Chapter 163: Chapter

The loud sound of horse hooves broke the quiet night.

Wenzhe rode into the clearing, pulling his horse to a sudden stop in the deep snow. Dong Li and his men stopped right behind him.

Wenzhe jumped off his horse immediately. His face was very pale, and fresh blood soaked through his heavy clothes. But he ignored the pain and walked straight into the camp.

"General!" Commander Gao shouted, falling to his knees in the snow. "General Wenzhe!"

Lu Yue looked up, her face wet with tears and pale with fear as she saw him.

Wenzhe did not look at the broken carriage or the dead enemies on the ground. He looked straight at Commander Gao.

"Where is she?" Wenzhe asked. His voice was low and quiet, but very scary.

Commander Gao bowed his head all the way to the frozen ground. "We were attacked, General... Madam Yueqing ran into the trees to hide from the arrows. She... she slipped on the ice and fell off the edge."

Everything went completely quiet.

Wenzhe froze. All the color left his face. "Fell where?"

Lu Yue pointed a shaking hand toward the dark cliff at the edge of the woods. "Down there, General... She fell down the steep hill. The snow came so fast... we cannot find her."

Wenzhe did not wait a single second.

He grabbed a burning torch from a guard’s hand and walked fast toward the edge of the cliff. Dong Li ran forward to stop him. "Young Master, wait! It is pitch black, and the storm is too dangerous! The hill is pure ice—"

"Get out of my way!" Wenzhe shouted, pushing Dong Li aside.

He stood right at the sharp edge of the cliff, looking down into the deep, dark trees where the snow was falling heavy and fast.

"Yueqing!" Wenzhe screamed down into the dark valley, his chest rising and falling as his blood dripped onto the white snow. "Yueqing!"

Only the cold wind answered him.

Before Wenzhe could step over the icy edge of the cliff, the sound of more horses thundered through the mountain pass. Torchlight flooded the forest path as a massive group of imperial riders burst into the clearing.

At the front rode the Third Prince, Xiao Chen.

Xiao Chen jumped down from his horse with quick movements. Over his arm, he carried a heavy velvet bundle tightly wrapped against the cold. His face was tight with worry and panic.

His eyes swept over the bloody snow and landed directly on Wenzhe.

"Where is she?" Xiao Chen demanded, marching straight toward the cliff.

Wenzhe’s head snapped toward him, his dark eyes flashing with anger. He took a heavy step forward, blocking Xiao Chen’s path. "What are you doing here, Xiao Chen?"

"I came to save Yueqing," Xiao Chen said coldly, holding the heavy bundle close. "I brought medicine, clean bandages, and thick furs for her. Where is she?"

Wenzhe let out a dark, bitter laugh, his hand gripping his sword hilt until his knuckles turned white. "You think you can play the hero? She is in this danger because of you!"

"Because of me?" Xiao Chen snapped back, stepping right up to Wenzhe. "If you didn’t send her back to the capital, she would be safe at the borders! But you couldn’t keep your jealousy in check!"

Rage exploded inside Wenzhe. He lunged forward and grabbed Xiao Chen tightly by the collar, pulling the prince close.

"You dare take my wife and keep her for one whole month?!" Wenzhe roared, his voice trembling with fury as blood soaked further through his robes. "How dare you stand there and talk to me?!"

Xiao Chen didn’t flinch, glaring right back into Wenzhe’s eyes. "She came to me because she was bored.. you went to war leaving her all alone.. what did you expect her to do.. lazy around all day waiting for your ass!? And look what happened the moment you tried to force her away!"

"Silence!" Wenzhe hissed, his grip tightening on Xiao Chen’s clothes.

"Every second we waste arguing here, Yueqing is freezing to death at the bottom of that valley," Xiao Chen said, his tone dropping to a sharp whisper. "If you care about her life, let us find her!"

Dong Li rushed between them. "Young Master, Your Highness! Please! The snow is covering everything! We must search now!"

Wenzhe glared at Xiao Chen for one last dark second before shoving him away. Time was running out, and the cold was getting worse.

Without saying another word, Wenzhe grabbed a thick rope from Dong Li, turned around, and climbed right over the icy edge of the cliff into the dark valley.

Xiao Chen handed his heavy bundle to his lead guard, drew his sword to clear the ice, and went down the slope right behind him.

