Pampering Discarded Heroines Triggers My 10,000x Rebate System
Chapter 42: No Active Quest AvailableOutside, the medical droid hummed softly.
"Wait here, Doctor," Evren murmured.
Dr. Hayes nodded in response, holding the four-foot machine in place by the hallway wall.
Evren turned the brass handle and pushed the double doors open, stepping into the sunlit suite.
The room was quiet.
The curtains near the garden balcony fluttered in the morning breeze, but the marble tea table was empty. The gray linen bed sheets were untouched.
Evren narrowed his eyes. His S-Rank senses instantly caught the faint, ragged sound of shallow breathing tucked close to the wall.
Suddenly, a shadow burst from behind the heavy curtains.
SWOOSH!
Zephyra suddenly lunged forward, clutching the jagged piece of the broken teacup in her trembling hand. She aimed it straight at Evren’s throat, desperate to get past him and escape through the doorway.
Evren reacted almost immediately, snapping his left hand up and cleanly intercepting her trembling wrist in mid-air.
CLACK.
He easily absorbed the impact. Before Zephyra could twist away, Evren stepped inside her guard, wrapped his arm around her waist to steady her, and gently pulled the broken piece from her trembling hand.
The sharp ceramic dropped from his fingers, clattering harmlessly onto the carpet.
"Let go of me!" Zephyra rasped in blind terror, thrashing against his chest with all her meager strength. "Kill me! Just kill me! I won’t go back on the iron table! I won’t let your machines shock me again!"
Her raw voice trembled with panic.
Evren didn’t drop her, nor did he use force. He simply held her against his chest, keeping his grip firm yet gentle so she wouldn’t tear her damaged ligaments.
"Zephyra, Zephyra," Evren called calmly. "Look at me. Look around you."
Zephyra’s breath came in ragged gasps. Her head jerked up, looking in terror.
"There is no iron table," Evren said softly, holding her gaze. "There are no dungeon guards. You are in Victoria Hill. No one in this house is ever going to hurt you."
Zephyra shivered violently in his arms.
She looked from the sunny balcony to the soft carpet, and finally back at Evren. The panic in her eyes began to fade, leaving only tiredness and confusion.
She raised a trembling hand, pointing weakly toward the open doorway.
"That sound..." Zephyra choked out. "The mechanical whine... the low hum... it’s the carts they used to wheel into the dungeon cell..."
Evren’s heart tightened as the realization struck him.
The medical droid’s motor probably sounded exactly like the torture devices in the Arena #9 dungeons.
Evren looked toward the open doorway. "Dr. Hayes."
"Yes?" Dr. Hayes responded from the hall.
"Can you reduce the sound on that droid or make it completely silent?"
"Uhmm... Yes, Chairman. It has an Ultra-Silent Acoustic mode specifically engineered for trauma patients. Activating it now."
Dr. Hayes tapped his tablet screen.
A soft chime signaled the command, and the faint mechanical hum vanished instantly. The hallway became completely silent.
Evren gently loosened his hold, allowing Zephyra to plant her bare feet back onto the carpet. He kept one hand lightly on her shoulder until she found her balance against the edge of the velvet armchair.
"Take a deep breath," Evren said gently. "The noise is gone."
Zephyra swallowed hard, listening intently. The terrifying electric whine had completely disappeared.
"You good?"
She nodded.
Evren gestured toward the hallway. "Dr. Hayes, bring it in."
Dr. Hayes guided the Aegis-BioCare RX-9 into the room. With its motor silenced, the sleek white machine glided quietly on its magnetic tracks and stopped by the marble table.
Dr. Hayes tapped the tablet once more, bringing the unit’s holographic interface to life.
"Lady Zephyra, this is the Aegis-BioCare RX-9... your personal care companion. It has contactless thermal emitters calibrated specifically to soothe your radial nerve inflammation. It operates completely hands-free and won’t approach or touch you without your permission."
Dr. Hayes held his own palm three inches above the droid’s glowing pad. A soft amber-gold light glowed and a soothing scent filled the room.
Zephyra stared at the amber light, and her guard finally dropped.
Evren picked up a fresh porcelain bowl of warm herbal broth from the droid’s warming tray and set it on the table.
"The machine will stay in silent mode in the corner," Evren told her calmly. "It’s here to give you hot broth and warm compresses whenever you want them. No maids or guards will enter unless you call for them."
Evren walked over to the doors, pulled them wide open, and looked back at her.
