Chapter 170: Chapter
Inside the warm command tent, Wenzhe gently laid Yueqing down onto the soft bed, making sure her sore ribs were comfortable before pulling the thick furs over her.
Without wasting a second, he called for the camp physician. The old doctor rushed inside, bowing low before quickly examining Yueqing’s injuries. After checking her pulse and inspecting her bandaged torso, the physician burned a sweet, soothing incense near the bed to help her pain and relax her body.
Once the doctor finished and bowed his way out, Wenzhe sat on the edge of the bed, his dark eyes looking at her with deep seriousness.
"As soon as you rest today, I am sending you back to the capital," Wenzhe said, his voice firm and unyielding. "I am sending a full troop of my strongest guards to protect you. It is no longer safe for you here in the camp."
Yueqing adjusted her furs, looking up at his pale face. A thought had been bugging her ever since they were in the cave.
"Wenzhe," Yueqing asked softly, her eyes narrowing slightly. "How did you even know I was missing? How did you reach me so fast in that storm?"
Wenzhe’s expression hardened just a bit. "Someone placed an anonymous secret letter under my tent door," he explained flatly. "It tipped me off that you were in danger and gave me the exact direction you went."
Yueqing blinked in surprise. "A letter? From who?"
"I do not know yet," Wenzhe replied, standing up. "But I will find out."
Before Yueqing could ask anything else, a guard called out from outside the tent entrance. "General! Commander Guo requires your presence immediately. It is urgent news regarding the border perimeter."
Wenzhe looked back down at Yueqing, giving her hand a brief, firm squeeze. "Rest. We will speak more later."
With that, Wenzhe turned and strode out of the tent, leaving Yueqing completely alone in the quiet, incense-filled room.
The moment his heavy footsteps faded away, Yueqing sat up slightly, staring blankly at the ceiling.
[System 009, wake up,] Yueqing called out in her head. [Who gave Wenzhe that letter? Who tipped him off about me?]
A smooth, cheerful mechanical chime rang inside her mind.
[System 009: Greetings, Host! As per plot confidentiality rules, revealing the identity of secret tipsters requires a point exchange. I can trade this hidden plot information for your Villain Points!]
Yueqing rolled her eyes inside her head. [Villain Points? How many Villain Points do I even have right now?]
[System 009: Let me check your current balance... Host currently possesses 520 Villain Points!]
Yueqing frowned. [Okay... then what about my Favorability Points with Wenzhe? How many of those do I have?]
[System 009: Calculating Target Wenzhe’s affection... Host currently possesses 850 Favorability Points!]
Yueqing nearly choked on her own saliva.
[Wait, WHAT?!] Yueqing screamed internally, her eyes widening in total disbelief. [850?! Why on earth are my Favorability Points so much higher than my Villain Points?! What is wrong with that block of wood?!]
System 009 let out a small, playful beep.
[System 009: Host should really ask herself that question! Perhaps it has something to do with all the kissing, holding, and neck-biting in the cave last night? Target Wenzhe’s heart is practically soaring!]
Yueqing’s face flushed bright red. [Shut up! I didn’t ask for your commentary!]
She huffed, pulling the blanket higher over her cheeks to hide her blush.
[Forget it. Keep your secret. I am NOT wasting my hard-earned Villain Points just to find out who wrote a stupid note. I’m going to sleep.]
System 009 chimed happily before going silent. Though Yueqing closed her eyes and pretended to rest, her mind kept racing. She really, really wanted to know who sent that letter and why someone in this camp was secretly keeping her alive.
Night had fallen heavy over the military camp, turning the surrounding mountains into dark shapes beneath a pitch-black sky.
Most of the soldiers were asleep, but the camp was far from quiet. Torches burned outside the main tents, guards walked their steady routes, and the sound of horses and swift messengers echoed through the night.
Inside her tent, Su Yueqing lay under thick fur blankets, staring blankly at the roof above her.
She had been trying to sleep for an hour, but her mind just would not rest. The doctor had given her medicine earlier to help her recover from the long journey, and even though her body felt heavy and sore, sleep was impossible.
Her thoughts kept turning back to Xi Wenzhe.
She remembered how he looked when she entered his tent earlier that evening, his face pale from exhaustion and his dark eyes tired after days without rest. He had barely looked up at her before turning his focus back to the war reports on his desk.
She had walked out feeling angry. But now that she was alone, she could not stop thinking about him.
Yueqing finally pushed the blankets aside and sat up, rubbing her tired eyes.
[What is that block of wood doing right now?] she thought, pulling her heavy cloak over her shoulders as she stepped into the cold night air. [Probably sitting at his desk pretending he isn’t exhausted while scaring everyone who walks past him.]
She walked quietly through the dark paths, keeping to the shadows. She did not want to disturb him; she only wanted to see if he was still awake and figure out why he had been so cold toward her.
When she reached the back wall of Wenzhe’s main strategy tent, heavy voices drifted through the canvas.
Yueqing froze in her tracks, staying hidden in the dark to listen.
"General, the plans for tomorrow night are complete," Commander Guo’s voice called out firmly. "Our scouts have mapped the Third Prince’s route, and our men near the Northern Pass are in position."
"Good," Wenzhe replied, his voice low and icy. "Make sure no one moves until I give the command. Once Prince Xiao Chen brings his unauthorized troops into the valley, we will surround them and seize the illegal weapons red-handed."
"And once the evidence is secured?" Commander Guo asked.
"Send the report to the capital immediately," Wenzhe answered without a second of hesitation. "Prince Xiao Chen has crossed the line. If he is moving military supplies without imperial permission, he will answer to His Majesty. If the evidence confirms treason, he will be stripped of his royal title and exiled forever."
