Chapter 1240: Chapter 679: Growth (Part 2)
There’s no doubt the young man learned something from Dismas; when you take out a gun, it’s destined to shoot, otherwise don’t take it out.
At this moment, the smoke from the musket in the young man’s hand had yet to dissipate. Feeling the force transmitted from his hand and the fearful gazes of those around him, he seemed to understand something.
It had been said before that most of these people were in teams. Seeing their teammates dead, others also came up to start fighting. Judging by their appearances, they obviously weren’t scavengers.
"No wonder you wanted to slander Hamlet, turns out you guys wanted to plunder others too."
"Don’t talk nonsense."
"What’s that? Not brave enough to enter the ruins but bold enough to plunder, what are you guys afraid of?"
The young boy trapped in violent torment kept saying things to provoke those guys, and without a doubt, he really did hit the mark.
Who would be content with just picking up trash? It’s tiring and hard work with little pay; one came here to get rich.
Among these people, many were part-time Looters. Now seeing Hamlet cracking down on such behavior, they naturally were unwilling, feeling that their financial paths were being cut off.
When provoked enough, they wanted to make a move -- as soon as your gun is spent, it’s just scrap iron. See if papa doesn’t kill you.
"This is Hamlet, you dare touch me, you’ll be the next hanging up there."
The young man was unyielding. His rebuke directly made those guys hesitate. They were just some riffraff, not daring to mess with Hamlet, and could only choose to retreat.
But the gaze when they left was filled with resentment.
"Kid, you’ve stirred up trouble." Some mercenaries quite admired the young man’s bravery and couldn’t help but remind him.
Who knew the young man didn’t care at all, a carefree smile appeared on his face.
"To hell with it! I’m not afraid of them; I’m going to enlist in Hamlet’s army. If they’re bold enough, let them come find me in the camp."
"Haha!"
This statement immediately sparked laughter among the crowd. No wonder he dared to do this; he had thought of his retreat plan long ago. However, it was indeed the best solution.
People are social creatures, and order is determined by the interests of most people. Not to mention they are weak and strongly resentful of the threats posed by those evil Looters.
So they should uphold high respect for Hamlet, the maintainers of order.
They couldn’t change much, but they would spread the news quickly. In Lance’s plan, no one is superfluous.
This was part of the plan...
On the outskirts of the ruins, many man-made stakes appeared. This was an experimental device set up by Hamlet to test the danger of the ruins.
There was one at intervals, some already tied to the stakes, awaiting the arrival of night, while others stood empty, waiting for that someone.
Most people only felt the function of order when they returned to town. At the very least, they didn’t have to worry about suddenly being plundered or someone shooting from the dark.
Initially, seeing those patrolling police around would give them a feeling of being controlled, as if everything they did was restricted.
But now, in the face of the pressure brought by that chaotic scene at the ruins, it was no longer a big deal. On the contrary, seeing the police made them feel safe.
In town, there were people salvaging scrap metal, and if you had something good you could visit that antique shop.
When night fell, the town transformed from its daytime stillness to bustling vibrancy.
In the taverns, those guys started bragging about what treasures they found in the ruins, or what good stuff they got.
Among them, finding copper coins and silver coins wasn’t strange, but someone had found Gold Coins; such news drove other adventurers crazy. Envy, jealousy, and hatred were useless; now they just wanted the day to arrive quickly, they also wanted to get rich.
Gold Coins were found in the ruins?
Could Lance’s guess be wrong, was the ruins really an undeveloped treasure trove?
This brings us to why Lance stationed the Honor Guard at the ruins and not at the old mansion?
The reason is that some things can only be done by them, only their full loyalty can satisfy the mission’s requirements.
Because their task, apart from monitoring the progress of those adventurers, was also to enter the ruins and hide money in those corners.
Inside were bags of copper coins, scattered Gold Coins and silver coins, or some not very valuable jewelry and Yellow Crystals placed in various places.
For example, sack-covered backpacks left during escape, or crates, wooden torch racks, whatever, just stuff a little bit here and there.
This was like setting a feeding ground for fishing; without discovery of harvest, those adventurers would quickly leave. But as long as these are left for them to find, they will maintain their enthusiasm.
The fantasy of overnight wealth enveloped their minds, then they would become the sword in Lance’s hand to sweep the ruins.
This matter couldn’t be done with ordinary troops, if the news leaked it would cause suspicion, only the utterly loyal Honor Guard could execute it.
Everything was under Lance’s control; manipulating hearts and minds was his expertise.
Compared to the bustling crowd, the boy who returned to town also exchanged the hidden silver ring for money.
Faced with those guys who came from the same village, although they were timid, the boy still split the money according to the original agreement.
"Brother, are you really going to enlist?"
Others, while happy getting the money, couldn’t help but ask about his previous words.
"That’s right, I’m going to join Hamlet, I want to bring my family over, and enlisting is the fastest way."
The boy realized that without strength in the ruins, he was just meat for others to slaughter, he didn’t want to suffer that again.
Out of many years of friendship, the boy still reminded these people.
"This time we were lucky to encounter Hamlet’s law enforcement, but the ruins are so big, it’s not always going to be so lucky, I advise you not to think about it, find a job here and settle down."
"Brother is right, I won’t go to the ruins anymore, this time we got lucky, who knows about the next time."
"I heard that the construction site in town is recruiting, I’ll go check it out."
"Being an apprentice isn’t bad, a bit hard, but I can learn a craft, then I can return to my hometown and open a blacksmith shop, or become a carpenter."
Everyone exchanged a few words, seemingly having planned their future, working to earn money then bring their families over.
This was the city’s siphon effect on the surrounding areas, compared to the chaos of the outer world, they preferred to remain under Hamlet’s Sanctuary.
However, not everyone was willing to give up the dream of getting rich; today’s scavenging income was the most money they ever had in their lives.
And it was just an ordinary ring, they heard various stories upon returning to town, who found what, who dug up something, getting rich overnight.
That seemed to carry some sort of magic that drove them, this force was called — Greed.
"When we came with the caravan, big brother said he’d lead us to make big money together."
"Exactly, didn’t you hear what they found? Gold Coins are waiting on the ground for us to pick up."
"Why fear those guys, brother, when you fired they were scared stiff."
Those people opened their mouths to stir up, some talked about relationships, others talked about those treasures, and some wanted to dispel worries.
But the boy didn’t agree to them, directly indicating: "If you want to go, then go, I’m not stopping you."
After all, he wasn’t a fool, from what happened before, he saw through these people.
Such weak so-called relationships in the face of difficulties, might as well do without them!
All this talk now was just wanting to push him out, to use him to protect them.
He couldn’t be bothered to say more, their paths parted here.
But the boy still underestimated their inexplicable psychology, seeing him truly not going, they set their eyes on the musket at his waist.
"Brother, since you don’t need it, leave the gun to us."
"Yeah, this way we have some means to deal with those bandits."
"..."
The boy paused in astonishment, looking at them, only feeling cold...
