Pioneer Lord: I Have Conquering System
Chapter 256 - 210: Twin Holy Trees (Part 2)The Elf Race has always been noble and proud, but in this day and age, if they didn’t learn to adapt to the times, they would have vanished from this world long ago.
Since the Twin Holy Trees withered, the Elf Race has fallen into decline and endured immense suffering. The greatest of these pains was the loss of the trees themselves. To their ancestors, it meant they must have committed some grave error for the mother tree to abandon them.
They have lived in shame and self-reproach ever since. The appearance of the Laurel Tree now was tantamount to their race being recognized once more.
If the Lord knew what these Elves were thinking, he’d surely scoff.
Leaving it to a tree to judge the right and wrong of one’s actions was, in itself, the greatest mistake of all.
"You can’t handle this Magical Beast, but you don’t want to publicize this secret, so you came to find me?"
A bolt of lightning seemed to flash through the Lord’s mind, piercing the fog and allowing him to instantly grasp the situation.
"Aren’t you afraid I’ll be tempted?" Levi looked at Ash, trying to read something from the Elf Queen’s expression. "This is the legendary Holy Tree, the ultimate treasure of the Elf Race. Not to mention, if I were to take this to other Elves, I could absolutely exchange it for unimaginable wealth."
’Levi was no saint who would turn his nose up at gold lying on the ground, let alone a treasure far more precious. It would be an outright lie to say he wasn’t tempted.’
"Levi, although we have not known each other long, I trust my intuition." Ash’s gaze was fervent, her eyes as brilliant as stars fixed on the Lord’s handsome face. "You are not a petty man driven by insatiable greed. While you may sometimes lack a nobleman’s bearing, I see a quality in you that others do not possess. It’s something I’ve never seen before. It’s difficult to articulate what it is, but it has a sense of greatness to it."
HISS!
Levi instantly felt a chill run down his spine. He felt as if he’d been stripped bare and scrutinized by this Elf Queen, down to the last hair.
’Thanks to the world of my past life, I’d always lived by a certain principle: when you’re struggling, just focus on improving yourself; when you’ve made it, help make the world a better place.’
’In both his lives, he’d had humble origins. If one day he truly became a King, with a grand army at his back and no one who dared to cross him, then no matter his motivation, he would strive to create a world where everyone had the chance to become a dragon.’
’If nothing else, he would at least give everyone a chance to transcend their class.’
’A world where slaves weren’t forever bound to be slaves, and farmers weren’t destined to simply till the soil for all generations.’
’In this world of nobles and slaves, how could that not be considered a great accomplishment?’
"Ash, you’re the first person to make me feel I have no secrets," Levi said, a flicker of conflict on his face that finally settled into a wry, helpless smile.
The stunningly beautiful Elf Queen broke into a radiant smile. "Levi, it’s just one of my abilities as a Divine Favored One."
"Besides, you’re the most powerful person I’ve met. If even you can’t handle this Magical Beast, then no one else can either."
"At that point, the only way to defeat it would be to gather an army, which means the secret of the Elf Race would be revealed to all."
"Yes, Lord Levi, if you succeed in helping us reclaim the Sacred Laurel Tree, the Elf Race will remember your kindness for generations," an Elf Elder said, staring at the Lord. His tone was like that of an ugly Succubus, trying to tempt a mortal soul.
Levi subtly took two steps back. He admitted to himself that his strength was beyond the ordinary, and he was quite proud of it.
But he would never rush into a fight with an opponent whose strength was a complete unknown.
’What was that saying again? "Know the enemy and know yourself, and you can fight a hundred battles without defeat."’
’Every time he’d made a move in the past, unless he was forced into it, it was because he had a clear grasp of the difference in strength between himself and his opponent.’
’This Magical Beast, entrenched in the Magic Crystal Mine and obviously guarding the Laurel Tree, had its buffs maxed out. It was hard to say what kind of terrifying abilities it might have.’
’To just charge in blindly... if things went south unexpectedly, the loss would far outweigh any potential gain.’
’If there were a few Magic Masters here who knew High Level Magic, he might have gritted his teeth and gone for it. But in reality, all he had were a few cannon fodder and Ash, a squishy Mage.’
