Chapter 159: Chapter

The cold silence in the room felt heavy.

Wenzhe stared at Yueqing, his red eyes completely blank. A bright red slap mark stood out on his pale cheek, but he didn’t say a word.

[He’s going to snap,] she thought in a panic, her thoughts echoing inside his mind. [Look at his eyes... he looks completely dead inside.]

Wenzhe slowly lowered his hand and took a heavy breath. Dark blood dripped from his torn chest wound, staining his loose robe.

"A divorce," he repeated softly. His raspy voice held no anger, warmth, or emotion at all.

He didn’t yell or move toward her. He simply walked to his heavy desk, unrolled a clean piece of white paper, and picked up a brush.

Yueqing gasped, watching through her tears as he dipped the brush into black ink.

[Is he really writing it?] her mind whispered to him. Her chest ached with sudden pain. [Just like that? He’s actually divorcing me?]

"Isn’t this what you wanted?" Wenzhe asked calmly, his brush moving quickly across the paper. "You came to the border, called me a monster, slapped me, and said I betrayed my friend for power. You said you could never love me."

He looked up, staring directly into her eyes with a freezing, lifeless gaze.

"I will write the divorce letter right now," he said. "You can take it and go back to Xiao Chen."

Yueqing couldn’t speak. Her heart pounded as tears ran down her face.

Suddenly, Wenzhe stopped writing. A drop of black ink fell, staining the paper. He set the brush down, picked up the sheet, and tore it right in half.

CRACK.

Yueqing flinched. Wenzhe threw the torn paper into the small fire next to his desk, where it quickly burned to ash.

He stood up, towering over her in the dim light.

"I told myself I would let you go if you asked," he whispered softly. "I told myself I wouldn’t force you to stay if you hated me."

He walked closer, stopping right in front of her. He smelled of cold air and fresh blood.

"But I lied," he murmured, leaning down close to her face. "You called me a monster and said I was cruel."

He gently lifted her chin with his rough fingers so she had to look at him.

"So why should I act like a good person now?" he whispered with a sad look in his eyes. "I am not divorcing you. Not today, not tomorrow, and not when this war ends. If I am a monster to you... then you will stay right here with your monster."

He pulled his hand back and stepped into the shadows. Pulling his robe tight to hide his bleeding wound, his face became cold and blank again.

"Go back to your tent," he ordered flatly. "And tell Lu Yue to pack your things."

Yueqing wiped her tears, her voice shaking. "What?"

[Is he sending me away?] her thoughts echoed inside his head, full of hurt and confusion. [He’s throwing me out?]

Wenzhe turned his back to her and picked up a wooden map, gripping it so tightly his knuckles turned white. Hearing her confused thoughts hurt him deeply, but he kept his expression cold.

"The border isn’t safe, and the army moves north tomorrow," Wenzhe said harshly. "Guards will take you back to the Xi family manor tomorrow morning. You will stay inside the house, under guard, where you belong."

"Wenzhe—"

"Leave," he interrupted coldly, refusing to look back at her. "I have a war to fight, Lady Sue."

Yueqing stood silently for a moment, her chest heavy with pain. Without another word, she wrapped her coat tightly around herself and walked out into the freezing wind.

The tent door closed, cutting off the sound of Yueqing’s steps in the cold wind.

The room became completely quiet.

Wenzhe sat still at his desk, his face blank and expressionless. His cheek still stung from her slap, and fresh blood soaked his bandages, but he didn’t make a sound as he pressed a cloth to his chest.

Dong Li stepped inside, brushing snow off his armor. He saw the bloody water, the ashes in the fire, and the red mark on Wenzhe’s face. He quickly bowed.

"Young Master," Dong Li said quietly. "I saw Lady Yueqing walking back to her tent."

Wenzhe kept his eyes on his desk. "Set up a guard unit for tomorrow morning. Have them take her back to the Xi estate at sunrise."

Dong Li looked surprised by how calm he sounded. "At sunrise? You aren’t keeping her here at camp?"

"No," Wenzhe said evenly. "It isn’t safe for her here. Xiao Chen filled her head with lies while she stayed with him. He wants to use her against me, but I won’t let her become his tool."

Dong Li’s eyes widened. "The Third Prince lied to her about you?"

"It doesn’t matter what he said," Wenzhe replied coldly, quickly tying his bandage tight. "She believes him, and I can’t change her mind right now. Just make sure the guards keep her safe on the road, and lock down the house when she arrives. She must not leave."

"Understood, Young Master," Dong Li said, bowing low. "I will set up the guard detail right away."

"You are dismissed," Wenzhe said, looking back at the map on his table. His voice was hard as iron, showing he was done talking.

Yueqing pushed open her tent door and stumbled inside, shutting out the freezing wind. She collapsed onto her small wooden bed, her hands shaking as she pulled off her fur coat.

Covering her face, she finally broke down and cried.

A quiet sob escaped her throat as her shoulders shook in the dim room. Her mind was a total mess. Wenzhe’s soft, broken words echoed in her head, completely clashing with the bad things Xiao Chen had told her about him.

[How did everything go so wrong?] she cried in her thoughts. [He wasn’t supposed to look at me like that. He wasn’t supposed to care about me! He’s supposed to love Li Mei!]

A soft chime rang inside her head.

[System 009: Host... please calm down. Your heart is beating too fast.]

[Calm down?!] Yueqing sobbed, wiping her wet face with her sleeves. [Nine, he cried! Wenzhe actually cried in front of me! He looked so broken, and I slapped him... I called him a monster...]

[System 009: Host, remember your past missions. Have you forgotten what happened the last time you fell in love with a story character?]

Yueqing froze, her breath catching as a terrible memory rushed back.

[System 009: In World 3, you fell for your target. You lowered your guard, believed his sweet promises, and forgot you were just a visitor. How did that end for you?]

A sharp pain shot through Yueqing’s chest as she remembered the cold sword, the cruel betrayal, and the painful truth that to the people in these worlds, she was just a pawn.

[System 009: You died in pain because you mistook story lines for real love. You promised yourself you would never confuse a target’s feelings for real love again. If you get attached to Xi Wenzhe, you will fail this mission, and you will die here forever.]

Yueqing closed her eyes, letting out a shaky breath as the System’s harsh reminder brought her back to reality.

[I know...] she thought softly, her tears slowly stopping. [I know, Nine. He’s just a character in a book... and I have to go home.]

[System 009: Exactly, Host. So let Xi Wenzhe and Xiao Chen deal with their own war. Their political games and personal hatred have nothing to do with your real goal.]

Yueqing pulled her knees tightly against her chest, staring blankly at the dim lantern light flickering on the canvas wall.

[System 009: Your main objective has not changed. You do not need to figure out who is lying, who is good, or who truly loves who. You only need to make Xi Wenzhe hate you enough to kill you. That is the only way you complete this mission and return to your own world.]

[Make him kill me...] Yueqing repeated in her mind, her voice hollow. [Even after everything he just said?]

[System 009: Yes. He said he won’t give you a divorce, but anger and betrayal will build up over time. When he sends you back to the Xi estate tomorrow, use that time wisely. Stop worrying about Xiao Chen’s schemes or Wenzhe’s broken heart. Push his limits until he snaps and strikes you down.]

Yueqing took a deep, steadying breath and slowly wiped the remaining tear tracks from her pale face. The painful ache in her chest was still there, but her mind began to clear.

[You’re right, Nine,] she thought, her expression hardening as she stared at her reflection in the small washbasin. [I can’t afford to be soft. I will go back to the estate, play my part, and let Wenzhe finish this story himself.]
