Pampering Discarded Heroines Triggers My 10,000x Rebate System
Chapter 64: Under ArrestThe mana-suppression cuffs hummed with glowing blue light as the senior enforcer reached for Evren’s wrists.
Before the handcuffs could come within a foot of Evren, a furious roar tore through the yard.
"GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM HIM!"
The junior squad captain threw his battered body directly between Evren and the senior enforcer, forcefully shoving the enforcer’s armored hands away.
Behind the captain, the other four surviving hunters: Miller the wounded brawler, the archer, the scout, and the young healer, rushed forward, forming a tight, unbreakable human wall to shield Evren.
The senior enforcer stepped back, looking angry. "Stand down, hunters! You are obstructing an official High Council arrest!"
"Arrest who?!" the captain screamed as he clutched his broken ribs. "Our squad was sent into an unvetted slaughterhouse! The Bureau told us this was a routine C-Rank rift, but it mutated into an A-Rank death trap! Dennis was murdered in the first thirty minutes, and the rest of us were about to be executed!"
The young healer wiped tears from her soot-stained face, shouting at the surrounding enforcers at the top of her lungs. "HE is the only reason any of us are breathing! While you stood outside behind your yellow tape in comfortable vans, he jumped in, killed the A-Rank boss, and saved all five of us! How dare you try to put handcuffs on him?"
CLICK-CLICK-FLASH!
Across the police barricades, dozens of media drones and news reporters zoomed their high-definition cameras in on the standoff.
The scout raised his wrist toward the hovering news drones, projecting the digital screen of his mana radar into the air.
"Look at the official telemetry!" the scout yelled. "The ambient mana spiked to High A-Rank. The Bureau failed to detect the dimensional thinning! If Chairman Crawford hadn’t entered that rift, all six of us would be corpses right now."
The massive crowd of civilian onlookers behind the barricades erupted into furious shouts.
"Shame on the Bureau!"
"Let the hero go!"
"Arrest the incompetent inspectors, not Crawford!"
The crowd pushed forward, shaking the metal barricades. The police officers looked around in panic, struggling to hold the angry citizens back.
Cold sweat broke out on the senior enforcer’s forehead. He glanced at the flashing news cameras, his hand trembling on his holster.
He realized that if he cuffs Evren right now on live national television, a full-scale riot would break out before they could even leave the district.
The enforcer took a step back and slowly lowered the handcuffs.
"Stand down, everyone!" the enforcer announced over his loudspeaker to calm the roaring crowd. "Because of the unexpected mutation of the rift, we must follow standard Imperial security protocol. All involved parties, including Chairman Crawford, has to come to Central Headquarters for a formal debriefing and to log their statements."
Evren took a calm step forward, resting a reassuring hand on the captain’s trembling shoulder.
"Fair enough. CCome on, let’s get this over with so you can all get some rest."
—
Thirty minutes later, three armored government transport vans arrived at the gates of the Central High Council Security Headquarters.
Inside the main administrative hall, the five junior hunters were immediately escorted to the central scribe registry.
Still covered in dust and dried blood, the captain, Miller, and the scout slammed their mana radar crystals onto the counter and gave their sworn, timestamped statements to the court stenographers.
"Log every word!" the captain ordered. "This young man saved our lives, while the Bureau’s reconnaissance nearly got us all butchered."
Across the hallway, the double oak doors to the executive wing slammed open with force.
Elder Brandon Caldwell stormed into the lobby, his Council robes swishing behind him. His face was flushed red with fury as he pointed a finger at Evren.
"Arrest him!" Caldwell shouted. "I don’t care about the news cameras! Evren Crawford deliberately breached a sealed Capital rift in direct defiance of my explicit decree! Drag him to a mana-suppression cell immediately!"
A dozen heavily armed citadel guards stepped forward, raising their energy pikes.
"Enough, Caldwell."
A deep, commanding voice rolled through the hall.
