Chapter 182: Chapter
Nine leaned over on the bed, resting his head on his hand as he looked down at her. A faint blue light flashed in his eyes for a second as he checked her body.
"Your heart is beating too fast, Host," Nine said softly. "You have also lost way too much weight over these two months. If you don’t start eating proper food and getting real sleep, this body is going to die before you even finish your mission."
Yueqing lay still, staring blankly at the dark wall. A long, tired sigh came out of her mouth.
"I don’t know why he’s so angry with me..." she whispered, her voice weak and sad. "He wouldn’t even let me touch him..."
Nine stayed quiet. For once, he didn’t make a joke or try to explain things. He just stayed beside her in the dark room.
Feeling completely exhausted, Yueqing slowly turned onto her side toward him. She pulled herself closer, resting her head against his chest to feel safe and warm.
Nine didn’t pull away. He gently put his arm around her thin shoulders, holding her close. Within a few moments, her heavy eyes closed, and her weak breathing became slow and peaceful as she fell fast asleep.
Morning came quickly, pale sunlight filtering through the paper windows of the quiet bedroom.
Yueqing slowly opened her eyes. She found herself lying comfortably in the center of her bed, fully wrapped in thick, warm blankets.
Sitting right by her bedside was Nine, dressed smartly in his white and light-blue robes, looking completely relaxed. Standing right beside him near the foot of the bed was Lu Yue, her hand resting firmly on the hilt of her sword, her dark eyes staring at Nine with deep suspicion.
Yueqing blinked, her sleepy eyes moving back and forth between the two of them. "You..."
Lu Yue immediately stepped forward, bowing respectfully to her mistress.
"Young Madam, you’re awake," Lu Yue said, her voice tight with caution as she gestured toward Nine. "This man arrived early this morning on horseback. He claims that Master Su, your father, sent him here personally to serve as one of your personal guards and assistants. I came inside to ask if you actually know him, or if I should get rid of him right now."
Nine stood up smoothly, fanning himself with a calm, handsome smile, looking over at Yueqing with a small, knowing glint in his eye.
A wave of deep relief washed over Yueqing. For a terrifying second, she had thought Lu Yue had caught a strange man sleeping in her room overnight.
She let out a soft sigh, sitting up slowly in her bed while pulling the blanket around her shoulders.
"Yes, Lu Yue, it’s alright," Yueqing said, her voice quiet but clear. "My father mentioned sending him to help me. He is safe. You may leave for now, and I will call you when I need you."
Lu Yue looked at Nine one last time, her eyes narrowed in warning, before bowing to Yueqing. "As you wish, Young Madam. I will be right outside."
With that, Lu Yue turned around and stepped out, closing the double doors firmly behind her.
As soon as Lu Yue stepped out and closed the door, Yueqing grabbed a heavy feather pillow and smacked Nine right on the shoulder.
"Ow! Ah, the pain!" Nine gasped dramatically, clutching his arm and making a terribly fake pained face. He snapped his fan open, fanning himself with an overly serious expression. "Host, violence is no way to greet your hard-working system in the morning!"
Yueqing glared at him, pulling the blanket higher up her chest. "That’s what you get for making up stories on the spot."
"Stories? I gave you a rock-solid background identity!" Nine declared proudly. He leaned over, grabbed her by the wrists, and gently but firmly pulled her upright on the mattress. "Now, no more lying in bed moping! Today is ’Get Healthy Day’! Starting right now, I am getting this body back into shape before you pass out from malnutrition."
"Hey! Let go! I’m tired!" Yueqing protested, dragging her feet and trying to pull back under the covers.
"You’ve been in bed for two months!" Nine countered smoothly, easily out-muscling her frail, weakened body and lifting her onto her feet.
Before Yueqing could argue any further, Nine called out toward the outer corridor, his voice crisp and clear. "Maids! Come in and assist Young Madam in preparing her warm bath!"
The bedroom doors creaked open, and three young maids stepped inside, carrying wooden basins and fresh towels. But the moment their eyes fell on the scene. a handsome, unfamiliar man holding their young miss by her arms they froze in sheer panic. They looked back and forth between Nine and Yueqing, hesitating to come any closer, completely shocked by the intimacy.
Yueqing saw the wide-eyed hesitation on the maids’ faces and immediately put on her stern, authoritative voice.
"What are you standing there gaping for?" Yueqing barked at them, her dark eyes flashing. "Didn’t you hear him? Move! Get the bath ready right now!"
"Y-Yes, Young Madam!" the maids stammered in unison, bowing frantically before rushing into the side chamber to prepare the wooden tub and hot water.
Nine finally released his grip on her arms, giving her a satisfied, approving grin.
Yueqing smoothed down her messy sleeves, giving him a playful warning look as she walked toward the bathing chamber. "You stay right here in this room and don’t do anything stupid while I’m gone."
"Cross my heart, Host!" Nine smiled, holding up three fingers in a promise as she stepped away to get washed.
After her warm bath, Yueqing stepped into her dressing room wearing soft inner clothes. She tried to reach for her simple hair ribbon, but Nine shook his head and gestured to the maids.
Under Nine’s strict orders, the maids got to work. Even though Yueqing complained, they brushed her long hair until it was neat. They pinned it up nicely and added jade and silver hairpins. When they were done, she looked bright, healthy, and pretty again.
Once she was dressed in a clean, soft pink dress, Nine gently took her wrist and pulled her outside into her quiet courtyard.
There, sitting on the stone table under the morning sun, was a big breakfast. There were bowls of hot chicken porridge, warm steamed buns, sweet pastries, and fresh tea.
"While you were bathing, I sent some servants to get your breakfast and set it up out here," Nine said with a proud grin, pulling out a stool for her. "I figured you wouldn’t want to go to the main hall and eat with your in-laws after yesterday’s mess."
Yueqing looked at the warm food and felt the gentle morning wind. For the first time in two whole months, a real smile appeared on her face.
She looked up at Nine and gave him a soft nod.
"You actually did something smart for once," Yueqing said with a quiet laugh, sitting down and picking up her chopsticks. "Thank you, Nine."
"Of course.. what would you do without me.."