The cold wind on the mountain quickly turned into a terrifying snowstorm. White snow blew everywhere, making it impossible to see where they were going.

"We have to go lower down the hill!" Wenzhe shouted over the roaring wind, pushing through the knee-deep snow.

Right next to him, Xiao Chen walked through the storm, holding his heavy velvet bundle tightly against his chest. "You are going the wrong way! The hill goes east—she would have slid toward the rocks!"

"I know this land better than you, Prince!" Wenzhe yelled back, glaring through the freezing snow. "Keep up or get out of my way!"

Suddenly, the frozen ground beneath Wenzhe’s boots cracked open.

The ice and rocks collapsed completely. Wenzhe lost his balance with a gasp and fell sideways down the steep hill. Xiao Chen reached out to grab Wenzhe’s collar to save him, but the sliding snow pulled him down too.

With a loud crash of falling rocks and ice, both men rolled out of control down the steep, slippery hill.

"Young Master! Your Highness!" Dong Li’s scared voice was completely drowned out by the roaring storm above.

Commander Gao ran to the edge and pulled Lu Yue back as more ground caved in. Up on the broken path, Dong Li, Commander Gao, and Lu Yue were left standing in shock. Now, three people were lost in the freezing dark: Yueqing, Wenzhe, and Xiao Chen.

At the bottom of the hill, the snow slide finally stopped.

Wenzhe pushed a heavy pile of snow off his chest, coughing hard as the sudden movement reopened his painful chest wounds. Blood soaked into his clothes, but he forced himself to stand up, using his sword to stay balanced.

A few feet away, Xiao Chen groaned and sat up, wiping snow off his face. Miraculously, he had kept his arms wrapped around his velvet bundle, keeping the dry blankets and medicine safe inside.

"Are you trying to kill us both?!" Xiao Chen shouted, dusting ice off his coat as he stood up.

"I did not ask you to grab me," Wenzhe growled, wincing in pain. "If you stayed back with your guards, you would not be down here."

"I am down here because you do not look where you step!" Xiao Chen fired back, holding the bundle close. "Now we are lost and cut off from the others. Are you happy now?"

"Shut up and start looking," Wenzhe ordered, holding his torch low over the snow. "She fell near here."

Even though they hated each other, neither man stopped moving. They walked through the deep, freezing snow, shouting her name into the loud storm.

After ten long minutes, Xiao Chen’s boot hit something under a pile of snow.

"Wenzhe! Over here!" Xiao Chen called out, dropping to his knees.

Wenzhe ran over and used his bare hands to dig through the snow. There lay Yueqing. Her face was pale, her lips were blue, and she was barely breathing.

"Yueqing..." Wenzhe whispered, his voice shaking as he lifted her cold body into his arms.

"Do not just stand there, she is freezing to death!" Xiao Chen said quickly. He opened his velvet bundle, pulled out a thick fur cloak, and wrapped it tightly around her. He looked around at the dark, blinding storm. "We cannot climb back up in this blizzard, and we cannot find the path back tonight. We need to find shelter right now."

"There is a small cave under those rocks," Wenzhe said, holding Yueqing close to his chest. "Follow me."

They stumbled into a small stone cave hidden behind big rocks that blocked out the cold wind.

Wenzhe gently laid Yueqing down on the ground, wrapping her in the warm furs Xiao Chen handed him. Xiao Chen quickly used dry tools from his bag to start a fire with small wooden branches near the wall.

As the warm orange fire lit up the cold cave, the two men stood on opposite sides of Yueqing’s body, glaring at each other with deep anger.

Wenzhe said coldly. "This is all your fault."

"My fault?" Xiao Chen laughed angrily, opening his bag to pull out warm liquid medicine. "She ran away from your camp because you treat her like a prisoner! You scared her into the woods, Wenzhe. This is your fault, not mine."

"She is my wife!" Wenzhe shouted, stepping forward with his fists tight.

"And she is dying right now because of your pride!" Xiao Chen shouted back, standing his ground near the fire. "Stop fighting and help me give her this medicine before her heart stops completely!"

Wenzhe ground his teeth in rage, but he forced himself to calm down for Yueqing. He knelt beside her and gently lifted her head so Xiao Chen could carefully pour the warm medicine into her mouth.

Outside, the heavy snowstorm kept roaring, trapping the two bitter enemies together in the small cave, forced to work together to keep the freezing woman alive.
