Chapter 169: Chapter

The carriage came to a complete stop right in the middle of the camp.

Yueqing stretched her arms, sighing with relief. "Finally," she muttered, reaching for the carriage door. "My legs feel like jelly, but at least I can walk to the tent."

She pushed open the door and stepped down onto the small wooden step, ready to place her feet on the snow. But before her boots could even touch the ground, two strong arms reached into the carriage frame and scooped her completely off her feet.

"Whoa!" Yueqing gasped, her hands flying up instinctively to catch herself.

Wenzhe held her tightly in a full bridal carry, holding her soft weight securely against his broad chest. His face was completely calm, as if he were holding a lightweight pillow instead of a fully clothed woman.

"Wenzhe! Put me down!" Yueqing hissed, her cheeks instantly burning hot as she looked around. "Everyone is watching! Put me down right now!"

Soldiers around the camp were trying very hard to look busy, pretending to sweep snow or sharpen spears, but every single one of them was sneaking glances at their severe General carrying his wife.

"No," Wenzhe said flatly, taking long, steady strides toward his main command tent. "Why would I let my injured wife walk in the cold snow?"

"I have two working feet, you block of wood!" Yueqing complained, wiggling slightly in his grip. "My ribs are sore, not my ankles!"

"If you keep moving, your ribs will hurt more," Wenzhe replied smoothly, not dropping his pace for a single second. He looked down at her red face, a small, teasing spark appearing in his dark eyes. "Besides, if I put you down, you might run off with the Third Prince again."

Yueqing’s mouth dropped open in shock. She reached up and pinched his neck gently, though she couldn’t exert much force.

"I ran off with him because I was bored!" she argued loudly. "Put me down, you arrogant man!"

[This absolute idiot,] Yueqing thought frantically, hiding her burning face against his collarbone so the soldiers wouldn’t see her blush. [He loves causing a scene just to show off!]

Wenzhe heard her thought clearly, and a deep, low rumble of laughter shook his chest right against her cheek. "Hold on tight, Madam Xi," he whispered near her ear, his voice warm and amused. "We are almost at the tent."

While Wenzhe carried Yueqing into the warmth of the main tent, a figure stood watching from behind the shadow of a nearby supply tent.

It was Li Mei.

She stood quietly in the freezing cold, her hands tucked into her sleeves as she watched Wenzhe carry Yueqing so gently. Seeing Yueqing back safe and unharmed brought a small, quiet sigh of relief to Li Mei’s lips.

Thank goodness she is okay, Li Mei thought, relaxing her tight shoulders.

Suddenly, a cold hand reached out from behind the canvas and yanked Li Mei sharply into the narrow gap between two tents.

Before Li Mei could react, a sharp, loud slap cracked across her face.

The heavy force turned Li Mei’s head to the side, her skin burning with instant, hot pain. She stumbled back against the wooden support pole, her hand flying up to cover her bruised cheek.

Standing in front of her was the mysterious woman dressed in the thick black cloak. Her shadow completely blocked the daylight.

"Do you think I am stupid?" the black-cloaked woman hissed, her voice low and dangerous like a snake. "You are the one who sent that secret tip to Wenzhe! You wrote the letter telling him where Sue Yueqing was!"

Li Mei held her sore cheek, her voice shaking as she tried to defend herself. "I... I do not know what you are talking about—"

"Stop lying!" the woman snapped, stepping closer until her hidden face was inches from Li Mei. "You ruined the plan! Sue Yueqing was supposed to disappear or die in that storm!"

Li Mei straightened her back, dropping her hand from her face as her eyes turned sharp and angry. "I told you before! Our goal is to destroy the Xi family! It is not to murder innocent people!"

"Innocent?" the woman scoffed with pure disgust. "Sue Yueqing is the wife of Wenzhe! She is the only thing standing between you and Wenzhe’s heart! How can you get your revenge if you keep saving her life?"

"If I want to break their marriage, I will do it myself!" Li Mei shouted back in a fierce whisper. "I want revenge on the Xi family, but I am not a cold-blooded killer!"

The woman in the black cloak reached out and grabbed Li Mei’s chin in a tight, painful grip, digging her sharp nails into her skin.

"Listen to me, you useless girl," the woman threatened, her voice dripping with venom. "You came to me begging for help. You were nothing but a weak, poor village girl with no power at all. I brought you into the Xi mansion. I made you a maid so you could get close to Wenzhe. If you want your revenge, you will follow my orders!"

Li Mei glared into the dark hood, her teeth gritted tight.

"If you disobey me again," the woman whispered coldly, "I will make sure my men kill the rest of the survivors from your home village. I will wipe them out completely."

Li Mei’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes filled with pure rage. "If you dare touch my people," Li Mei whispered back, her voice deadly serious, "I will kill you with my own hands."

The woman stared at Li Mei for a long moment. Then, her harsh grip slowly relaxed. She let out a small laugh and took Li Mei’s cold hands into her own, patting them gently as if she were a caring mother.

"Now, now... calm down, Li Mei," the woman said in a soft, fake voice. "I am only saying this for your own good. We must stay focused on our goal."

She leaned in close, whispering her next words directly into Li Mei’s ear.

"Seduction with sad stories is taking too long," the woman instructed. "You need a faster way to force your way into the family. Go into his room. Get into his bed, and make sure you get pregnant with Wenzhe’s child."

Li Mei froze, her eyes widening in shock.

"Once you carry a child of the Xi family," the woman whispered darkly, "Sue Yueqing will have no choice but to leave, and the Xi family’s ruin will begin. Do not fail me this time."

With those final words, the woman pulled her black cloak tight around her shoulders, stepped out of the shadow, and vanished into the crowded camp. Li Mei stood alone in the cold, her cheek still burning as the dark command echoed in her mind.
