

"BWAHAHAHA! Is that you? Aurora?!"

"Laugh one more time and I’ll curse you, Valen. I’m warning you."

Valen ignored her warning and continued laughing.

But in the next moment—

BAM!

Aurora struck him hard on the head.

"AGH! We’re already injured, and you start attacking us?!"

"I hit only you."

Aurora crossed her arms.

"And don’t worry. I brought some healing potions."

Valen’s eyes widened.

Then a wicked smile appeared on his face.

"You know, I’m always thankful to have such a beautiful and caring old lady with us."

The passage was immediately filled with the sounds of punches and screams.
