Oops… I Went Into Heat and My Alpha Daddies Claimed Me
Chapter 223: ANOTHER TARGETKeisha’s POV
Dane didn’t answer immediately. His eyes dropped briefly to the bandage around his shoulder before he pulled the chair closer to the bed and sat down.
Why did he look so tense? Immediately I started to think the worst, wondering if something terrible had happened outside the hospital.
There was nothing to suggest an attack from. Duskfen. So where had that injury come from?
I looked at his arm again. "First, what happened to your shoulder?"
"It’s fine." He shrugged.
"Dane."
He sighed and carefully moved his arm, rotating his shoulder enough to show me that he could move it without much difficulty. "See? It’s not serious. I got hit while I was chasing the assassin. They treated it and wrapped it. That’s all."
I watched the movement before settling back against the pillow. "You’re sure?"
"Yes."
"Good." I paused, studying his face. "Now why do you look like that?"
"Like what?" He raised a brow.
I frowned. "You know what I mean."
Dane looked toward the door before returning his attention to me. "How are you feeling?"
"I’m fine. Nothing wrong." I assured him.
He nodded, but he still didn’t look comfortable. I waited for him to say whatever he had come to say. When he didn’t, I glanced toward the door. "Nadia should have been back by now."
Dane’s expression shifted and my stomach tightened.
"She went to get food," I told him. "And some herbs. She’s been gone for a while."
"I know that."
I looked at him properly then. "How do you know?"
Dane rubbed his good hand over his face, clearly reluctant to continue. "A guard came in a few minutes ago. He was looking for me."
That made me frown. "Why?"
"He told me Nadia had been taken to another hospital."
For a second, I simply stared at him. "What?"
Dane met my eyes. "Nadia collapsed while she was cooking. She lost consciousness, and they took her to the hospital."
I shook my head immediately. "No. That doesn’t make sense. She was just here. She left less than an hour ago."
"Look—" He tried to say, but I wasn’t listening.
My head was spinning and I felt like I was going to be sick. She was just right here. How could it be possible that something had happened to her? It made no sense. This had to be some sort of cruel joke.
Diane was quiet in my head. I needed her to tell me she felt the same. That she could tell this was a prank. But she remained quiet.
My voice rose. "She was going to get food."
"I know, Keisha." The way he said my name finally made me stop arguing.
Oh fuck. He wasn’t kidding. The look on his face was exasperated. Like he wasn’t sure how to explain any of this to me.
My head was spinning and I could feel the thoughts running through my head.
I pushed myself upright despite the discomfort. "Where is she?"
"Another hospital." He said slowly.
My voice cracked and I resisted the urge to burst into tears. "Why? Why not this one?"
"Her condition was more serious than yours, so they transferred her to a larger facility."
I stared at him, still trying to make the information fit with what I remembered. Nadia had been standing beside my bed only a short while ago, complaining about how long I’d slept and telling me she was going to find food. She hadn’t looked sick. She hadn’t complained about feeling strange. She’d simply left. "What happened to her?"
Dane hesitated again and I could feel my heart thumping like crazy in my chest.
"Tell me." I pressed.
"They think she was poisoned." He finally said.
My mouth went dry. "Poisoned?"
"Apparently maybe wolfsbane? Maybe the tea she took."
My stomach dropped and panic gripped me. "She said she was going to make tea."
I couldn’t understand it. She’d been preparing something because she thought it would help me.
She said she wanted to make tea for me. If it was wolfbane, it would mean she just made it recently for it to have affected her now. Was it mine?
Was this some sort of mistake where I was the target and she just happened to be on the wrong side?
"Why would she even drink it?" I asked. "She was making it for me."
"Maybe she tasted it first."
I pushed the blanket aside, preparing to get out of bed. "I need to see her."
Dane immediately stood. "You can’t."
"I’m going." I shook my head.
His hand clamped down hard on my shoulder
"Keisha, no."
What was wrong with him? She had stayed with me all through until when I had woken up. And he didn’t want me to go see her? When she had been poisoned? I didn’t even know the state she was in right now.
"She’s my friend." I struggled with his grip. "Let go!"
"And you’re still recovering. You can’t just walk out of here." He tried to explain, his voice soft and filled with a plea.
I looked at him sharply. "She’s been poisoned, Dane."
He threw his hands up. "And that’s exactly why you can’t go running across the pack looking for her. She’s already being treated."
I stared at him, ignoring the ache in my legs.
Dane watched me for a moment before speaking more quietly. "They’re investigating what happened."
I looked at him. "Are you kidding me?"
He sighed. "That’s what they told me. They’ll find out where the poison came from and who was responsible."
I lowered my gaze. "Of course they will."
Dane frowned, looking confused by my answer. "What does that mean?"
I stared up at him. "It means that sentence is old."
He said nothing.
I looked back at him, my voice quieter now. "Every time something happens, they investigate. And we never get the answer."
Before he could talk, I cut him off." Don’t you get it? Whatever we investigate... We’ll never find an answer."