The room’s temperature dropped as a suffocating wave of aura swept through the lobby, instantly freezing the guards in their tracks.
Walking slowly down the grand marble staircase was a tall, broad-shouldered man in his late fifties.
He wore the navy uniform of the Imperial Defense Division, adorned with gold epaulets and a platinum badge representing the highest authority in the realm: Grand Arbiter Raymond Kincaid.
His hair was iron-gray, and his sharp amber eyes took in the room in one glance.
Elder Caldwell froze; his face paled as he forced a tight smile. "Grand Arbiter Kincaid... this matter falls under the Jurisdiction of Section 14..."
"This matter falls under common sense," Grand Arbiter Kincaid interrupted coldly.
Kincaid looked down at Caldwell with disgust. "The Bureau sent five C and D-Rank hunters into an unmonitored A-Rank slaughterhouse due to an internal reconnaissance failure. Chairman Crawford corrected our failure, eliminated an A-Rank anomaly, and brought our citizens back alive."
Kincaid turned his gaze to the court stenographers. "Have the hunters’ statements been logged?"
"Yes, Grand Arbiter!" the chief scribe responded, bowing deeply. "The telemetry verifies full A-Rank mutation and unanimous testimony of rescue."
"Then Chairman Crawford’s debriefing is officially concluded," Kincaid stated firmly. "Dismiss the guards."
Elder Caldwell clenched his fists so hard his knuckles turned white, but under Kincaid’s authority, he couldn’t utter a single word of protest. He turned on his heel and stormed out of the hall in humiliation.
Grand Arbiter Kincaid looked at Evren with his amber eyes, a faint, approving smile touching his lips. "Walk with me, Chairman Crawford."
—
A minute later, Evren followed Grand Arbiter Kincaid into his private corner office on the top floor of the Citadel.
The room had floor-to-ceiling glass walls, offering an unobstructed panoramic view of the entire Imperial Capital skyline.
Kincaid walked over to a polished side table, poured two glasses of aged amber wine, and handed one to Evren.
"You move fast, Crawford," Kincaid said, taking a sip as he leaned against the edge of the glass wall. "You weren’t in the Capital for twenty-four hours before you turned Caldwell’s tribunal into a circus and soloed a mutated A-Rank rift."
"I don’t waste time, Grand Arbiter," Evren replied, holding his glass without drinking. "Especially when lives are on the line."
Kincaid chuckled softly, setting his glass down. He reached to his desk and tapped a black holographic console.
A glowing, three-dimensional map of the entire continent illuminated the center of the office.
Across the holographic map, dozens of bright red fracture lines were pulsing, spreading like spiderwebs from the eastern borders straight toward the Imperial Capital.
"Four S-Rank rifts in sixty days in Veridia," Kincaid’s voice turned gravely. "Now a routine C-Rank in District Seven mutates into an A-Rank within minutes. The old guilds and politicians think this is just a temporary surge. They think they can use it to monopolize contracts and settle petty turf wars."
Kincaid looked directly into Evren’s eyes.
"They’re blind. The dimensional fabric of this world is tearing apart. We are facing a nationwide catastrophe, and men like Caldwell are still counting their bribe money."
Kincaid straightened his uniform.
"You proved your strength in Sector Four, and you proved it again today. As long as I hold a seat on the High Council, Caldwell and the Capital guilds will not touch Apex’s charter. You have my full backing in the Capital."
Evren nodded slightly. "I appreciate the clarity, Grand Arbiter."
Kincaid turned back to the panoramic window, watching the dark storm clouds gathering over the distant mountains.
"Don’t thank me yet," Kincaid murmured. "You have political immunity for now... but you need to be prepared."
Evren looked at the seasoned commander’s stern profile. "Prepared for what?"
Grand Arbiter Kincaid stared out into the dark horizon. "That’s the terrifying part, Crawford... I have no idea. But whatever is breaking through those dimensional walls, it’s bigger than anything this world has ever seen.’
