Chapter 193: Chapter

Nine bolted out the door like his life depended on it, sprinting straight past Lu Yue in the courtyard. Lu Yue stopped, turning her head slowly to shoot him the most dramatic, bombastic side-eye in the history of the dynasty before rolling her eyes and walking away.

Back inside, Su Yueqing spent the entire rest of the day locked away in her room.

She did not step a single foot outside. Instead, she spent hours huddled under the blankets, groaning every time her sore muscles shifted, and panicking over how on earth she was going to survive running into Wenzhe again.

How am I supposed to look him in the eye? she thought, pressing her burning face into her pillow. I kicked him in the shin, stole my clothes, and escaped like a thief in the night!

Every time she closed her eyes, she remembered the way he had looked at her, and the way his deep, smug voice had called her "wife." A fresh wave of heat rushed up her neck, making her want to roll off the bed and disappear into the floorboards.

Just as she was trying to figure out if she could fake a sudden, fatal illness for the next month, the heavy wooden door of her chamber creaked open.

Lu Yue stepped into the room, bowing her head respectfully.

"Greetings, my lady," Lu Yue said, keeping her tone smooth and proper. "A female physician has arrived outside. The young master sent her to check on your well-being."

Yueqing froze under the blanket, blinking in total confusion for a second. Then it hit her.

Her face turned bright red all over again. That scheming, shameless brute! He actually sent a doctor because he wrecked my body so badly?!

"Let her in," Yueqing mumbled, pulling the covers up to her nose in sheer mortification.

A moment later, a quiet, middle-aged woman walked into the room carrying a wooden box of medicinal herbs and soothing remedies. Though Yueqing wanted to die of embarrassment on the spot, she was at least deeply relieved that Wenzhe had sent a woman instead of a male doctor.

As the physician gently applied a cooling, fragrant ointment to her aching lower back and handed her a warm cup of herbal tea to ease her sore muscles, Yueqing clenched her fists under the blanket.

Just you wait, Wenzhe, she cursed furiously in her mind, her cheeks burning hot. The moment I can walk properly again, I am going to make your life a living nightmare!

After the female physician packed her things and left the room, Lu Yue lingered near the doorway. She started to turn away, hesitating with a strange look on her face.

Yueqing noticed her lingering and squinted. "What is wrong with you? Spit it out."

Lu Yue bit her lip, finally deciding to speak her mind. She walked over to the edge of the bed and lowered her head.

"Madam, I know I am in no place to ask this question," Lu Yue said quietly, her voice full of cautious worry. "But please... what is your relationship with that guard, Yang Li? He acts way too familiar with you, and it is not good."

Su Yueqing let out a dry, helpless laugh and shook her head against the pillow.

"You don’t like him, do you?" she muttered, a tired smile tugging at the corner of her lips.

Lu Yue frowned, crossing her arms tightly as she shook her head.

"But Madam," Lu Yue argued, her voice dropping to a worried whisper. "What if the young master gets upset? Soon, the young master will be fully recovered and walking around the courtyard. If he finds out about you and sees another man hanging around your chambers like he owns the place, it will not end well."

Yueqing let out a loud, dramatic snort and waved a hand dismissively, acting like she didn’t care at all.

"Let them try," Yueqing scoffed, rolling her eyes as she leaned back against the pillows. "If Wenzhe wants to throw a fit and that idiot Yang Li wants to cause trouble, let them come. I would beat them both black and blue if they dare try to ruin my peace and quiet."

Meanwhile, back in the main courtyard, Duchess Xi sat at her polished mahogany desk surrounded by thick ledgers and ink brushes. She frowned as she tapped her abacus, calculating the monthly household stipends and figuring out how to stretch the remaining funds to cover the upcoming banquet. The grand event was scheduled for the day after tomorrow, but their supply run had to happen tomorrow morning, leaving her with a mountain of logistical headaches.

"We are cutting it dangerously close on the silk and imported wine budget," she muttered to herself, adjusting her hairpin in frustration.

Before she could finish adding up the column, the heavy oak doors banged open. Aunt Ronghua hurried into the room, breathless and wide-eyed. With a sharp flick of her wrist, Aunt Ronghua dismissed the surrounding maids, waiting until the heavy doors clicked shut before leaning over the desk with a conspiratorial grin.

"Meiyun, drop the ledgers," Aunt Ronghua hissed, unable to contain her excitement. "You will never guess what just happened in the inner court."

Duchess Xi looked up, arching a single eyebrow. "If this is about the vegetable vendor shorting us on radishes again, I don’t want to hear it."

"Worse! Much, much worse or better, depending on how you look at it!" Aunt Ronghua clapped her hands together softly. "A female physician was just seen leaving Su Yueqing’s room. And that is not even the best part. Lanyin, Qianqian, and Gu Yue all swore they saw Yueqing limping out of Wenzhe’s private chambers this morning, holding her waist like her bones were broken!"

Aunt Ronghua leaned in closer, her eyes glittering with gossip. "Meiyun... what do you think that means?"

Duchess Xi froze, the ink brush hovering over her ledger as Aunt Ronghua’s words sank in.

A warm, gentle smile spread across the Duchess’s face. She calmly set her brush down and folded her hands on the desk, her mature eyes shining with quiet happiness.

"It means," Duchess Xi murmured softly, "that they have finally expressed their love for each other. Thank goodness, enough with all their constant fighting."

Aunt Ronghua smiled with deep affection and nodded in agreement. "Truly. After all these time of them bickering and clashing like fire and ice, to think they finally let their guards down."

"Look at the facts," the Duchess said, her heart swelling with emotion. "He kept her with him all night, cared enough to send a doctor when she was hurting, and showed her how deeply he cares. This means they have finally cleared the air."

Aunt Ronghua chuckled warmly. "True. And if they keep going like this, Madam... I think we might need to start getting the nursery ready sooner than we think."

Duchess Xi’s eyes lit up with pure joy. The thought of a grandchild, a little child running around the estate and bringing true life back to their home filled her with a happiness. She nodded slowly, smiling from ear to ear.

"Yes," the Duchess whispered, looking out toward her son’s courtyard with hopeful eyes. "Let us not too much on the banquet. We have much bigger celebrations to prepare for soon."
