Chapter 157: Chapter

Wenzhe sat completely still, his chest heaving under the dark, loose robe. The smell of cold air and raw blood filled the small space between them.

"You saw them?" Wenzhe asked, his raspy voice dropping low. A bitter, cold laugh escaped his throat. "All twelve of them. And what do you want me to say, Yueqing? That I sat here late at night writing letters to my wife while she was living comfortably under another man’s roof?"

[He thinks I ignored him...] Yueqing’s thoughts echoed softly inside his head, clear and ringing in the quiet tent. [He thinks I just threw his letters away while staying with Xiao Chen.]

"I didn’t ignore them," Yueqing said aloud, her voice trembling slightly. "I never received a single one, Wenzhe. I didn’t even know you were writing to me."

"How could you receive them?!" Wenzhe suddenly snapped, his dark eyes flashing with anger as he leaned forward. "How could you see any of my letters when you were off with another man for an entire month? While I was fighting at the border, writing to an empty house, you were standing beside Xiao Chen!"

"I was trying to solve a conflict!" Yueqing argued back, her hands clenching into fists. "I didn’t stay there because I wanted to be with him! I stayed to stop a mess before it destroyed both of you!"

"You stayed with the Third Prince," Wenzhe repeated coldly, cutting her off. "That is all that matters."

Jaw set in anger, Wenzhe turned his back on her. He pulled the dark robe off his shoulder, wincing sharply in pain, and picked up the damp cloth from the washbasin. His hand shook as he tried to wipe the deep, bleeding gash on his own chest, completely ignoring her presence.

Seeing him struggle, Yueqing took three deliberate steps forward. "Let me help you."

"Don’t touch me!" Wenzhe shouted, shoving her hands away. Water splashed over the edge of the basin as he glared up at her, his chest heaving. "Go back to your tent, Lady Sue."

"Stop it!" Yueqing shouted back, her patience snapping as hot tears flooded her eyes. She shoved his hand away with all her strength. "Stop acting like this! Stop acting like I actually matter to you!"

"You do matter!" Wenzhe yelled, his hand shooting out to grab her wrist, pulling her close.

"No, I don’t!" Yueqing cried out, pushing against his chest and backing away as tears streamed down her cheeks. "You’re not supposed to care about me! You’re supposed to love Li Mei... That’s not how it’s supposed to be!"

Wenzhe went completely silent. He dropped his hand, sitting frozen in his chair as he watched her shoulders shake in the dim light.

[Why is he looking at me like that?] her mind cried out inside his head, terrified and confused. [He’s supposed to marry her. He’s supposed to divorce me.]

Wenzhe slowly let out a long, heavy breath, his bloodshot eyes fixed on her face.

"When I first met Li Mei... my heart skipped a beat," Wenzhe spoke softly, his voice devoid of any anger. "I fell for her eyes, her beauty, and her character. I spent my whole life on the battlefield, in military training, fighting wars. I never really knew what love was supposed to be."

He looked right into her tear-stained eyes.

"After I married you, I already had everything planned out," Wenzhe continued quietly. "I thought I would marry Li Mei, bring her into the estate, and divorce you later. But..."

"But what?!" Yueqing shouted, her voice breaking as she wiped another tear. "What happened to that plan?!"

Wenzhe looked at her, his eyes completely soft, stripped of all his usual coldness.

"My heart skipped again."

The words hung in the quiet tent, so soft they almost got lost in the flickering lamp light.

Yueqing froze. Her breath caught in her throat, tears continuing to fall down her pale face.

[What did he just say...?] Her mind cried out, the voice echoing inside his head like a panicked murmur. [No... that’s impossible. He’s cold. He doesn’t say things like this...]

Wenzhe slowly stood up from his chair. He didn’t care about the open robe slipping off his shoulders or the blood trickling down his chest. He took a slow step toward her.

For the first time, the scary general looked completely broken.

His bloodshot eyes were filled with pain. As he looked down at her, a single tear fell from his eye, rolling down his dirty cheek.

"Is it even possible..." Wenzhe whispered, his raspy voice breaking, "...for a man’s heart to skip twice?"

Yueqing backed away until her back hit the wooden map table. She shook her head, pushing against his chest to keep him away.

"Don’t say that," she sobbed, wiping her face. "Don’t say things like that, Wenzhe! You’re making a mistake!"

[He’s not supposed to love me,] her thoughts screamed inside his head, scared and frantic.

Wenzhe didn’t pull away from her hands on his bare chest. Instead, his big hand wrapped gently over hers, feeling her rapid heartbeat.

"I tried to hate you," Wenzhe said softly, another tear falling as he looked into her eyes. "I listened to all the rumors about the woman I was marrying and how she was spoilt brat who only knows how to hurt the innocent and abuse her power.. but compared to the woman I married you were nothing like those rumors."

"You weren’t cruel," Wenzhe continued quietly, his rough thumb lightly stroking the back of her trembling hand. "You were strange. You were clever. And compared to the woman in those rumors, you were nothing like what they said."

A faint, soft look entered his bloodshot eyes as he held her gaze, his raspy voice dropping into a gentle tone.

"I watched you, Yueqing," he whispered. "I saw how you got so excited out of nowhere over the smallest things... how your face completely changed whenever there were sweet cakes and snacks around. I saw how you always tried to act tough and act like a bully toward others, but in reality, you were the one with the most fragile heart."

Yueqing’s breath caught in her throat, her chest heaving as tears continued to fall down her cheeks.

[Stop... please, just stop,] her thoughts wept softly inside his head, scared and overwhelmed. [Don’t say these things...]

Wenzhe heard her mental plea, but he didn’t pull back. He gently tightened his grip on her hand.

"You always meant well for people, even when you tried to hide it," Wenzhe said, his voice raw with emotion. "You saved my younger brother. You helped cure him when no one else could, and you’ve done so many other kind things while pretending you didn’t care at all."

He took a step closer, his bare chest warm against her trembling hands as he looked down at her.

"I like everything about you," he confessed softly. "I like the way you challenge me. I like the way you’re so transparent ... and I like the way your body shivers and responds to my very touch, no matter how much you try to fight it."

Yueqing let out a broken gasp, her hands shaking violently beneath his grip.

[He loves me...]

Wenzhe continued, a fresh tear slipping down his cheek. "And when I marched to the border, I wrote those letters because I was terrified I would die in this snow without you ever knowing... that the man who planned to divorce you had fallen completely, helplessly in love with you."

He rested his forehead gently against hers, his warm breath fanning over her cold skin in the quiet tent.

"So tell me, Yueqing," he whispered against her lips. "How am I supposed to stop now?"
