Park turned and looked at the beauty who had just tapped his shoulder.
For half a second, the word flower still felt annoyingly accurate.
He smiled at her, easy and friendly, giving absolutely nothing away about the much less innocent appreciation currently sprinting laps through his head. She really was beautiful. Soft-looking in a way that somehow survived RoraWood, where pretty faces were practically part of the building code, and familiar enough that recognition was already tugging somewhere in his memories.
Whatever courage had brought her over seemed to wobble the moment Park gave her his full attention.
"You’re... you’re Park, right?"
The first you’re came out too quickly, the second catching behind it as she visibly fought with herself.
Park nodded.
"Yes."
"I’m..."
"MJ."
She stopped.
Park smiled wider. "I’d be a fool if I forgot someone as beautiful as you."
Her eyes widened.
Park paused too, as though the sentence had escaped before his manners managed to tackle it.
"Sorry." He scratched lightly at the side of his head, putting just enough awkwardness into the apology to sand the edges off the compliment. "That came out way more blunt than it sounded in my head."
MJ was already smiling and the nervousness that had followed her over to him lost another large chunk of itself.
"But yeah, MJ. I remember you. We did the acting audition together, and then somehow ended up getting the same gig afterward. Of course I remember."
"Yes." She laughed softly. "That’s me."
Now that he thought about it, this was actually their third proper encounter now; the audition had been the first, their little gig together had followed, and then there had been the Foundry yesterday, where four survivors from the original seven had somehow found themselves suffering under the same roof again. Park had noticed her then, but Jim had been too busy trying to turn his lungs into decorative objects for anybody to have much of a conversation.
’Math, this is the fourth, not third.’
MJ tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "I honestly didn’t think you’d remember me."
Park lifted a brow. "Why?"
"I don’t know." She gave him an embarrassed little shrug. "With your talent and... you know."
"I know?"
She looked at his face, immediately regretted making the mistake of looking directly at his face, then laughed at herself.
"You’re quite the handsome fellow."
Park pressed his lips together to stop the grin from becoming unbearable.
"Quite?"
"Don’t start."
"I said nothing."
"Everyone’s been talking about you," she continued. "Especially after the audition and that gig. I guess I expected you to be a little more..." She searched for the polite version.
"Arrogant?"
MJ winced. "I wasn’t going to say it like that."
"But you were going to mean it like that."
She laughed again. "Maybe."
Park scratched his head. "Unfortunately, I was raised rather humbly."
That sentence was technically true if one ignored the enormous Bennett estate, the Prime Minister father, the Chancellor stepmother, the private security detail, the Imperial Park Royale Towers access, and practically every other detail of his current existence.
’Tiny technicalities.’
"So, MJ." Park leaned back slightly against the couch. "How can I help you?"
The nervousness came back after he asked, not all of it, but enough for Park to notice immediately. Her fingers shifted against one another, and her eyes briefly moved away before returning to him.
Before she could answer, Park glanced around the lobby.
"Actually, I’m surprised you’re here today. Is there another acting audition or something?"
MJ opened her mouth, Park’s expression suddenly changed:
"Oh, wait."
He sat forward.
"Did you get through? And have you officially signed with NX?"
That startled a laugh out of her. "No, no. To both questions."
Park blinked.
"But yes I did go through..." Her smile returned, brighter this time. "They told me to come in today and finalize everything. Contract, paperwork, all of it. So if nothing goes horribly wrong in the next hour, I’ll officially be part of the agency."
"Oh."
Park genuinely brightened.
"Damn, congratulations."
"Thank you."
"You came through alone?"
MJ shook her head. "Two others got called in too. The rest of the original seven were dropped."
Park’s smile faded slightly; so that was it.
Seven had entered that first intake.
Four remained.
MJ and two others had officially made it through.
"And you," she added quickly. "Obviously."
Park laughed. "Obviously?"
"There’s no way they’re dropping you."
"Careful. You’ll make me confident."
"I think that ship sailed before we met."
"Cruelly right."
MJ smiled.
Park shrugged. "But I’ll see what my fate is after the audition. Hopefully you’re right."
"Oh, speaking of the audition..." MJ’s expression shifted again. "That’s actually kind of why I wanted to talk to you."
Park nodded knowingly.
"Oh, of course."
She looked confused.
"Thank you for coming over personally to wish me success. Very thoughtful. I accept." Park said, " That’s why you’re here talking to me, right?"
MJ stared at him for a second before another laugh escaped: "Yes, actually. Good luck."
Park placed a hand over his heart. "See? I knew it."
"But that’s the second reason why I came."
Something in her voice changed enough to make him stop playing around.
MJ glanced around the lobby.
It was no longer quite as empty as when Park had arrived. More people had filtered inside, though quite a few were still lingering close to the enormous front windows, watching the continuing Alex Reed circus outside. Unfortunately for them, the Box-Office Prince was no longer the only interesting thing available.
Heads had begun turning toward Park too.
Some subtly.
Some with the subtlety of a car crash.
The people waiting for one famous man outside had apparently discovered another face worth staring at indoors, and Park’s natural ability to become the centre of a room was doing absolutely nothing to help MJ’s nerves.
She lowered her voice.
"Can I... can I actually talk to you somewhere?"
Park studied her for a moment, then stood and picked up his notebook.
"Sure."
MJ looked relieved.
Park slipped his phone into his pocket and gestured for her to go ahead.
"Lead the way, MJ."
She turned and started across the lobby, Park falling easily into step beside her.
They had barely made it several metres when a familiar sound rang cleanly through his skull.
