But the memories he had carried offered another picture:

’Ambitious; brutally so.’

A man who would shake your hand, remember your name, congratulate you sincerely, then spend six months making sure the next role went to him instead if you happened to stand between him and another peak.

Park respected that; deeply, actually.

Ambition that sharp deserved acknowledgement, especially when it came from somebody talented enough to justify at least some of the arrogance behind it. One half-starved animal recognising another across a distance Park was nowhere near strong enough to close yet.

He watched Alex Reed disappear into a living cocoon of hands, phones, security, and people shouting his name.

’Look at him.’

The actor’s smile never broke.

Not once.

’Four films past the moon and he still has to stand there pretending strangers grabbing at his sleeves is the highlight of his afternoon.’

Park’s eyes narrowed slightly, amused, at the smile Alex Reed was giving and all the grabbing he didn’t seem to mind.

’Subscription fee for worship, I guess.’ He wasn’t sure himself was capable of Alex’s composure if given the same treatment. He had deep respect for the man if nothing else.

Then another thought arrived.

’I wonder if that smile ever reaches as far back as his eyes.’

Mick had somehow reached the outer edge of the crowd and was now waving something that suspiciously resembled an autograph card.

’Traitor.’

Park left him there.

He walked toward the revolving glass entrance alone, passed one massive screen carrying NX Arc’s logo, and stopped directly in front of the doors.

For one second, he closed his eyes.

He needed the moment.

So he took it.

Because these were not ordinary doors.

NX Arc Entertainment.

(IMAGE FOR NX ARC)

A third-ranked entertainment agency in the entire Celestial Empire.

Park had spent two lives dreaming about entering places like this and here he was and he was sure talent alone did not get someone signed here by itself.

Talent was the entry fee.

Luck might earn a callback.

Actually getting inside, being selected, receiving agency resources before a final contract had even been signed, being sent to the Foundry, being placed on a production, being called back for another assessment after years of Alexander Bennett quietly making sure acting doors remained shut?

That required something else.

Power.

’Real power; enough and capable of finding a Prime Minister’s standing instruction somewhere inside the entertainment industry and casually deciding it no longer applied.’

The past Park had never suspected it but this one suspected it from the memory NX Arc first came looking for him.

Standing beneath the shadow of the building made that suspicion feel considerably less theoretical.

’Someone had opened this road.’

Someone with enough weight that Alexander Bennett’s hand had either been pushed aside or simply ignored.

And Park still did not know who and the uncertainty sat in his chest with two faces, one promising and one threatening, and he had absolutely no idea which one would eventually come asking for repayment.

A small smile touched his mouth.

’Somebody out there decided I was worth the risk.’ He opened his eyes. ’I really hope they understood what they were buying.’

His smile deepened.

’Because gratitude has an expiration date.’ Park pushed through the glass doors.

The lobby swallowed the screaming outside almost instantly; the quiet inside NX Arc was impressive enough to feel engineered.

Vast polished floors stretched beneath a ceiling several storeys high, broken by suspended lights, dark wood, glass, and soft architectural curves designed to make the space feel expensive without screaming about it. The air smelled faintly of polished wood beneath something floral that was trying very hard to convince everyone it had been imported from somewhere with private beaches.

A broad reception counter occupied most of the far wall.

Two women in sleek black sat behind it.

Both looked up when Park entered, their eyes paused but only briefly and professional experience dragged them back to their screens.

Park almost respected the recovery.

Almost.

They had probably watched a thousand beautiful boys walk through these doors carrying dreams in both hands, convinced they were one audition away from becoming immortal.

Statistically, most of them had probably walked back out holding significantly less.

’Safe zone,’ Park decided as he glanced around. ’No hostile mobs. Two quest-givers behind the counter. Both pretending I’m furniture. Standard.’

He found a low couch in an empty corner of the enormous lobby and dropped into it, stretching his legs comfortably in front of him like a boy who had only recently discovered he was allowed to take up space inside rooms like this.

Forty-five minutes.

He was early, very early.

Partly because patience had never appeared anywhere on his list of virtues, and also because standing outside in that screaming crowd sounded like a custom-built punishment for somebody who still remembered how humiliation tasted when swallowed repeatedly.

’Fortunately, humanity had invented phones specifically to destroy unwanted time.’

Park unlocked his, the avalanche of notifications from earlier had finally exhausted itself somewhere during the drive, and two messages sat close to the top.

The first came from Gremlin: You better destroy that audition or I’m coming down there myself. Record me a video of you singing. And another one of their faces when they realise who the heavens just dropped on them. Don’t mess this up. I’m rooting for you. Hard.

Park read it again; it was long but soft, a bit threatening but most of all, supportive.

She managed to somehow to comfort and bully him inside the same paragraph.

Basically Emmeline condensed into text.

A helpless little smile slipped onto his mouth.

’She’d actually do it.’

He could already picture her storming into NX Arc, demanding to know why they had not immediately rewritten the industry around her brother’s existence, then asking where the snacks were because revolutionary action apparently burned calories.

’Absolute menace.’ His favorite kind.

The second message came from Musketeer 1:Don’t come home late. Father and mother might return today. And don’t cause trouble for me to clean up 🙄

Park stared at the screen and laughed quietly.

’Look at you.’

Aveline Bennett, eldest daughter of one of the most powerful families in the Empire, undefeated champion of pretending she did not care while caring enough to message him before an audition.

’Was that you wishing me luck, big sis?’ His grin widened. ’Beautifully done. Very subtle. The eye-roll emoji really carried the tenderness. I can almost feel the hug through the screen.’

He typed two replies to Aveline: Thank you. and the one for Emmeline: I will remember to.

That one was deliberately vague enough to become somebody else’s problem later.

Park locked the phone and placed it beside him before leaning back into the couch, both arms resting comfortably along the top.

Forty minutes.

Forty minutes until a group of professionals sat in a room expecting a pretty nineteen-year-old rookie with a good voice and some promising acting talent.

Park closed his eyes.

’Then I ruin somebody’s understanding of what nineteen-year-olds are supposed to be capable of.’

Something lightly tapped his shoulder.

Park opened his eyes and turned.

For half a second, he genuinely thought someone had placed a flower beside him:

’Oh, a beautiful flower.’
