Chapter 158: Chapter
Wenzhe leaned down further, his dark, bloodshot eyes fixed on her trembling lips as he closed the small distance between them to kiss her.
Panic flared in Yueqing’s chest. She jerked her face away at the last second, turning her head so his lips only brushed the cold, wet skin of her cheek.
"No!" Yueqing cried out, pushing against his wounded chest with both hands as fresh tears spilled over her lashes. "No, Wenzhe, stop! This is not what’s supposed to happen!"
Wenzhe froze, his breath warm against her jaw, his hand still holding hers tightly.
[No, no, no...] her thoughts screamed wildly inside his head, sharp, terrified, and frantic. [This is all wrong! The system... the plot... everything is completely ruined!]
"Yueqing—"
"I’m supposed to die in your hands!" Yueqing shouted, her voice breaking violently in the quiet tent. "That’s how this mission is supposed to end! You were supposed to hate me, Wenzhe! You were supposed to execute me, or hand me over, or cut me down yourself!"
Wenzhe’s eyes widened in total shock. His bloodshot gaze locked onto hers, completely stunned by her broken confession.
"What are you talking about?" Wenzhe whispered, his raspy voice shaking. "Die in my hands? What mission?"
[I was supposed to provoke you until you killed me so I could finally go home!] her thoughts sobbed inside his mind, raw, chaotic, and completely exposed. [I’m not supposed to stay here! I’m not supposed to make you fall for me!]
Yueqing shoved him again with all the strength left in her shaking body, backing up until her waist hit the edge of the wooden map table. She wiped her wet face with the back of her sleeve, her shoulders trembling violently.
"You can’t be in love with me," Yueqing wept, looking at him with desperate, terrified eyes. "I can’t let you!"
"I hate you!" Yueqing shouted, her voice breaking in the small, quiet tent. Tears streamed endlessly down her face as she backed away from him. "You are a monster!"
Wenzhe stood completely still, his chest rising and falling heavily. The dark robe hung loosely off his bare, bleeding shoulders. Her harsh words hit him hard, but it was what she said next that made his jaw tighten.
"After everything you did to the Third Prince... how do I even know you aren’t lying to me right now?" Yueqing cried, her hands clenching into fists as she sobbed. "How do I know this isn’t just a game? How do I know you’re not just pretending to love me?!"
The moment she mentioned the Third Prince, the softness in Wenzhe’s face vanished.
The warm, broken look in his bloodshot eyes shattered into pure ice. All the gentle love he had just shown completely disappeared, replaced by a dark, dangerous glare.
He took a slow, heavy step toward her, his raspy voice dropping into a low tone that made her heart freeze.
"What did he tell you?" Wenzhe asked.
Yueqing’s breath hitched at the sudden, terrifying shift in his aura. The loving husband who had just wept before her was completely gone, replaced once again by the ruthless General of the Northern Border.
[He’s so scary...] her thoughts trembled inside his head, a wave of cold fear crashing over her. [The moment Xiao Chen’s name comes up, he turns into a completely different person.]
"Answer me, Yueqing," Wenzhe demanded, his raspy voice dangerously calm as he closed the distance between them. He stopped right in front of her, his tall frame towering over her small body. "What did Xiao Chen tell you during that month you stayed in his manor?"
Yueqing squeezed her eyes shut, hot tears spilling over her lashes as she shook her head. "He told me how you destroyed his family! He told me how you framed him, how you chased him out of the capital, and how you used your army to wipe out everyone who stood by him!"
Wenzhe’s bloodshot eyes narrowed into sharp, dark slits.
[He made himself look like a victim to her,] Wenzhe’s mind roared, a bitter, lethal rage surging through his blood. [He used his own mother’s pity to turn her against me!]
"And you believed him?" Wenzhe asked softly, though the edge in his voice could cut through iron. "You lived with me. You slept in my home. Yet you chose to believe the words of a prince who would burn the entire kingdom just to sit on the throne?"
"Why shouldn’t I believe him?!" Yueqing shouted back, opening her eyes to glare through her tears. "Look at you right now! You’re cold, you’re cruel, and you keep secrets from everyone! How am I supposed to trust a man who lied about his own heart for months?!"
[I can’t trust him...] her mind sobbed inside his head, frantic and broken. [I can’t fall for him. If I fall for him, I’ll never be able to finish this mission. I’ll never be able to leave!]
Wenzhe reached out, his large, calloused hand gripping her jaw gently but firmly, forcing her to look directly into his dark, bloodshot eyes.
"Xiao Chen is a snake, Yueqing," Wenzhe whispered, his breath hot against her face, his thumb softly wiping away a stray tear on her cheek despite his harsh tone. "He told you half-truths to make you hate me. But no matter what lies he fed you... I have never lied to you about how I feel."
He leaned down, his voice dropping into a deep, possessive murmur right against her ear.
"You can hate me all you want. You can call me a monster. But I am never letting you die in my hands, and I am never letting you go back to him."
Wenzhe pulled her closer, his strong arm wrapping around her waist to lock her against his chest.
Yueqing’s eyes widened in sheer panic. Using all the strength left in her trembling body, she shoved her hands against his bare chest, pulled her right hand back, and brought it down hard across his cheek.
CLACK!
The sharp slap echoed violently inside the quiet tent.
Wenzhe’s head snapped to the side. The dark robe slipped lower off his shoulder, and the raw wound on his chest split further, oozing fresh red blood down his skin. He didn’t say a word. He just stood there, his jaw clenched tight, slowly turning his face back to look at her. His cheek was bright red, but his bloodshot eyes were completely pitch-black.
"I want a divorce!" Yueqing screamed at him, her voice cracking as fresh tears poured down her cheeks.
She backed away until her heels hit the edge of the wooden map table, her shoulders shaking with heavy, angry sobs.
"I refuse to stay married to a monster!" she yelled, pointing a shaking finger at his face. "I refuse to be married to a man who is ready to betray his own friend just for a stupid title!"
[I can’t do this anymore...] her thoughts cried out inside his head, sharp, broken, and terrified. [He betrayed Xiao Chen. He lied to everyone. If I stay with him, I’ll lose my mind. I need to leave. I need to get out of this place!]
Wenzhe stood completely frozen in the middle of the tent.
Hearing her scream for a divorce while her internal thoughts begged to escape him felt far worse than the slap across his face. The red mark on his cheek burned, but the dark, icy silence that settled over him was terrifying.
He slowly reached up, touching his fingers to his swollen cheek, his bloodshot eyes fixed on her tear-stained face.
"A divorce?" Wenzhe asked, his raspy voice dropping into a whisper so quiet and cold it made the hair on her neck stand up.
