Chapter 167: Chapter

The sharp smell of strong alcohol filled the small space between them.

Yueqing soaked a piece of white cloth. Her hands were very steady, even though she was extremely tired. She leaned over Wenzhe’s bare back, looking closely at the deep, infected cut near his shoulder.

"Get ready," she whispered quietly, so she would not wake Xiao Chen. "This is going to burn."

Before Wenzhe could answer, Yueqing pressed the wet cloth directly onto the open wound.

Wenzhe’s whole body jerked in pain. A sharp gasp came out of his throat, and his back muscles went completely stiff like iron. His hands dug deep into the dirt floor, and he bit his teeth together hard to keep from screaming. Sweat poured down his pale face.

[Wow,] Yueqing thought as she wiped away the dirty blood. [He did not make a single sound. He can handle a crazy amount of pain.]

Wenzhe heard her thought in his mind. Even through the terrible burning pain, a small feeling of warmth filled his chest. He stayed completely still, breathing slowly, letting her clean every single wound without fighting back.

After washing away all the dirt, Yueqing opened the small jar of green medicine. She used her fingers to spread the cool cream over his swollen skin.

Wenzhe shivered as her soft, cold hands touched him. The cool cream felt so good after the burning alcohol.

"Stay still while I wrap this," Yueqing whispered. She unrolled the long white bandage, wrapping it tightly around his chest and shoulders to keep the medicine in place.

She was very close to him as she tied the final knot. Wenzhe could feel her warm breath on his neck, making his heart beat fast again.

Yueqing sat back, wiping her hands on a cloth and letting out a tired sigh. "There. Finished. You will not bleed to death tonight."

Wenzhe slowly pulled his clothes back up, covering his back. He turned around to face her, his dark eyes looking straight at her pale face.

The sharp pain in his back was turning into a dull ache. All he cared about now was the promise she made.

"I stayed still," Wenzhe said quietly, his deep voice rough. He leaned in a little closer. "I did not fight you."

Yueqing pulled her warm furs higher over her knees. "And?"

"My reward," Wenzhe said softly, looking at her lips and then back into her eyes. "You promised me a reward, Yueqing."

Yueqing stared at him, her face completely blank as she remembered the deal she made to make him behave.

[Right... the bribe,] she thought, rolling her eyes inside her head. [I forgot how stubborn he is.]

A tiny smile appeared on Wenzhe’s face as he heard her thought clearly. He did not look away, waiting to hear what she would give him.

Yueqing looked at Wenzhe’s serious face. His dark eyes were fixed on her, filled with a sharp, possessive warmth.

"Well?" Wenzhe asked softly, his deep voice barely louder than a whisper. "What is my reward, Madam Xi?"

Yueqing hesitated, her eyes nervously darting past Wenzhe’s shoulder. Just a few feet away, Xiao Chen was fast asleep against the rock wall.

"Not here," Yueqing whispered, her hands pressing lightly against Wenzhe’s chest to keep a small distance. "Xiao Chen is right there. If he wakes up and sees us—"

"Let him wake up," Wenzhe interrupted flatly.

He did not care about the prince at all. In fact, a dark, petty part of him wanted Xiao Chen to open his eyes and see exactly who held her.

Without hesitation, Wenzhe reached out and slid his hand behind her neck, pulling her closer. He leaned in, resting his forehead gently against hers, completely ignoring her weak resistance.

"Wenzhe..." Yueqing gasped softly, her face flushing hot.

[Is he crazy?!] she thought frantically, her mind racing. [The Third Prince is literally sleeping three steps away! If he wakes up and sees the great General acting like this, it will be a disaster!]

Wenzhe heard her panic loud and clear in his head, but it only made his lips curl into a slow, arrogant smile.

"Let him watch," Wenzhe murmured against her skin, his thumb softly tracing her jawline. "He brought medicine, but I brought you back to life. You are my wife, Yueqing. I do not hide from anyone."

Yueqing’s breath hitched. His chest was warm and solid, his heartbeat steadying her frantic nerves. Despite her worries about Xiao Chen, the cold fear from her fall was completely gone.

