Qasim stared at his captain for a moment.
He searched Valen’s face for any hint of a lie.
Some sign that this was all a misunderstanding.
A prank.
Anything.
But he found nothing.
Valen’s eyes were cold and distant.
Qasim slowly lowered his gaze.
"How...?"
Valen gently patted Qasim’s shoulder before turning around and locking the door.
"Remember when the Fox pierced my chest?"
He paused, searching for the right words.
"He hit a major part of my heart. That was the moment I died. I took my last breath..."
Valen looked down at his hands.
"But suddenly, the revival mechanism activated, and I came back to life."
He gave a faint, bitter smile.
"Well... kind of."
Valen turned back and touched his shoulder.
"The idea behind the ability I created was to revive Nasun’s soul inside my body. But because I hadn’t fulfilled most of the conditions I had set, it failed."
His fingers pressed against the rotten flesh.
"Instead, it reanimated my body temporarily."
Valen slid a finger into his shoulder and pulled out a small piece of rotten flesh.
Qasim’s face paled.
"I probably have one more week at most before my entire body decays."
Valen looked at the piece of flesh between his fingers.
"In fact, it’s already started."
Qasim swallowed.
"How can we fix it?"
His voice trembled.
"Maybe Aurora can help you!"
"It’s impossible."
Valen simply shook his head.
"How can you know that without even trying?"
Valen looked up at the ceiling.
"Because this body has no soul."
He paused.
"What I am right now is just a bag of rotten flesh waiting to stop moving."
Qasim’s eyes widened.
"Maybe my soul is trapped somewhere in this world..."
Valen’s voice became quieter.
"Unable to pass on until this body finally collapses."
Qasim blinked several times.
His eyebrows drew together as his expression twisted with sadness.
"Why did you even do all this?"
"For revenge."
Valen answered without hesitation.
Qasim stood there with his mouth slightly open.
"Nasun and the old Team Four were talented people. They always completed their missions. The other teams respected them."
Valen looked down at his hand.
"They were... heroes."
His fingers slowly curled.
"But something happened."
"They discovered a strange case. I don’t know what it was, but they devoted all their time and effort to solving it."
"And when they finally did..."
Valen’s expression darkened.
"Things started changing."
"Suddenly, they became more cautious. More afraid of the people around them."
"I didn’t think much of it at first. They had always managed to overcome whatever they encountered."
He clenched his fist.
"I was wrong."
"The next thing I heard was that they had become fugitives. They had apparently tried to assassinate the king."
"They were found inside the king’s room, so they were hunted down."
Valen closed his eyes.
"From that day on, I never heard from Nasun or the others again."
"Until I confirmed that they were dead."
He opened his eyes.
"So, to get my revenge, I had to—"
"That’s all?!"
Qasim slammed his hand against the desk.
His voice was filled with anger.
"You risked your life for a meaningless revenge?!"
"Against who, exactly?! The king? Yorness?!"
"That’s stupid!"
Valen’s eyes narrowed.
"You don’t know what it means to lose everything."
His voice hardened.
"The people who took me in and raised me when I had no one..."
"They’re dead."
His jaw tightened.
"They fucking killed them."
Qasim stared at him.
"Did Nasun ask you to get revenge?"
Valen froze.
"Did he tell you to throw your life away like this?"
"Even if the revival had worked exactly as you intended, you still wasted your time and resources on it instead of making yourself stronger!"
Qasim shook his head in disappointment.
"Back in the last mission, if you had been stronger, you wouldn’t have died in the first place."
"But you were wasting your time on this instead!"
Valen’s eye twitched.
The boy was getting on his nerves.
"As I said, boy, you don’t know what it means to lose everything you once had."
"You don’t even remember who you are."
"So don’t judge me when you don’t know what sacrifices I made to become the one searching for the truth..."
"The one who will deliver justice—"
"Bullshit!"
Qasim cut him off.
He stepped closer.
"This isn’t about justice, Valen!"
"It’s about you!"
"Your selfishness!"
Valen’s expression changed.
Qasim’s voice began to tremble.
"Back during the last mission, I did something terrible. I made a stupid choice and convinced myself that I was the hero."
"But you know what the person closest to my heart told me?"
Qasim remembered Valen’s own words from that day.
"You think you’re some sort of hero? You think everything is going to be fixed after your revenge?"
"Wake up to reality, Valen! This is real life!"
Valen listened with an irritated expression.
Then he suddenly stepped forward and grabbed Qasim by the collar.
"Shut—"
He stopped.
His eyes fell on Qasim’s face.
Tears were gathering in the boy’s eyes.
"Why, Valen...?"
Qasim’s voice cracked.
"Why did you do this?"
"Why didn’t you just rebuild what you lost?"
"Why not make something new?"
His grip loosened.
"Why not just be happy with us?"
Valen opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
He stared at Qasim.
Something began to ache deep inside his chest.
And then...
It broke.
Qasim dropped to his knees, his head hanging toward the floor as he desperately tried to hold back his tears.
Valen stared at him, eyes wide.
Then he took a step backward.
His back hit the wall.
He slowly slid down until he was sitting on the floor, covering his face with both hands.
Neither of them spoke.
The room fell silent.
Minutes passed.
Finally, Valen spoke.
"I know..."
Qasim slowly raised his head.
"I know I messed up."
"I know I should have abandoned this whole revenge thing."
Valen lowered his hands.
Tears ran down his face.
"But when I finally realized that..."
He gave a broken laugh.
"It was already too late."
"At first, I only cared about revenge. I thought I could dedicate my entire life to it."
"But as time passed..."
His voice trembled.
"I started enjoying being with Levia and Doran."
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"And then Yasmin came along, and things became even more fun."
His smile grew for a moment.
Then it broke.
"Then you came..."
"I..."
Valen struggled to continue.
"I love this place."
"I love being part of this team."
His gaze dropped.
"But I was already too deep."
"Like a swamp I willingly walked into."
"I kept looking at all of you and wondering..."
"Can I really belong with them?"
His voice became quieter.
"Can I really stay with you guys while carrying this much hatred in my heart?"
Valen covered his eyes again.
"I didn’t know what to do."
"So I just kept moving forward."
"I kept ignoring the part of me that missed having a place I could call home..."
"A place with people I love."
He suddenly slammed his fist against the wall.
Qasim flinched.
Valen lowered his head.
The cheerful captain who was always joking around...
The man who always helped them...
The person who constantly gave Qasim confidence...
Was gone.
In front of him was someone completely different.
Someone powerless.
Vulnerable.
Like a child who couldn’t even understand how he had ended up losing everything around him.
Qasim understood that feeling.
He had once felt the same way in that hospital room.
Unable to understand how his life had become so hopeless.
Unable to see a way forward.
Qasim could no longer contain himself.
He broke down on the floor.
His chest hurt.
Tears filled his eyes as every breath came out broken and uneven.
He cried because he finally understood.
He had lost the most important person to him.
Not to a monster.
Not to a terrorist.
Not even to a villain.
He had lost his captain to a man named Valen...
A man who had chosen a painful path and walked down it alone in search.
A man who now regrets his path... But it’s already too late.
That man is already dead.