"We’ll see, we’ll see... I need to think about it."
He had unconsciously backed up right to the mouth of the tunnel they’d come down.
"Don’t worry, Levi. We’re not asking you to face this Magical Beast alone. We’ll select our most elite Elf Warriors, and I’ll be there as well to help you."
Ash saw the Lion Hunter Knight’s hesitation and spoke, a touch of exasperation in her voice.
"There’s no point in discussing this now. I suggest we head back. We’ve been gone for too long; other people will start to get suspicious."
’I really need to think this through,’ Levi thought. ’After all, that Magical Beast looked overwhelmingly powerful, not like some random mook I could just take down easily.’
"Alright," the other Elf Elders agreed, clearly disappointed.
The group headed back the way they came. The Lord was slightly disappointed that he didn’t get to hold her hand this time.
"Levi, you must help us keep this a secret for the time being."
Ash reminded him again after they emerged.
They weren’t planning to keep it a secret forever. After all, no secret lasts forever. They could only try to buy as much time as possible.
Levi nodded, his expression as calm as a still lake, but a storm raged within his heart.
’This trip was originally just supposed to be a chance to get some Magic Crystal Ore to hatch the Stone Egg, and maybe farm some experience to level up the High Cliff Castle Warriors.’
’But I never expected this kind of encounter.’
’But Ash had hidden this from Fulina, deliberately waiting until she was gone to tell me. It seemed the Elves weren’t hopelessly naive after all.’
’After all, if Fulina ever found out about the Laurel Tree, their seemingly solid alliance would crumble in the blink of an eye.’
’Then again, in this world, who was really that much dumber than anyone else?’
’The ones who weren’t smart had grass growing three feet high on their graves. How could they have survived this long?’
"Well, good day, esteemed, noble Lord Levi. Is everything to your liking?"
As soon as he returned to the encampment, he ran into Heather, the Zor Priest. She was clearly still holding a grudge about last night, and her opening words were dripping with sarcasm.
"Where’s Sam?" Levi couldn’t be bothered to trade barbs with this little wench and asked directly.
"He’s having a wonderful time with my sisters," Heather said with a mysterious smile.
Levi’s eyebrow twitched. He strode menacingly toward one of the courtyards in the camp.
To his surprise, several of High Cliff Castle’s leaders were already in the courtyard, gathered around to watch some kind of spectacle.
"Brother-in-law, meeting’s over?" Mier asked, looking as guilty as a thief caught in the act.
"Yeah, just some minor stuff," Levi replied distractedly. He then heard a commotion coming from the treehouse—a jumble of painful-sounding screams, yet with an unmistakable hint of excitement mixed in.
"What’s going on in there?" Levi asked.
The voice from inside was familiar; it sounded like Sam the Wilderness Shaman.
"Ahem... Brother-in-law, you should probably go see for yourself," Mier said, his gaze shifting evasively.
Watching Levi walk toward the door, Mier breathed a sigh of relief and quickly motioned to Zat beside him. "Let’s get out of here. Sam is so screwed now."
The two of them scrambled out of the courtyard and peeked over the wall, ready to watch the show.
CLICK!
Sam, who was in the middle of having fun with three Zor Elves, looked up at the tall figure that had suddenly appeared before him, and his tongue immediately tied itself in knots.
"Y-You... how are you back...?"
"I told you to come here and learn other kinds of Magic. So this is how you ’learn,’ is it?"
Levi’s face darkened as he stared at Sam, who was tied to a chair, shirtless, his torso covered in whip marks.
The other three Zor Elves scrambled to hide the leather whips they were holding behind their backs.
"Damn it! You’ve completely shamed me!"
Levi’s opening move was a vicious kick, landing squarely on the bastard’s chest.
"AARGH!" Old man Sam screamed as he collapsed to the ground, writhing.
"Lord! This has nothing to do with us! This human said he was the leader of your Casting Team and that we had to obey him if we wanted to live in High Cliff Castle."
The Zor Elves trembled in fear, instantly throwing Sam under the bus.
They were all too aware of this human’s ruthlessness. He had killed all their sisters with just a few Javelins. It was hard not to be terrified of him.