[This arrogant, foolish man...] Yueqing thought, letting out a soft, resigned sigh as her hands relaxed against his shoulders.

Wenzhe wrapped his arms securely around her, pulling her wrapped body against his chest, careful not to press her sore ribs. He sat back against the wall, holding her close as the fire slowly burned down to soft red embers.

Yueqing leaned back against Wenzhe’s broad chest, her eyes getting heavy from the warm fire. But Wenzhe was not ready to let her sleep.

"Wenzhe, I am tired," Yueqing whispered, her voice weak. "What is your reward? Speak fast, you block of wood."

Wenzhe let out a low, dark laugh. A soft smile touched his pale face before his eyes turned deep and intense.

"A block of wood?" Wenzhe whispered near her ear, his hand moving down to cup her waist.

Before she could answer, he leaned down and pressed his lips hard against her neck. Yueqing shivered as a rush of heat ran through her body.

Wenzhe did not stop there. He moved his lips up along her jaw, kissing her deeply on her mouth until she was breathless. At the same time, his large, warm hands slipped under her heavy fur cloak, sliding over her waist and pulling her tight against his body.

Yueqing’s eyes widened in shock. She pressed her hands hard against his chest, trying to push him away. But Wenzhe’s body was like solid iron; he did not budge an inch.

"Wenzhe, stop..." Yueqing gasped, her cheeks burning hot. She looked nervously toward the other side of the fire, where Xiao Chen lay sleeping.

She bit her lower lip hard, trying with all her strength not to make a single sound. But as Wenzhe’s hand moved gently over her skin, tracing warm paths up her side, a soft, helpless gasp escaped her throat.

Yueqing quickly slapped her hand over her own mouth, her heart pounding violently against her ribs.

[Is he insane?!] she thought frantically. [The prince is right there!]

Wenzhe heard her panic in his head, but it only made his grip tighter. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, leaving hot, lingering kisses along her skin while his hand cupped the back of her head, forcing her to stay close.

"Do you have any idea how much I missed you?" Wenzhe growled softly against her skin, his voice rough and full of pain. "I was gone for a whole month. I rode my horse day and night through the freezing cold, without sleep, just to reach you in time..."

He pulled back just enough to glare down into her dark eyes, his breathing heavy and ragged.

"...and when I finally arrive, you were not even waiting for me," Wenzhe whispered bitterly, his hands tightening around her waist. "Instead, I find you running through the mountains with that jerk."

Yueqing stared up at his pale, exhausted face, seeing the raw hurt and crazy possessiveness deep in his eyes.

[This stupid block of wood...] Yueqing thought, her chest tightening as her weak hands finally stopped pushing him away.

Wenzhe heard her thought clearly. The dark anger on his face melted into a soft, quiet relief. He leaned down and gave her one last long, deep kiss on her lips, holding her close until she completely stopped fighting him and rested her head against his chest.

Yueqing leaned her head against his broad shoulder, her breathing slowing down as her hand rested softly over his chest.

"Nothing happened between the prince and me," Yueqing whispered into the quiet dark, her voice soft and honest. "I do not look at him like a man. I look at him..."

She stopped speaking out loud, her eyelids dropping heavy with exhaustion.

[...like he’s my son,] her thoughts finished clearly, echoing straight into his mind.

Wenzhe froze completely.

For a second, the harsh, jealous anger in his chest died out, replaced by sheer shock. He stared down at her pale face, her thought ringing so loud and clear in his head that he almost laughed out loud.

A heavy breath of relief washed over him. The tight, painful knot that had been twisting in his stomach all night finally melted away. He tightened his strong arms around her waist, pulling her even closer against his broad chest while being careful of her sore ribs.

"As a son!" She said finally.

"A son?" Wenzhe whispered near her ear, a low, amused smirk touching his lips. "The Third Prince of the empire would lose his mind if he heard you think that."

Yueqing’s eyes fluttered shut, her cheek resting over his heart as his steady beats calmed her down.

[Let him lose his mind then,] she thought lazily, pulling his thick fur cloak higher around her cold shoulders. [I am too tired to care. Just shut up and let me sleep, block of wood.]

Wenzhe let out a low rumble of laughter against her hair.
