The heat from the creature’s flaming sword filled the vault like an open blast furnace.

The five junior hunters covered their faces, crying in terror as the blinding red light in the beast’s chest prepared to incinerate the entire room.

Evren planted both boots into the cracked stone and tightened his grip on the Frost-Bane Cleaver with both hands as he poured raw mana from his core into the weapon.

The moment his energy touched the blade’s glacial core, it turned into frost mana. Three feet of blue ice instantly coated the sword, and the temperature around him dropped drastically.

BOOM!

Evren leaped twenty feet into the air, his dark trench coat billowing behind him as he soared high above the flaming monster.

He looked down at the blazing giant. "Let’s see if your core can survive absolute zero."

Using the full weight of his enhanced strength and the cleaver’s freezing aura, Evren slammed the blade down in a powerful strike.

SKKKRRRRAAAASH!

The collision between the two blades sounded like thunder ripping through a mountain peak.

The Frost-Bane Cleaver’s freezing mana crashed into the giant’s dark fire. The extreme cold shattered the giant’s blazing sword, scattering thousands of molten iron shards everywhere.

The icy cleaver didn’t slow down for even a fraction of a second.

The radiant blue blade sliced straight down through the monster’s horned helmet, splitting its iron skull with a deafening crack.

The giant let out a choked roar of agony. In a frantic death reflex, its left claw lashed out, trying to grab Evren by the throat.

Evren twisted his body mid-air.

With a burst of S-Rank speed, Evren plant-kicked the creature’s shoulder, snapping the arm joint backward with a loud snap. He then drove the Frost-Bane Cleaver deep into the beast’s armored chest, striking the pulsing core.

BOOOOOM!

A blinding explosion of frost and white light erupted from the wound.

Absolute-zero mana flooded through the monster’s veins, instantly freezing its fifteen-foot body into a solid block of ice.

Evren landed lightly on both boots, pulling his weapon free as he exhaled a faint cloud of white breath into the chilled air.

A split second later, countless hairline fractures spider-webbed across the frozen giant. With a loud crack, the monster shattered into millions of glittering ice crystals and dissolved into black smoke.

A single, fist-sized purple crystal tumbled across the stone floor, coming to a gentle stop right near Evren’s boots.

It glowed with pure, rhythmic pulses of violet light: The Shadow-Mist Core.

Evren bent down, picked up the warm crystal, and held it up in the palm of his hand.

A system chime echoed in his vision:

[DING!]

[OBTAINED: SHADOW-MIST CORE (1/3 REQUIRED CATALYSTS FOR ZEPHYRA’S STAGE 2 PURIFICATION ELIXIR)!]

Evren turned toward the five stunned hunters who were still kneeling against the far wall. "Any objections to me taking the monster core?" he asked in a calm, casual voice.

The captain and the wounded brawler shook their heads frantically, their eyes wide with disbelief and awe.

"Objections?!" the captain stammered, waving his trembling hands. "Boss, you just killed an A-Rank mutated boss and saved all of our lives! If you hadn’t stepped in, we’d all be ash right now! The core is completely yours."

"Take everything, please!" the young healer choked out through tears of relief. "We’re just grateful to be alive!"

Evren gave a small nod and slipped the Shadow-Mist Core safely into his Spatial Storage Ring.

He then walked over to the pool of blood near the sunken pedestal where Dennis had fallen. He bent down and picked up the silver hunter dog tags from Dennis’s torn breastplate, wiping the blood clean with his sleeve.

He walked over to the captain and placed the silver tags into the captain’s trembling hand.

"Take him home to his family," Evren said quietly.

The captain clutched the silver dog tags tightly against his chest, tears streaming down his soot-stained face. "Thank you, Boss... thank you. We’ll make sure he gets an honorable burial."

RUMBLE...

With the mutated boss dead, the dimensional distortion holding the room shut collapsed completely.

At the front of the chamber, the two colossal stone slabs groaned and slowly slid open, revealing the swirling blue exit vortex leading back to the outside world.

"The doors..." the archer whispered, wiping cold sweat from his forehead. "The exit opened!"

Evren sheathed the Frost-Bane Cleaver back into his storage ring. He checked on the wounded brawler whose chest had been stabilized by the healer’s mana.

"Can he walk?" Evren asked.

"I can manage, Boss," the brawler grunted, leaning heavily on the captain and the archer. "Thanks to you."

"Good," Evren said calmly. "Let’s get out of here."

Together, the six of them walked through the colossal archway and stepped into the swirling blue vortex.

The cold subterranean air vanished instantly, replaced by the warm mid-morning sun and the smell of industrial exhaust. They stepped out of the spatial portal, landing on the gravel in the open storage yard of District Seven.

Before the hunters could even take a full breath of fresh air, a sharp chorus of weapons clicking echoed across the entire yard.

Over thirty heavily armed High Council Enforcers in dark mana-resistant tactical armor and glowing pulse rifles had the exit portal completely surrounded.

Four armored government transport vans were parked in a tight perimeter, their red and blue emergency lights flashing silently against the brick warehouses. Behind the police barricades in the distance, crowds of onlookers and news reporters were shouting over the noise of hovering media drones.

A senior High Council Enforcer in silver-crested plate armor stepped forward through the line of drawn weapons. In his hands, he held a pair of glowing blue mana-suppression handcuffs.

He pointed his weapon directly at Evren’s chest with a cold look in his eyes. "Chairman Evren Crawford of Apex Sovereign Conglomerate... you violated a direct Council decree and illegally breached an active Capital rift."

The enforcer took a step forward, raising the glowing cuffs. "You are under arrest!"
