In the still silence of her realm, Death watched.

Her gaze, ancient and fathomless, was fixed on Alex. He lay on the slab of stone in the mortal world, his back seared with glowing runes—symbols that shimmered with divine logic and primal power. But it wasn’t the pain that held her attention.

It was the stir beneath the surface.

Something had begun to awaken.

Not visible. Not physical. Not anything a mortal eye—or even a demon’s gaze—could grasp. But to Death, it was like watching a locked door slowly creak open... one she had seen before, long ago, in another place, another life.

"So... you finally started to awaken, dear," she murmured, her voice soft with awe and sorrow.

She leaned forward, resting her chin on her palm as a rare frown touched her lips.

"’She’ will notice soon. If she gets to you first, I’ll lose you... all over again."

The word again trembled with pain no soul had heard in eons.

Her fingers clenched tightly around the edge of her throne.

"I need to send you to the next world quickly, before it’s too late," she whispered.

Then, more softly still:

"Dear... I hope you continue to love me this time."

•••

I woke up in Death’s Realm.

The cold void of stars above, the smooth obsidian underfoot, and that ever-familiar stillness in the air—it all felt like stepping into a dream I had visited too many times to count. But it wasn’t a dream. This was Death’s domain, and I was more familiar with it than most people ever would be.

Stretching my limbs, I let out a deep breath. My body still ached faintly from the rune engraving—especially down my spine where molten Celestial Uranium had been etched into my flesh—but there was a strange warmth now too. Power. Connection.

"So what do you think?" I said, turning around slowly and showing my back. The newly embedded metal glistened faintly under the starlight, the basic runes aligned like a second spine.

Death appeared before me like a whisper, materializing from shadows that bent to her will. Her eyes drifted over the glowing lines on my back.

"It looks sexy," she said with a grin. "I knew you’d survive it."

I gave a wry smile. "Sure, they’re only basic runes, but they’ve already increased my strength by about two percent. That’s nothing for an ordinary man, but for me? That’s huge. And if I can advance the rune letters... a ten percent total boost wouldn’t be a dream."

Death, however, seemed distracted. Her eyes kept shifting around as though sensing something far away. Something coming.

"So," she asked suddenly, "are you ready to go to the next world?"

Her tone didn’t match her usual teasing demeanor. There was urgency in her voice. That alone made me pause.

I raised an eyebrow, stepping a bit closer. "Death, my dear... is something the matter?"

She leaned in and kissed me—soft, quick, and purposeful.

"I don’t have time to explain," she said quietly, her lips still close. "When you arrive in the next world, I’ll tell you everything. Just—no matter what happens, don’t panic. Nothing in the multiverse can harm you. You are protected, Alex."

That wasn’t reassuring. When Death sounded worried and asked me not to panic, it wasn’t just another day in paradise.

But I didn’t push further. I knew her well enough to tell when she was holding something back for my sake.

"I’ll head back to Nazarick first," I said. "I’ll handle what I need to there, then go straight to the One Piece world."

She nodded, her voice softening again. "I love you, dear."

"I love you too."

"You’re happy with your current life, right?"

"Happy?" I gave a small laugh. "I’m living my dream life—and it’s all thanks to you."

There was a shimmer of relief in her gaze as she slowly raised her hand. I felt space twist, and the black stars around me vanished into golden mist.

When I opened my eyes again, I was in the laboratory.

The ornate, dark marble halls of my domain greeted me. The air was cool and familiar, and the pressure of magical energy around me was like returning to the embrace of a loyal beast.

Demiurge was already nearby, waiting as though he sensed something coming.

"My lord," he said, bowing. "You’re back."

"I don’t have time to stay long," I said as I walked past him. "There’s something I need to take care of in another world. Tell Albedo I’m back."

Without waiting, I entered [Gate] and entered the throne room. Albedo appeared within seconds, elegant as always, her eyes lighting up at the sight of me.

"Lord Alex," she greeted, bowing deeply. "You’ve returned. Shall I prepare your seat?"

"No time for that," I replied. "Call Cocytus and Narberal. Immediately."

She blinked, straightening. "Is something the matter?"

I looked her straight in the eyes. "No time to explain."

There was a flicker of tension in her posture, but she didn’t ask again. "As you command."