"And the door is unlocked," Evren added softly. "You are not a prisoner here, Zephyra. You are free."
Zephyra stood by the armchair, clutching the mantle tightly around her shoulders. She looked at the unlocked doorway, then looked at Evren’s patient eyes.
For four agonizing months, every room had been a locked cage, and every person had been a tormentor.
To have someone disarm her without fighting, remove the sound that terrified her, and leave the door wide open was a shock that completely shattered her cynical view of the world.
A soft golden chime rang in Evren’s mind.
[DING!]
[HEROINE #2 — ZEPHYRA NIGHTSHADE: TRUST INCREASED!]
[CURRENT TRUST LEVEL: 5% ➔ 10%]
Zephyra’s shoulders slowly lowered. She didn’t say anything, but she gave a stiff nod before walking quietly over to the chair by the sunlit window.
—
Evren and Dr. Hayes stepped out into the grand hallway, closing the doors behind them.
"Her trauma is deep, Chairman, but she is beginning to stabilize," Dr. Hayes said quietly. "With the contactless thermal therapy managing her nerve spasms, her physical pain should reduce by forty percent over the next few days."
"Thank you, Doctor. Mikay will arrange your escort back to the Institute," Evren replied.
After seeing Dr. Hayes off, Evren walked out to the terrace overlooking the lush hills of Victoria Hill.
The morning breeze was clear.
Evren leaned against the stone balustrade and focused his mind inward, summoning the translucent golden System interface.
He expected an automated alchemical quest or recipe to appear, just as the System had provided for Amber’s Stage 1, 2, and 3 Nerve Restoration Pills.
’System,’ Evren thought. ’Scan Zephyra’s Grade-5 Necrosis and generate the Phase 1 Alchemical Synthesis Formula.’
The familiar golden screen appeared across his vision, but instead of an instant recipe or a quest, he got:
[DING!]
[SYSTEM STATUS: NO ACTIVE QUEST AVAILABLE]
[TARGET #2: ZEPHYRA NIGHTSHADE — PURIFICATION STASIS ACTIVE]
[DIAGNOSTIC NOTICE: GRADE-5 ABYSSAL NECROSIS CANNOT BE DISSOLVED BY CONVENTIONAL APOTHECARY CATALYSTS]
[REQUIRED SOVEREIGN REAGENT: 1x S-RANK ABYSSAL SHADOW-LOTUS]
[LOCATION: SECTOR 4 S-RANK SHADOW RIFT (DEPTH LEVEL: 55)]
[RIFT STATUS: CURRENTLY DORMANT / UNOPENED (ESTIMATED PLANETARY CONVERGENCE: PENDING)]
Evren stared at the floating text, letting out a breath.
’The rift isn’t even open yet,’ Evren realized.
Unlike Amber’s condition, which could be cured with sequential pills synthesized from standard high-tier reagents and harvested cores, Zephyra’s dark miasma required a living S-Rank reagent that only grew in the deepest core of a dormant S-Rank Shadow Rift.
And until that dimensional rift breached in Sector 4, there was nothing more he could do to accelerate her cure.
He had hundreds of millions in liquid cash and two hundred billion in his System Vault, yet he was forced to play the waiting game.
BUZZ. BUZZ.
His phone vibrated in his pocket. Evren pulled out the device and tapped the screen.
"Mikay," Evren answered.
"Chairman," Mikay’s voice came through the line, sounding unusually tense. "We have a major situation."
Evren’s eyes narrowed. "Did Prescott try something at Horizon Plaza?"
"No, Chairman," Mikay replied. "Young Master Prescott has been completely stripped of his authority and confined to quarters. This is far bigger."
"Speak."
"An official, gold-sealed diplomatic dispatch was just delivered to the guild," Mikay explained. "It didn’t come from the Prescott Guild management."
Mikay paused, taking a sharp breath before continuing. "It comes directly fromLord Alistair Prescott... the Patriarch of the Prescott Clan and Supreme Chairman of the Prescott Dynasty."
Evren stood upright on the terrace.
"What does the Patriarch want?"
"Lord Prescott has formally requested a private, personal audience with you, Chairman. The dispatch states that he wishes to discuss the future balance of power in Veridia Metropolis... and he is asking for the time and location of your convenience."
Evren looked out at the city’s shimmering skyline.
The arrogant young heir had been child’s play.
Now, the real challenge has arrived... the powerful head of the Prescott family was finally stepping in.
